So for the past couple of days, I’ve been getting this notification whenever I lock my truck through the app, anyone have any idea what it wants me to check the rear seat for?

    my wife's kia does this.

Check for dogs and kids! As I have both I find it nice, but I can understand the confusion.

It’s just strange that it’s never done that before, just started this week.

2021 Toyota Camry and 2020 Toyota Highlander have this reminder.. but I am leaning towards child safety.
So I think Toyota may be rolling it out to all 2021 Toyotas

    source https://www.colonialtoyotact.com/blog/how-does-toyota-rear-seat-reminder-work/

What does Rear Seat Reminder do?
Toyota won’t ever be accused of trying to deceive people with the Rear Seat Reminder feature, because that is exactly what it does. When one of the rear doors of a Toyota vehicle is opened within 10 minutes of the vehicle’s engine starting, a reminder will appear on the driver information display on the center gauge cluster – a serious a multitone chimes will be heard if rear doors aren’t opened after the alerts start. Of course, the system will also engage if the rear doors are opened and closed after the engine is running.

It’s important to note that the system might not register engage if the rear doors are opened and closed within two seconds. Basically, the Rear Seat Reminder software is smart enough to know if it’s likely that something (like luggage) was placed in the backseat.

Can I turn Rear Seat Reminder off?
Of course, Toyota wants owners to be able to set up their vehicles in whatever manner they like. Rear Seat Reminder can be turned off using the same controls used to manipulate the driver information display in the center gauge cluster.

As of right now, Toyota Rear Seat reminder is standard equipment on the 2021 Toyota Camry and 2020 Toyota Highlander. You can start the pre-ordering process for either vehicle when you schedule an appointment with a Colonial Toyota product expert today.

It has probably just started because the temps are getting higher. Ya it’s a safety feature so people don’t forget their kids or animals inside the car(could never understand how people do this).

This is for morons/idiots who are more preoccupied about tik tok / facebook, rather than taking care of their kids.

Watching a news report where the dad forgets to take his kid to daycare and parks at work with them in the back seat, which leads to them dying in a hot car.

The soul crushing pain, the fact this happens a lot more than it should... Yeah it might be annoying, but having small kids I'd do anything I could to save someone from that pain, that loss.

I say kudos to them for trying.

Huh, got this a couple days ago. First time.

Between the daddy, daddy, daddy and the dog trying to get in the front seat I’m not sure if how one can forget they have a kid or dog in the car.

Well, it comes down to accountability or the lack there of. Always quick to point blame and not accept the consequences. We are a litigious society. Do we really need to be told, "not to use the hairdryer in the tub?"....apparently we do. How in Gods name do you forget you have kids, let alone in the back seat of a car?

Thank goodness for the fire and brimstone you guys bring to the party. God forbid someone tries to save a poor inocent kid from either a set of bad parents or someone who has lost focus on what should be most important to them.

Let's just watch em burn eh? Not my fault not my problem huh?

Personally I feel like they “forgot” on purpose cause they probably couldn’t deal with all the responsibilities a child brings into your life. So this safety feature is nice, but I know it won’t solve this issue of people “forgetting” their child or animal in the car. So many people breed when they have no means of taking care of themselves, let alone a child or children. So many people think having kids is all fun and games and don’t even bother to think how a child entering your life is a huge deal and responsibility. Then all they do is complain that they can no longer go to bars and clubs and do whatever they want like they used to. Everyone knows some dumbass like this.

Do you have a car seat on the rear sit? I noticed I get notified when I have the car seat there, probably to not forget a kid in there

I contacted Toyota about it when it first started happening. They told me that if you open, and close a rear door when you start your trip, and don't when you end your trip - that you'll get that notification.
