New to the forum, looking for advice. I’m in the process of purchasing an 04 Double Cab, but I’m not a fan of the 00-04 instrument cluster. I’m wondering if anyone has attempted/been successful at swapping an 05-06 instrument cluster in a 00-04. Couldn’t find a thread on this. Thanks for your time!

The first image is from the 05-06, the others are the back of a 00-04.

It’s probably doable. But you’re going to have a hell of a time wiring it up. And I’m not sure if the speedo will work because of the speed being sent differently from the 04 to 05 trucks

Yeah, I’m thinking after installing it, taking it Toyota and adjusting the speedometer.

Not sure about first gen, but for 07+ you have to get the odometer set and certified or it’s considered salvage.

well what i meant was the signal might be different because 04 i believe the speed signals taken from the trans, 05-06 the speed signal is from the ABS computer
This may depend on states, but in Indiana if the mileage isnt right the titles branded for incorrect mileage. but not salvage. its till technically a clean title, but with mileage discrepancy

That's what I was thinking. It's one of the bits of info I learned from the yellow box page. Plus theres the gear indicator, and the tach signal. Also the tpms light in the 06.

I believe the redline is higher on 05-06 and the tach goes up higher.

The reason for swap is just preference? I think this is a bigger can of worms than it's worth really.

    See this is the truth

now if it were an 05 wanting to go to a 2020 cluster? Surprisingly that would be much easier

05 was the big shift to “modern” Toyota systems. So most signals from an 05 will talk to a 2020 cluster just fine. You’d just need to move wires around and ETC to get things 100% that being said, the cluster wouldn’t ever fit our dash

My 2019 radio pickups speed and everything in my tundra. So I know for a fact the speed signal will work in newer Toyota speedos

Vehicles 10 years old or older are exempt from mileage disclosure requirements. You write exempt on the title when it's sold and move on. Your not saying it's right or wrong just not required. If you know the mileage is correct or incorrect you can disclose it if you want to or not.

The Federal odometer law, 49 U.S.C. Chapter 327 (Public Law 103-272), prohibits the disconnection, resetting, or alteration of a motor vehicle's odometer with intent to change the number of miles indicated thereon. The law requires that a written disclosure of the mileage registered on an odometer be provided by the seller to the purchaser on the title to the vehicle when the ownership of a vehicle is transferred. If the odometer mileage is incorrect, the law requires a statement to that effect to be furnished on the title to the buyer. However, vehicles ten years old and older are exempt from the written disclosure requirements.

Came here to basically say this. I thought it was weird when I bought my truck, used, from a dealership in AL. On every other used vehicle I've purchased in GA, ranging from 20-50 years old, I've never had them EXEMPT the mileage, yet this truck, of which the mileage almost certainly had to be accurate based on the maintenance history and timeline it showed, was marked EXEMPT on purchase. I thought it was weird, I hadn't seen it before, maybe it was an AL thing or a dealership thing. Called and asked them, they told me the same, then read up because it sounded so bizarre to me, sure enough, it's legit.

I guess the big difference with the other vehicles I purchased is they were all private sale. Dealership just says "feck it!" and writes EXEMPT to CTOA.

I have bought and sold a lot of titled vehicles (mostly motorcycles) and can speak on mileage exemption. For me, it just depends on who you get at the DMV. Some clerks will ask you for the mileage while others just assume it's exempt (if it's old enough) and fill it in for you. It has worked in my favor at times. I bought a motorcycle from a lady last year that ended up with it in her divorce. Before taking possession of it, she had to legal title it in her name before they would repo it from her now ex. They asked her the mileage and she guessed 20K to complete the title. Once she had it, it only had 5500 miles on it. So now I had a bike that had 5500 physical miles but the title said 20K miles. When I put it in my name, I exempted it. It was clear the bike had low mileage but you cannot go back on the paper work.

You have to be careful to because when people swap clusters, mileage discrepancies can happen. If the DMV does a title search, they can view past mileages on the previous titles. If the vehicles does not qualify for exempt and the mileage doesn't add up, they will mark it as TMU (total mileage unknown) which states they don't know the true mileage. This happened to me when I bought a wrecked bike with no cluster. I had to buy one of eBay and the cluster read 5k on it. Unknown to me on the actual miles, I guessed 10K. The last time it had been titled, it should 11k lol. They questioned me and I told them what happened. I didn't have a way to prove the correct mileage so the title was marked TMU.

It's so much a problem on newer vehicles because mileage is stored in the ECM and most the time, the new cluster needs to be programmed once installed. 1999-2006 GM trucks/SUV's were notorious for bad clusters so they are swapped all the time. There is even eBay stores that you send them in to have them rebuilt and fill out a form/disclaimer stating "to the best of my knowledge, the mileage is XXXXX."

Now to get back on topic, I love the look on the clusters but it would probably be a royal PITA to re-pin the connector to work. If you do it, do a write up so we can all benefit from it.. lol

Right now I have the Blue Bulbs, but I’ll switch back to White which I prefer the best. I was experimenting during this phase and settled on Blue due to being tired of pulling the bezel so much.

Some pics to let you know there are options on the 2002 type. No sanding required. Just swap in new bulbs.

Should be the same if yours looks like my set up. Those Blue Bulbs are LED and dimmable! White should be dimmable, too.

My Blue never needs dimming. The white needed dimming for the brief time I had it that way.

Back on page 50? of ‘What Have You Done?’

Its easy. I can’t remember the exact process right off the top of my head. Took a few times to get all the bulbs sizes right. It all started with P and D Bulbs Replacement. The climate control bulbs are even easier.

Just thought I’d update. Didn’t have to settle for the 04 with the horrible(IMO) speedometer. Found this 06 DC with only 50,600 original miles. Have lots of plans for this in the future!
