Bougt a 2019 tundra trd pro that came with all that safety sense crap. The Sensor in the windshield sucks because a new windshield will be expensive. Can’t after market that windshield, because of the sensor. I live in the St. Louis, MO area and cannot find a dealer close to me, without driving across state or to Memphis. Anyone have any answers? Windshield protection film would help us all

    Welcome from TX!

I would suggest making sure your insurance coverage is adequate for windshields. Then just make a claim if needed, 3rd parties can still get OEM.

I doubt a film would do much to protect your windshield. A glass company can get the windshields with sensors in them. The company I use asks what features we have if we need just the glass or one that is heated etc. But yes, they can get expensive if they have the fancy stuff in them. What sensors are in your windshield? Are they in the actual windshield or behind it in the mirror etc?

I have a big black unit attached to the mirror, onto the windshield. I believe thee TSS sensor is in the grille emblem.

What sensor is IN the windshield? Usually they are attached to the vehicle and have a gasket that rests against the glass.

Thanks everybody! I finally looked at my windshield and the camera is a black box on the inside of the windshield and separate from the mirror. I also have a sensor on the grille as well. My 2014 tundra did not have all the safety crap on it, so it’s a learning curve. First time on any tundra forum as well. I’ll have to contact Toyota or windshield replacement places to see if the only the windshield needs replaced. Any other ideas would be welcomed.

Here's my recent experience with my wife's Lexus RX. 2018 model year, 2 weeks after purchase, got a a crack. Only option at the time was OEM glass since the model basically just came out. After glass replaced, I had the sensors "calibrated", thinking it was required. $2k in the hole for glass and calibration. Just recently we got ANOTHER crack in the windshield! This time aftermarket glass was available. I went with that and didn't bother recalibrating sensor. It works fine. So long story, short, go with aftermarket, don't bother recalibrating unless you are getting wonky hits on your sensor. From what I understand from all my research, aftermarket glass is 99% in quality to OEM at 1/3 the cost. If you find a good glass shop, they will warranty any glass issue and replace for free. As far as the sensor, just like your rear view mirror, they just glue back on in same location, there is nothing actually "in the glass".

What part of St. Louis are you from? I get all of my windshields replaced by Anytime Autoglass out of Desoto. They were by far the cheapest. They actually know me at this point. Had to have my windshield replaced this summer and when the guy showed up he said, I told my partner he must have gotten a new truck since last time...
Is your windshield actually broken or are you just checking to see what it would cost if it did?

I agree w those suggesting going the insurance route. My wife just got a crack in the windshield of her new car. Had to be replaced w OEM due to the safety features... zero out of pocket other than the few bucks extra I pay for coverage
