04 2WD slip yoke question

    Im about to swap out my slip yoke cause it has been leaking. No grease fittings. Been scouring the internet to find what type of grease to put in the replacement yoke. Any ideas? Thanks

    Are you using the VV985 to grease the Double Cardan joint too? I take it that you're using that to grease everything propeller spiders, sliding yokes and double-cardan joint. Only asking, cuz I'm going to do this, this weekend and got the Lucas Red Tacky and see that I need molybdenum for Double cardan, wasn't sure if I should just get moly and use it for all and not have to get another gun.

    What did you think the "moly fortified" was in the product name? :D

    If ever in question, look at the SDS - this is what is recommended for double-cardan thus it's what I use on everything else:

    For 2WD, just use regular grease with no moly.

    memory isn’t the best, but 2wd Tundra doesn’t have the double carden joint which uses the moly grease. All three joints in the driveshaft are the same.

    I owned one from new until 2 years ago (04 2WD SR5 AC). I replaced the ujoints in the driveshaft around 200k miles. No double carden (that I recall). I remember calling Spicer and getting the ujoint part #'s and grease they recommended. Grease was non-moly type.

    It was three of these, per rockauto order:

    DANA 513101X (Heavy Duty) Spicer Life Series (SPL); Greasable
    Fits Rear Driveshaft at Transmission; RWD;
    or Rear Driveshaft at Support Bearing; RWD;
    or Rear Driveshaft at Rear Axle; RWD.

    I know there's no double-cardan on 2WD, just curious if there's a reason you wouldn't go with full-syn NLGI 2. It's a superior lubricant and really isn't significantly more expensive to the dollar. Not challenging you by any stretch, just interested in your perspective.

    Sorry, misunderstood.

    Full synthetic NLGI #2 grease is good. Superior lubricant to non-synthetic. Just get one without moly for the ujoints. I'm not a mechanical engineer, but it has something to do with the needle bearing slipping rather than spinning due to the moly. Spinning is good; slipping is not desired.

    Toyota does recommend the use of moly grease in the double cardan joint, so I would follow their direction for that joint on the 4WD trucks.

    For the slip yoke itself, the moly grease would be fine. My mind got tangled up in the double carden postings, and I wasn't very clear.
