Summary

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain JTEKT power steering gear assembly service parts for 2007-2021 Tundra and 2008-2022 Sequoia, part numbers 44250-0C160, 44250-0C131, 44250-0C170, and 11250-0C121. The power steering gear assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can result in an oil leak.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the power steering gear assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 21, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 21TH01.

This is gonna get real interesting...

 

Especially since it claims there are 151 affected trucks, I'm pissed, I need to take my skidplate off to see the rack part number, I just had it off at the beginning of the month

 

Only 151 affected vehicles out of the many thousands produced? Somehow i am thinking there’s more

 

Yeah, 151 doesn't seem right. That's a wide range of vehicle years. Hopeful for a speedy remedy.

 

Ya, statistically there is no way it's that low.

Kinda hopeful mine is part of it, the mounts have been known to fail and it's a major pita job.

 

Or maybe it applies to a very limited number of racks that includes ones installed on the production line and ones sold / installed as OEM replacement parts possibly installed on older models? I’m definitely speculating here, but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me if that number of affected vehicles is correct.

So far my VIN shows no open recalls or campaigns on Toyota Canada’s website.

 

They aren't allowing the sale of thousands on dealers lots or those still sitting at the factory...they seem to know it's one cutting tool out of four that caused the problem...but can't identify which vehicles made during that time frame are gonna have a problem...as far as I've read...

Sounds more like they can't know unless the part actually fails or they take everything apart and look at the cut groove...that's the PITA of it...

If the VINs stay the same I got a 2021 made over a year ago and one made in Sept.
The Sept PRO is on the list...the Nov 2020 Limited is not on the list.

Basically got a TRD Pro sitting in a heated shop I really don't wanna drive very far from home...

Dang it neither my 07 Tundra or 08 Sequoia are covered. Guess i don’t get new steering racks. At least for now unless they update everything later

Why is it 07-21 now? Everything else said mfg during a few month window.

Where did you find the 151 number? I'm also interested in this rack number too. If I could slide underneath and visually identify if my rack was one of the potential leakers, it would make my day. Here I am a thousand miles from home living in a 23" travel trailer wondering if I'll be able to use the same tow vehicle I used this fall to get here to get home this spring.

 

From my take in chasing this recall it that the additional 151 are trucks that had the steering rack replaced under warranty during the time the bad racks were in the supply chain.

 

Yep I believe you are correct just toss the 151 on top of the other 25,000 thousand or so.
Probably about 8,000 trucks effected total but the question is how can they determine who got bad racks without taking them apart to find that out...then the local dealership has to put everything back together
as good as the factory did in the first place...that kinda bothers me...

 

I searched my Sequoia but the recall is all the years.

Seeing the original owner announcement date being moved from January 22nd to February 21st isn't promising. Either they haven't found an easy way to determine affected racks or they don't have enough spares. Maybe both. I hope it doesn't boil down to every rack being removed, torn down on the bench for inspection and those passing go back in the next poor schmuck's vehicle.

 

I went a little deeper on your link and see that. Hmmm. Maybe time to plug my VIN into their site to see if the original recall has been updated.

 

This is what I found. The December recall is piggybacked on the original recall and is for the 151 owners that had racks replaced before the problem was found. So, those early failures may have got another faulty rack installed under warranty. Man would I be PO'd.

My opinion as to why the December recall goes so far back is that a few of those having racks replaced during the target time may have received a bad rack. So, not all dealer installed bad racks were warranty replacements for 2021 vehicles.

 

Well isn't that special. Hopefully we will hear if it affects our specific truck. At least I have tow hooks.

 

Here's what irritates me is when asking a Service Advisor at one dealer she smiled and said I had nothing to worry about. A call to the selling dealer got me, "Huh. First we've heard of this." So our first line of defense doesn't exist. Great.

My rack was replaced right around 35k. Stock one had a bad grease leak where the inner tie rod attached. I wonder if they put the part number on the paperwork i got?

 

Was it replaced after the last week of July 2021? If not, you're probably not included in the recall.

Boy was I off. It was 2018 but the part number matches the recall numbers.

 

How many hours were charged on the sheet for the re & re? Curious if they have to pull the front axle as a few have mentioned.

 

It says 9.9 upper right corner of the sheet.

don't know if mines effect , but I wouldn't mind a free new rack.

 

My daily USPS informed delivery email has this set to arrive today. I've got a 21 I picked up from dealer in Feb of 21, limited CrewMax 4x4. We will see what it says.
