Hi everyone. I'm totally stumped here. 2008 tundra crewmax 4x4 is failing at anything after 1/2 throttle. I'm at 214xxx miles. It only seems to be doing this while in gear. I can floor it in park or neutral and it revs to the moon. However while driving, it falls on its face. Very noticable while cruising on the interstate and trying to pass someone or going up a hill. It really seems like it's a certain spot in the foot pedal rather than a certain rpm. FYI, tried a new MAF sensor, cleaned TB, new air cleaner (stock airbox) , new plugs. Oh and no CEL either. I tried searching a solution before posting but I didnt have much luck. Any help is greatly appreciated

To be completely honest it sounds more like a transmission issue than an engine issue. I'd love to hear other members' opinions.
If there was some sort of misfire or lean/ rich issue causing poor performance then A) it would do it in all gears including park and neutral and B) you would surely have an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp.

If it were me I would start by doing a transmission service including dropping the pan, changing the filter, and filling it back up to spec. If that helps, I would do a few more drain and refills every few hundred miles until the fluid you drain out still looks close brand new.

Do our trucks require toyota specific fluid or is their an aftermarket fluid thats acceptable?

Your owners manual will tell you type and capacity for every fluid in the truck.
They call for Toyota WS ATF which is a non synthetic fluid generally good for 100K miles (depending on usage).
The only manufacturer I know of making an ATF compatible to WS is Valvoline max life synthetic. It's in a red jug. Plenty of people have had good experience with it.

What about when you manually shift it?

    I would check the following:

    - fuel rail pressure. Test kits are relatively cheap. May even have one for rent at a local parts store.

    - I have had on other manufacturers engines have a throttle position sensor have a dead spot and not trip a CEL. I also own a Jeep that has had a CEL light for the TPS for the past 9 years and it’s been replaced 3 times.

-The transmission sounds suspect to me as well. I would get a service done.

It sounds like fuel issue to me. Check out the fuel filter.

Trans needs to be done so I'll do a filter, drain, and fill.

And try to work on the other areas to see if I can get this cleared up.

I dont believe the 08 has a standalone filter. It's part of the fuel pump correct?

Could be a disintegrating Cat that is blocking the exhaust. It's possible that you you wouldn't notice it when the engine is not under load. You should notice a change in the exhaust note when this happens if this is it.

Aren't the CEL being on, with Jeep's, standard. I was thinking they come from the factory that way.

Ha! I do believe you’re correct sir.

For as much as the damn things cost now days, one would think some reliability would come with that cost.

I picked up a fuel pressure test kit today and ran a test. Key on pressure, 41. Start/idle pressure, 41.

I took it a step further and rigged the gauge up to the windshield, under the windshield wiper and went for a drive. Here's where things failed. All good up to about 3000rpm. After that it starts dropping and the more I pushed the pedal down, the lower the pressure got.

I disconnected the vacuum line from the air intake to the fuel pressure regulator and performance improved however it still wasnt how it should be.

Now is this 100% fuel pump or just a bad pressure regulator?

How far did the pressure drop when on the drive?

I didn't get exact numbers (angle of gauge agaisnt windshield+me driving+other cars+60mph=disaster) but roughly in the 20's.

Sounds like a fuel pump to me. Fuel pressure regulators that are failing have different symptoms.

Ok so I'm lazy and still haven't dropped my tank yet. But here's a thought... does anyone know anything about the fuel pump controller mounted on the inner drivers side frame rail above the rear axle? Seen somewhere else on the interwebs that someone bypassed or jumped a wire on theirs. How?

The odd thing is I'm fine up until about 2500rpm. That's when everything drops (power, acceleration, etc) to zero.

Sounds like you're being lazy and looking for the easy way out. Run it down till the light comes on and replace your faulty fuel pump already. You can do more damage than you think running it low on fuel. Fuel cools valves and the tops of the pistons before ignition and if you're starving it you could burn a hole in it somewhere.

Not really that odd. Its tell tale behavior of a bad fuel pump.

Not true. I just dont want to dump $400 on a new fuel pump then find out it's not it. I'll splurge on a new pump if I 100% know that's it.

You did a fuel pressure test and it failed. You have the classic symptoms of a bad fuel pump. Unless you have some phantom voltage drop going to the fuel pump causing it to slow down at 2500 RPM it's dying. You can always test fuel pressure before the filter to see if it drops there but you'll need the right adapter to put it in-line. KISS usually wins in the end.
