    TLDR; 12/9/21

    New frame in January 2019
Eibach pro-truck shocks with Stock springs in the rear, and OME 2885s up front
285/75/16 Dick Cepek Trail Country EXP tires in Custom painted American racing steel wheels
Brute Force Fab front Bumper w/Baja Designs lighting
    Lund Cab Visor
    CVJ reman front CV axles
OEM upper and lower ball joints
    Diff breather mod
4.56 Tacoma differentials front and rear
K&N cold air intake with AFE ProGuard filter
JBA Long Tube Headers pending install

So here's the story. I bought this Tundra for $1100. It runs and drives! it has a few issues, has a bunch of rust, but I got it so dirt-cheap that I couldn't pass it up. I think I technically bought it from the original owner, although it was thought some shady street corner dealership run by some guy. kinda weird. It was listed for $2450, but I negotiated down to $1100 after two weeks of it not selling.

I brought it to the dealership for the frame recall inspection and Toyota decided to put a new frame in. The dealer said the frame was make-to-order so it'll be up to a few months for it to get here. in the meantime the truck is hanging out at the dealership.

    226k miles
2" rear lift, Rough country shocks
2" front lift, blocks and OEM bilsteins (these will get swapped out at some point)
Grille guard with off road lights. (they work, but the wiring shorts out)
Cab visor with lights. Lights non-functional.

    Agenda items:
    • NEW FRAME! (in "a few months") Pending completion 1/18/2019
    • Replace upper ball joints if the dealership doesn't.
    • NEW TIRES. fronts are shot from bad ball joints.
    • Airbag clock spring
    • Front CV axles (the boots are torn and flinging grease) DONE W/Frame Replacement
    • Fabricate a side exit exhaust.
    • new front doors (they're rotten)
    • New front fenders (to eliminate rust)
    • New bed? or fender panels?
    • New Front shocks, adding another inch of lift to match the rear.
    • can't think of anything else right now.

and now, pics of the beast!

because I heard that Toyota gets goofy if the truck has other issues. I think they can deny it if the truck isn't in good mechanical condition. Could be wrong though.

I agree with @Ace402, get that new frame asap before putting anymore money into it.

Personally I would get frame first because what IF they don’t want to put a new frame for what ever reason and you fix up all these other things?

I just don’t see why Toyota would inspect the truck for anything else except the Frame if that’s what the recal is.

The Tunny will get a complete tear down so on the plus side you may get insight on what else needs fixin. Maybe something the dealer can do at a discount.

that's true, but I can do pretty much anything that needs to be done on it aside from pulling the motor/tranny, and probably for cheaper than they can.

Well at least with a new frame you will have a new platform to play with getting that Tunny squared away!

exactly. I agree, but my only concern is that I've head of some people getting their trucks messed up and the dealership giving them a massive bill because of some issues that the truck had going in for the replacement. I'm just trying to avoid that.

My thoughts too. Better to have stealership do all the stuff during and after frame recall?

With your knowledge, you can slap the stealership down if they try getting stupid on you. Tell’em fix the frame first!

Suggest you register on toyota.com/owners to see if your truck still qualifies for the recall.
Last I heard it is 12 years from in service date (date of first use), your truck is 18 years old now.

I checked the VIN on Toyota.com and it says I'm still eligible for the recall.

THANK YOU!!!! this is what I have been looking for. I definitely have holes in the green areas, and I'll have to double-check the red areas.

You are golden. Its the term ‘perforations’ that are larger than ‘a marble’. Get her in there for a new frame and then all extras can be done during the put back. Work it!

Well, I just found out the the previous owner put some sort of random steel on either side of the right rear shock mount because it rusted though, so given that, I should be just fine. NEW FRAME HERE I COME!

I agree with this. If something is worn out they cannot put it back together with the new frame because then they are liable for it. They need to replace with new and you end up paying Toyota price for stuff that you could do for much cheaper

Could you repost that info over on “What did you do to your 1st Gen?” concerning that rear brake bias adjustment? Couldn’t find that post you put up the other day. Thanks in advance.

BTW, I did an adjustment and its worked. One of the other guys needs some input.

Figured out the 4wd issue. The front actuator gears are stripped out. I have a doorman one on the way. once that gets here I'll bring the truck in to the dealer.

oh. and the airbag light and non-working cruise control are because of a bad clockspring.

The Toyota dealership WANTS to do your frame. It's easy money for the dealership. They bill Toyota close to 40 hours and it takes them maybe 20 hours to finish. They can check out your truck while it's on the lift and recommend repairs. But I've never heard of a dealership turning away a Frame replacement. I would call and get an appointment for them to inspect it. It takes a little while for the dealership to get the frame after they order it. Hope this helps.

    Good luck with the build

Called the dealership this morning. Apparently they're a little backlogged with stuff right now so the soonest they could get me in for the inspection is November 26. Ouch. I may just call another dealer at that point.

Edit: I called another dealer and it's getting inspected tomorrow at 5:30. that's a whole lot better than a month from now...
