Haha! The suspension is going to be a process, definitely won’t be done in a day. The rear components are arriving Wednesday and Thursday. Then just waiting on the ICON coilovers.

I paid cash, didn’t want a car payment and higher insurance on a new truck, don’t feel comfortable bashing on a new truck and like the looks and drivetrain of the 1st gens. Plus I love building vehicles that most wouldn’t. My last build was the “station wagon” of 4runners, the 4th gen. I loved the reaction from people on the trails when I would keep up with jeeps and tacos on 35’s.

What's wrong g with the 4th gen? 4.0 and 4.7 are solid engines. If I ever bought a 4runner I'd seek the 4th gen v8 as my top choice. Followed by the 3rd gen and the 1st gen.

The 4runner community refer to it as the old person, “station wagon” model because it’s low from factory and doesn’t have the off-road prowess that the other gens do.

Loved and still miss my 07 V8:

Thanks. The V8 was great especially with the 34’s. It was a great platform but unfortunately not enough room and I needed bigger for longer trips.

Looks good! Did it go easy, cutting the bit behind the hood to fit the bracket, and undoing the hood latch one side at a time? I'll be doing this soon so, if there's anything that caused you pause, please let me know what worked. (Yeay, yeah, I know it's supposed to be easy. The part I may need instruction on, will more likely be wiring them up.)

P.S. I've already spent more on my 1st gen than I paid to buy it, but not a single bit installed yet. :anonymous:. That's why I live for your updates!

It wasn’t too bad. The instructions are pretty detailed. Cutting the cowl was probably the hardest part. I used a Dremel and box cutter. Just like @Brown Bear mentioned before, trace where your hood mounts currently so if it shifts during install, you have a reference to move it back.

Dang you had to cut stuff? I have the Rago Fabrication ditch bratckets and they just bolted on. 5 mins per side max.

    Ok,

    1. In my humble opinion and limited experience, the 4th gen 4R is one of the best vehicles ever made. I absolutely loved my 03 and 06. Powerful, smooth, and a dream to drive. I don't think the 5th Gen should even be called a 4R. o_O

    2. That is one AWESOME looking 4R you built there. If I hadn't needed a truck for work that is exactly what I wanted to do with mine.

Do yourself a favor and get the Rago Fab brackets if you haven't already bought brackets .. they just bolted on. No cutting. Slide em in place from between the hood.and cowl, un bolt ONE hood bolt a at a time, starting from the top, slide the bracket in place and tighten the top bolt back up, undo bottom bolt and slide bracket in plate and bolt it up. Done with one side. Rinse, repeat.

You cut a 2’x1/2’ piece of the cowl. I’d rather cut some plastic to have a lower profile bracket and light. Just my opinion.

I agree. I like the lower profile of the hot metal Fab bracket. The lower they set the more they are in the negative air pocket that you get at the base of the windshield well driving at speed. Less wind noise and if you drive with them on in the rain you can see the water goes right over the top of the light. If the number one issue with off-road lights is moisture. The less water hitting them in the Rain the better. Of course though if you buy a higher quality light (Baja Designs, rigid Industries, Black Oak LED) you don't really have to worry about moisture. This is just my opinion though.

Thanks. It was a perfect mix of DD and weekend off-roader. It rode amazing and had plenty of power. I needed something with more space and decided on the 1st gen mainly because it had the same drivetrain as the t4r. I will most likely own an 06-09 V8 again and will either LT or sas it.

My 13’ 4runner is nice but feels too much like a box. The 4.0 is alright but I definitely miss the V8 when I drive it.

@Casper421 do you have any more info you can share on the sub? Performance, and what was required to put it under the seat? I put in all new speakers and stereo but now I need the bass!

It’s a shallow Pioneer TS-SW2002D2 that barely fits in a single 8” box made by Bright Star Car Audio. The sub gets the job done for an 8” and doesn’t take up a ton of space, so I’m happy. Access cabs have a lot more options for subs.

Advertised is 2” unloaded and 1.5” with 500lbs in the bed but it seems to give 2.5”+.

Yes I realized after I hit send that the storage compartment under your seat is much bigger than mine. I don't think that would work on my AC. So far I've only found one box that will work that @Mike has in his.
