Made the move and lost my trans cooler :(. 2018 MGM Off-Road (bought pre-owned) to a 2021 MGM Sport (new), less chrome and similar packages. Wanted a new one off the lot before the gen 3 arrives, still in transit so no pics yet. Been thinking on this for awhile and probably should've asked everyone ahead of time. Went to the dealership very prepared to leave and keep my truck, but with a few hours of negotiating I basically stole it. No markups from msrp, trashed all the dealer add-ons + additional warranty, and they gave me above trade value for my truck. Per the dealer, they needed to sell these to make room for the upcoming '22s, but they still have no idea when they are arriving. I asked him, shouldn't '22 be on the lot by now, he laughed and said yep, normally! Anyways, few questions for all the tundra fans out there.

    1. Subjective question, but did I make the right move?

    2. I really like my 2018 OEM 18" rims w/ more meat, the 2021 has the 20" rims w/ a different, more flat design/finish. The dealer is going to let me swap them before I take home the new truck. Plan is to buy new A/T tires and possibly shocks anyways. Thoughts?

    3. Yes, I plan on adding a transmission cooler from Nick @chasenicholas93

Stock 18" wheels on my 2018. It's sitting at the house until the 21 comes in.

I have a 21 with the 20'' wheels and I personally like the larger wheels. The design is not all that great and would of preferred the 18'' trd offroad wheel design in the 20" if that makes sense. In my opinion the 20'' TRD Sport Wheels look good with a meatier tire.

You didn't mention total amount of payments you already made or mileage. Did they take your trade already? Any written contract on your purchase?

I think you absolutely made the right move if it wasn’t much more $$. I love the OR wheels way more than the 20” sport wheels I would do the same and maybe even plasti dip them black

FYI, my stock grey TRD OR rims will be up for sale soon. Grey might look good on MGM.20211020_075922.jpg

Love my TRD Sport. I don't go off road. The front and rear anti- roll bars and Bilstein shocks provide for surprisingly good handling. I was not a fan of the 20's and switched to the 18 inch TRD forged BBS wheels. Improved looks and ride quality.

IMO you did a good swap. I have a 2019 Sport and did switch to 18" wheels with 275/75 r18 Ridge Grapplers. I also leveled the truck with Falcon Sport tow/haul shocks. Very pleased with the ride and look. I also added a cooler just for kicks. If the Gen 3 crowd keeps talking smack about more hp and torque I may have to drop a Magnuson on so we can compare apples to apples. :)

You all are certainly putting my mind at ease and making me feel good about this decision, so thank you and glad I shared.

Makes complete sense. I have actually seen a few that looked impressive with some BFG's. Still favoring the 18" rims, as you said, simply for the design.

Sorry, you're right those details matter. I meant to elaborate, but I made this post the morning of our baby shower and all I hear in the background from the wife, "are you on your TITS website?" Last winter I kept taking pictures of my tundra in the snow, so that's how she decided to associate tundras.com, HA! I had a lot going on that day, but I got a response from the dealer that morning allowing me to do the rim swap, got too excited to wait and needed those outside opinions ... btw, first little one on the way, pretty excited.

    2018:
    1/18/21 - Purchase Price $41,232 w/ money down: Amount Financed $37,616
    10/18/21 - Sold $42,000
    Made approx. 9 payments @ $550 / mo.
    Miles: 31k now

    2021:
    MSRP: $48,711
    10/18/21 - Amount Financed: 41,645
    Payment: 610 / mo.

About a $6900 difference from a 2018 OR w/ 21k miles on it, to a 2021 Sport w/ 0 miles. Also contract is complete, paperwork is signed, bank information has actually already changed. Just waiting for it to arrive and take delivery.

$6900 difference. Good idea but on the fence about Plasti dipping the wheels. Hard to scrub rims hard when they're Plasti dipped.

Sweet. love hearing that each time. Are you referring to the truck itself or wheels? I thought of going down the path of Bilstein, but is there an advantage or better value with the falcons? Going to look them up shortly. Not worried about the Gen 3 crowd, they're welcome to their gadgets and dash tv screens, I'll keep what's important to me - reliable A to B, truck to do truck stuff, safe for my family and fits within my budget. Test drove them all, nothing like it.

btw, love your setup. Considered going to aftermarket wheels myself, but I am overwhelmed with the options and there is no real clear direction on lifts, offsets, tire sizes, brands/designs, etc. If I'm not care this site will allow me to really get carried away.

This site has made me want to do a little lift and tires on mine. However, the shark fin gets the odd rub with the underground parking I use when work calls.

I was honestly pleased with the OEM wheels in black powder coat. Bought the truck in February of this year with the Xtreme package. Picture added below so you can see how they look on MGM.

Tires and rim combo looks great on the MGM, especially an OEM option. Might be something to consider and ordering the TRD caps off Amazon. Was it pretty reasonably priced for the powder coating?

What is the Xtreme package? Tried google and couldn't come up with much, 18" oem rims instead of the sport 20"s

    I did something similar OP.

Had an '18 TRD O/R DB I bought new in 2018, around 27k miles on it, and this past summer I traded it for a '21 TRD O/R CrewMax. My reasoning was I figured I might want a CrewMax in the future, and I had a feeling I wasn't going to be happy with the next generation of Tundra. And what I've seen since of the new Tundra, I'm happy with the decision.

I kept my old tires off the '18. They were essentially brand new and I liked them more than the stock Michelins, so I had them trade tires. Good for them too, because they got a like new '18 that has literally brand new tires now.

One thing I have to admit though, I swear my '18 had more pep than the '21 does. But my driving style in the Tundra is pretty tame, so it's not a big deal.

I’d keep the 20” new wheels…saves you from needing new tires upfront. If your ‘18 has 21k miles, you’re swapping tires that have 21k miles of use on them. You can always buy a set of 18” factory wheels as take offs…they aren’t that rare/expensive, or just go aftermarket. Both the 18” & 20” have a +60 offset, so not improving anything between the two, and both have less than desirable off-road/at tires as OEM provided.

If they make you a deal on the forged BBS wheels (TRD Pro), or if they let you swap your wheels and help you source better tires at dealer cost…then it’d be worth entertaining

I say keep the 20’s, get you some 275/60/20 all terrain tires and roll on. The sidewall difference from the 275/65/18’s to the 275/60/20’s is negligible. Plus You’ll have 1” taller tires on the 20’s. Since you can’t get a 33” tire that’s not LT rated in the 18’s , unless you really want to ruin your economy and power by running 35” + tires it’s not necessary.

Adding up the responses the verdict looks to be 18" - (x7) over 20" - (x3). Believe I decided on the unpopular opinion to keep the stock oem 20", not looking to spend a great deal on aftermarkets yet. Did a lot of poking around the forum for different ideas, check out some of these options from others, thank you for posting w/ pics!

Down the road I will look to lift it with new shocks, may add 1-1.25" spacers right away.

Size: 275/65/R20. Considering BFG (had good luck on previous trucks), Nitto Ridge Grappler and Wildpeaks AT3W. Heard good reviews on all 3. I live in Ohio so I need a good all season tire.

I only lightly skimmed the posts, but something worth noting. The 20-21's with Push to Start use a different TPMS sensor compared to the 18-19's so keep that in mind if you're wanting a direct swap

Sad news, truck delayed. Got a phone call today from the store manager at the dealer, the truck has shifted into a 60-Day FI status? I'm told it's a quality confirmation hold with no ETA available within those 60-days. Hope there isn't an issue with the build or a problem with the truck, I was told there was not. He did say it was built on October 1st but shifted to this status today, delivery was scheduled from Oct 25 - Nov. 1. Said he's had a few other vehicles do this (camry, corolla) but it didn't take all 60 days for them to receive it. Gave me some options to keep driving my current truck that is technically theirs until it arrives or undo the deal.

Despite the delay, I believe I'm going to stay with the deal. Was looking forward to a new truck within the next few days, but I can wait. Thoughts and has anyone else experienced something like this?

might consider canceling and just using the $6900 difference to upgrade your tires/suspension/wheels & chrome deletion…I’d think you could get everything completed for that amount and still have a like new ‘18 w/31k miles done how you want.

How did they change over your loan when they don’t even know if they will have a vehicle to sell you
