LOL. Not even close. I live on 70 acres 7 miles down a dirt road. My truck is used for plenty of "truck things", despite your childish dig.

In about 2 weeks, I'll be loading up the bed with a months worth of vacation stuff and traveling 2100 miles down to Florida. The whole reason for having a tonneau cover is for keeping that sort of contents dry and clean. I've adapted by using tarps over everything, but it really shouldn't be necessary, IMO. There is no reason the tailgate should have 1/2" or larger gaps all the way around.

I would love to see your pics, thanks.

I found this video of a Toyota technician breaking down a 3.4L. While breaking down the bottom end he notices at the 39:40 mark that the bearings do not have locks/keepers. What keeps the bearings from walking?

Other than thrust bearings, wasn't it determined here that most engines don't use "captured" bearings? (for lack of the correct terminology)
Are we mixing up cause and effect?
Bearings start to seize, THEN they walk? Versus the other way around.

Correct. Toyota hasn't used locating tabs on bearings for a long time.

A lot of manufactures have transitioned away from using the bearings with alignment tabs. The tabs are actually just for positioning the bearing during installation, not to prevent them from walking. Bearing "crush" is what holds the bearings in place. Here's more than you probably ever wanted to know about it.

I like keeping dust out of my bed as well. I made the mistake to keep my softopper rear window off once on an off-roading trip. I tossed a few things in the trash after that.

If one has a gooseneck ball in the bed....you know exactly why keeping dust and crud out. I only like lining my ball once a season.

Now camping gear is in sealed bins...not that I go camping anymore anyway. :hattip:

I don't know enough about the 3.4 failures to comment further. The video popped up in my you tube feed probably because I was researching more info on my PRO that is in freight. I have not rebuilt a motor in over 20 years so my overall knowledge is lacking a bit.

that design has nothing to do with these failures. i still believe this is more of a manufacturing related issue as toyota did get the failure rate down quite significantly it seems - so their claim seems plausible as it being (excessive) engine debris being left over. I still won't trust it until some time passes and real world confirms it.

Ill just PM you so the people who like dust in their bed don't get offended, lol.

you have to piece it together, and there is one kit Ill send you that comes with a larger size section that is the key, plus a little marine sealant.

its worth it to me, I used to drive on gravel roads going to my fishing spot in northern MN with the bed fully loaded with stuff and I didnt want dust all over my shit going on vacation, food, supplies, etc.

mine is basically dust and water tight now, I have at least 9 tonneau cover installs, lol so lots of practice.

You might be surprised. The taxes on our condo in Winter Park are higher than on our 70 acres with a house.

Mind posting this kit for everyone? Will it survive a winter freeze? - the bed rug did not.

sure, this is what I sent Matt.

its just what I did to piece together water and dust tight tailgate area in conjunction with my tonneau.

not the prettiest thing, but its water and dust tight now.

This kit made in USA is what I get, it comes with a larger section as well that is the key to the top at the sides.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IPQWXZQ

    plus some marine adhesive sealant.

I did most of the testing for the pieces with the tailgate closed so you can get it up tight and seal the gaps, mark it out, then stick or stick with the tailgate closed, basically if you can see light, it needs a piece and/or sealant.

you double up the section on the top using the larger size with some sealant to stick it to the other size, this large gap is the key.

put the smaller section from the bed to the top like normal, then the large size piece and stick on top of that. I lined it up and install with the tailgate closed, that huge gap at the top is the offender, plus the bottom of the bed and tailgate gap is key, but thats an easy one. and the little piece on the tailgate.

I did this all 3 years ago when I got the truck and its still holding up through Northern IL winters and now AZ blast furnace

Wow, that's a lot of sealing required. I get a bit of dust in the bed of my F-150 with a Bak-Flip hard folding tonneau, but literally only the back 2-3" so have never even thought to seal it any better. Another acreage owner w/ a gravel driveway.

The Bak-Flip has pretty robust / good sealing system.

Yes apparently anything you put in the bed has to be assumed as being filthy for some reason. I get annoyed when i leave ratchet straps in the bed - come to use them again and they are all gritty. Some people can't get out of the way of their own ego.

FYI, I used the same tailgate seal kit as @Breathing Borla. I did not use additional adhesive, just the supplied peel and stick tape. The little pieces around the top corners of the tailgate were the first to fall off. But, even with those bits in place, my bed was never dust-free. I also have the BakFlip MX4 cover.

As mentioned in the poll noodle video above, I think the underside of the bed rail cap is another major source of dust intrusion. I don't think the pool noodle idea will work there due to the tie down rails taking up most of those areas.

Here's what mine looks like at the current moment. LOL. It's been about 2 weeks since I sprayed it out. I've decided it's a problem without a solution for me.
