I had the truck running with my remote start, backed up out of driveway, hit an ice patch, wheels spun, then the truck died. Cranks but won’t turn over.

gas is full, oil is filled and clean

other than pulling plugs, anything else I should check? Pulling plugs in a bit to check them out, but hoping for ideas/suggestions while I work

Have you checked for any pending codes? Timing belt up to date?

Agree try and pull codes also crack open your timing belt cover and see what that old girl looks like.

So I pulled a plug and I it’s black and the tip is white, it also smells like fuel.

I took the four bolts off the timing cover but it won’t come off fully. I was able to s so a pic of the belt in there. From what I can tell it seems tight when I tried to move it. The belt was changed 40k miles ago

I tried to hook up my code reader but it’s saying the car needs to be running to read the codes. Can’t get into pending codes either.

If you unlock it with the physical key then lock it with the keyless entry on the remote start will it start via remote start fob again?

Will try that next, once battery is charged.

I took out all the spark plugs, wiped them off and put them back in. I tried to crank it and after a bit the battery died and it started clicking. I’m charging the battery now. Could it have been my alternator? Battery is months old, but car has been sitting since 2 weeks ago. It’s weird because the car was running for 10 mins with the remote start.

I'm not sure but the electrode on your spark plug is worn down to a nub. They look past due. No clue if that would keep it from starting though.

That plug is bad, time to replace them for sure. I would change the plugs, while doing that remove the + batt terminal and let it sit while you replace the plugs. Reconnect the battery and see if she fires up

How long has the remote start been installed?
Plug looks ready for replacement, but in my experience old plugs cause poor running, not no running.

Didn’t think about the remote start, yeah plugs need changed but if that doesn’t solve it I would target the viper.

It did start up fine with the remote start and ran for a bit before I inserted key, turned it to on, and backed out of driveway. Can faulty remote start cause it to die then crank/no start?

Sure it can, it’s hooked into your ignition system electronics go bad instantly sometimes and that could definitely be a culprit. Might not be but could be.

Possible fuel pump took a crap. Try to find location of fuel pump. Bang on it from underneath with a block of wood while some tries to crank it.

If you have a remote start if your battery dies and you unplug it can throw the module back into installer mode and it will just do a crank loop. If that’s the case it would have to be reprogrammed.

Your plugs are definitely shit and it’s already apart so might as well replace. Don’t forget your anti seize.

You could check alternator voltage with a meter or disconnect battery after its started to see if it will stay running.

Spoke too soon, backed up out of driveway and she died with the same symptoms. Will post results of remote start test after I get her situated.

Maybe a far out idea; are there crash position sensors that could be faulty, how steep is the driveway?

Highly doubt it’s your remote starter. I can tell you that if you take it to the dealer to have looked at, they will say that it is the problem regardless. Your vehicle doesn’t have an immobilizer so it’s not losing the key. As for the viper, the ONLY wire that gets interrupted is the starter wire. ALL ignition wires just get “tapped” into. Internal relays on the starter wire either work or don’t. If you want to verify the remote start, you can easily drop the under dash and look for the ignition harness. You will see a purple and green wire that is hooked to the starter wire. Cut loose ( leave slack to re attach) and temporarily reconnect the starter wire. Regardless if ANY other wire is still hooked up, you have bypassed the remote start. At least for starting purposes. Again, if you take it to a mechanic, bypass the starter wire the way I described so they can’t say it’s the alarm.

If the remote start was a problem, would I be able to start up the car, warm it up to temp, then drive 1/8 of a block before it dies? I was going to try the method posted below tomorrow.

Before I cut any wires to verify your way, I will test alternator and fuel pump as others have mentioned.

Can you hear your fuel pump running when you turn the key?

Will it consistently start, or is it back to not starting at all?
As has been mentioned, fuel pump maybe. I did have a similar problem (with a Volvo), and it was the fuel pump, it was very inconsistent, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t, until it got more consistently unreliable it would just sporadically die.

If your remote start is one that has a geofence it’s a possibility. I’d avoid cutting out the remote start unless you know what you’re doing. Some of the high end units have multiple modules that connect together. One under the steering wheel and another under the dash.

    About 173k miles

The truck does not consistently start. Here’s a recap:

After 2 weeks of sitting in driveway, I used the remote start to warm up my truck. Once she was warmed up, I got in, inserted key, put car in reverse and backed out of my driveway until the rear tire slipped on ice and the car died. Truck only got about 6 ft before dying.

tried to start car, but crank/no start.

    pushed car back into driveway.

Checked timing belt and it seemed secure and checked spark plugs. Plugs were horrible. Upon cranking to try to connect my scanner so I can check for codes, the battery died.

replaced spark plugs and charged battery (12.6v)

started car and let warm up, backed out of driveway and got 1/8th down the block before dying.

Crank/ no start using key and remote start.

    Here’s how it is currently.
    (Video of it cranking)

How many volts did your battery have after you drove it then it died? Hopefully you just need a new battery :fingerscrossed:
