Height and weight dependent, 4’9” and 40lbs and under, typically 8-10yrs old. But a shoulder belt adjuster that lowers the belt to cross the collarbone is the required practice. Not a an actual booster...

OREGON — (ORS 811.210(2)) [YOU’LL HAVE TO SCROLL DOWN THE PAGE A WAYS]
    • Children must remain in a rear-facing child restraint until they are two years of age, regardless of weight, or if a child is older than two but weighs 20 pounds or less.
    • Children who weigh 40 pounds or less must be properly secured with a child safety system that meets the minimum standards and specifications established by the Department of Transportation under ORS 815.055 [which simply describes child restraint systems which meet FMVSS 213 standards] for child safety systems designed for children weighing 40 pounds or less. SR4K note: The RideSafer has been meeting or exceeding FMVSS-213 crash test requirements since 2004 for children who are at least 30 pounds.
    • Children who weigh more than 40 pounds and are 4’9″ or shorter must be properly secured with a child safety system that elevates the person so that a safety belt or safety harness properly fits the person. As used in this paragraph, “properly fits” means the lap belt of the safety belt or safety harness is positioned low across the thighs and the shoulder belt is positioned over the collarbone and away from the neck. SR4K note: Although the law states the child must be elevated as in a booster seat, it also clearly states in subsection (3)(b) (as seen below in second exception bullet) as long as a child is properly secured in a child safety system which meets FMVSS 213 (such as the RideSafer) this requirement does NOT apply. Plus the RideSafer is a harness system which makes the seatbelt “properly fit” the child as intended by the law.
      • Unless the rear seat of the vehicle is not equipped with lap-shoulder belts, then the child may be secured with a lap belt
      • OR if the child is properly secured with a child safety system that meets ORS 815.055 (see above) for children weighing more than 40 pounds.
    • Children who are taller than 4’9″ OR 8 years of age must be properly secured with a safety belt or safety harness.

I have an old Chevy without rear seatbelts. So I had to get very familiar with the actual laws when mine were 1&4 because 1 officer said “they don’t need seat belts”, and another said “put them up front”.

My 1969 OM hilariously said use pillows on the floorboard and back of the front seat!

Sorry for the dumb question, why not? As long as you have tension, you should be ok. Right?

There's a video on U-tube of the ball snapping off and killing 2 not 1 but 2 people. NEVER use the ball.

Whoah ok, Roger that. I guess the ball stem is a source for a weak spot. I can see how it can quickly go sideways for you’re not careful.

Yeah, you know a D-ring receiver recovery point is only about $30. Worst case you can safely just use the pin through the receiver. I don't 'cause I'm afraid I'd bend it. ARB has some great videos about recovery.

Yea there are countless videos of people recovering using the ball and it slips off or the ball rips off. Shattered windows and deaths. Very very very risky to use the ball.

Yes. Make sure the d-ring pin is fully screwed in and the hitch pin is installed correctly with clip.

What would be good quality for this product, in other words where can I buy a quality one? I'm sure all the ones I have found on eBay or Amazon are junk versions of these.

Also, people lose their shackles ALL the time. In the maritime world we "seize" or "mouse" the shackle pin with stainless wire (a zip tie works in this application too) lead through the hole on the pin and around the shackle itself to prevent the pin from spinning itself free. This way the shackle is still there when you need it.

I just don't leave mine in. I usually have a ball hitch back there so when I use the shackle it comes back off and into the toolbox or bed again

This! I wish everyone would. I pulled out 2 people at Big Bend in September after a heavy rain and both times neither one of them had anything. I know not everyone has a winch and honestly not everyone needs one but one of those guys had been waiting for someone to drive by for 2 hours. What if I wouldn't have had a strap either? The least anyone should do is have the gear for someone else to help you if you cant get yourself out.
