sry, I bought off some random shop on instagram, I dont remember who.

But they are Energy Suspension bushings. Try looking on their website or calling them

Energy Suspension Bushings are definitely good stuff. I put them on my dads old Tacoma a couple years ago, and like you said, they really helped stiffen the steering back up.

Nice! Thought Bruce @papasmurf had Delrin bushings made?, was wondering if they are too hard for the application. What do both of you think about changing them without pulling the rack?

@papasmurf @osidepunker if you didn't need to make the repairs to the crossmember would the bushing replacement have been possible without pulling the steering rack completely out?

    No.

The instructions that Energy supplies with the bushings say that you can do it with the rack in place. I wouldn't wish that on my worst ex girlfriend. The stock bushings are pressed in metal sleeves, two halves. There is an inner metal sleeve for the bolt and an outer metal sleeve thats pressed in to the rack housing. I had to pound on the lip of the outer sleeve with a chisel for about an hour just to lift the lip away from the housing on one side without damaging the rack housing. Then we had to weld a rod to the inner metal sleeve so we could pound the rubber inner bushing out. Then we carefully hammered and molded one side of the outer metal sleeve in until there was a nice half face so we could pound it out from the other side. Then we were able to use a socket to pound out the other half of the bushing. total time was two hours just to remove the bushings and I don't see anyway to make it go faster.

Now, the instructions say to use a pickle fork. We had one, but too small. But even if you were to use a pickle fork you still have to get the lip of the sleeve separated from the housing and there is no way you're going to be able to do that while the rack is on the truck.

He had delrin on a previous rack and the dealer has since replaced a rack and left the stock bushings on

I think @Spvrtan did it without pulling the rack by himself.

Yea, I did mine while the rack was on the truck. It's doable but definitely a bit more annoying than taking out the whole rack and doing the swap on a table with space ..however, taking the rack out completely is also more work in itself. So I suggest leaving the rack in place and dealing with the tight workspace.

As for the upgrade itself.. I also HIGHLY recommend to anyone that actually offroads their truck to do it. The rubber bushings wear out easy. I'd venture a guess that my bushings started going bad around 50k miles on the truck and I could hear the squeaking/popping and the steering was a little loose. I went to polyurethane around 75k and the squeaks/pops are gone and the steering feels amazingly tight.

    UPDATE:

December was a little busy for me so I haven't really touched The Truck. But yesterday I had the steering wheel clocked and got the toe adjusted. Drives great now and I can definitely feel the tighter bushings on the freeway. When Bruce and I were down there last month we found a small crack on the cross member by the drivers front mount for the front differential. I put it off for anther day. However, when the alignment shop was down there yesterday they found the drivers rear mount for the front diff is also cracked. Basically the mount that hangs off the frame for the diff is cracked almost all the way around and about to fall off.

    fml

So I'll need to pull the diff and get these cracks welded. Oh and I also found my bed cage in the rear is cracked on both sides where the RTT rack is welded to the cage. So I have to get those fixed and reinforced as well. Hopefully everything should be glued together before the Parker prerun on the 18th

and the lesson is that I hope you guys are putting your eyes on your truck on a regular basis. I am always inspecting The Truck, but even I miss sht.

It's a sign Alex for you to do your gears while your front diff is out.

Nice! I really want gears and lockers, but after 5 years of spending big money on The Truck, I'm done. I need to concentrate on other things in life now like my house haha

Besides, I've never been stopped on the trail because I didn't have lockers. There's always a way to get through. They would help for sure, but its more of a want then a need for me. I'll get them one day maybe

So I got all the cracks glued together. All in all it wasn't that expensive. I still can't figure out my damn VSC. Its super sensitive even after doing the Zero Point Calibration. I have to turn it off because its basically useless. See this thread: Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) Extremely Sensitive (Advanced Troubleshooting)

I missed posting a couple trips from last year, Anza, Joshua Tree, and the Turkey run. But I'm kinda internet lazy nowadays haha. Here are some pics/vids from last weekend Parker Prerun:

Well call me a sucker, but I have a set of REM polished nitro 4.88 and ARB rear locker sitting in my garage waiting on installation LOL

The Truck is currently at the shop getting surgery. Should be done this week. Then I have some wiring and airline plumbing to do, then gears/locker installation.

Also, I'm working with Bud at Budbuilt on some replacement skids. The ones I have are 1/4" aluminum. They've held up pretty good, but after 4 years of bashing they're pretty bent up. Bud is going to make me a set of 1/4" steel with some additional custom ribs for support. Then I'm going to figure out a way to guard my forward LCA cam mounts. They're pretty bent up from rocks so I have to do something about that.

My goal this summer is to clear John Bull with minimal damage haha @Spvrtan you wanna run it with me??

Someone say John Bull!? Let's plan it!

I'm building belly sliders to replace the skids I took off but I had BudBuilt 3/16" stainless steel transfer case and gas tank skids. They got some good gouges but never has either skid bent or warped even after dropping on them a few times in Johnson Valley and Corral Canyon. 1/4" steel is overkill and if you're going to spend the cash on the thicker steel, might as well get the slightly thinner but stainless steel version.

    Just my .02 cents.

We'll like I said, I bent the shit out of my 1/4 aluminum. Don't forget I weigh a little over 8000 lbs, 4100 lbs on the front axle. On paper, 3/16 steel isn't much stronger than 1/4 aluminum. I'm ok with overkill. A lot of stuff on my truck is overkill. These skids will also have additional ribbing as well. I think they'll only add about 100-150lbs of weight which I'm ok with since I've dropped some weight in other areas. Hopefully they'll be the last skids I buy.

I'm definitively ready to plan John Bull! I should have the skids in 2 months, so either June or July

    The Truck is rolling again!!

Next week I'm installing gears and locker so this weekend I have to get the air lines plumbed and the wiring run. Then I have a fckn laundry list of items that I need to inspect/repair before Baja next month. And I have to do all this with a broken wing fml Thats ok, I'm excited to finally get my hands on The Truck. Especially since I missed T2S.

    20190502_152621.jpg

Upgrades in the next month or two include another shock revalve (I'm gonna put the rate plates and flutter stacks back in the bypasses) and new skid plates. I'm also chewing over ideas to armor up my front LCA cam bolts. I have some minor things in the works, like mounting a spare CV axle assembly somewhere, re-arranging my cab switches, and shifting some gear weight around. The skids are gonna add weight to the front of The Truck so I want to shift some weight to the rear so I can keep my 50/50 weight distribution.

Mentally I'm in a different place now. I need to change my attitude about how hard I go in life. It doesn't matter what I do, work, girls, MTB, off road, I seem to GO HARD at everything. 110% all. the. time. So when it come to girls, I end up single. At work I end up alienating coworkers (I just can't help being a badass haha). Off road I end up breaking The Truck. aaannnd MTB I end up doing this:

    IMG_20190416_081458_582.jpg

    20190501_145633.jpg

This is my second collar bone plate. Now I have matching hardware in both sides. I'm not a cat so I don't have 9 lives, but I've definitely used up two of them. 6 years ago it was broken clavicle and broken neck (C7). That took a year to heal. This time around it was concussion (with amnesia), broken clavicle, and broken/separated ribs.

Two years ago I went head on with a Chevy on the trail. A couple months ago I flopped The Truck on its side.

So I'm putting this out here publicly. I am going to SLOW DOWN. Seriously. Wellll, I'm going to make a conscious effort to slow down haha I need to stop and smell the roses. The adrenaline rushes just aren't worth it anymore. I'm still gonna do what I love, I'm just going to take it down a notch.

Anyways, thats just a little insight into my mind at the moment. Stay tuned. Baja next month, then Big Bear, then Mammoth, then Sequoia, then North Rim, then back to Baja, then Moab, then Death Valley, then Oregon. I have most of the year mapped out and the Truck is gonna be ready to go...

haha thats the good side. You should see the other side...

Hey man I can't wait for you to get that truck out here and go wheeling with us! We're planning a week long trip in Baja for October. Camping the beaches every night, exploring the missions, and eating fish tacos! Oh and a class 5 truck is gonna guide us through all the GOFAST trails...

Definitely in for Baja, that's always been my dream trip. Working on getting it out there this summer and do some final tweaking.
