So my daughter was taking a bath and had the jets going on the tub (the jetted tub I did not want to install about 10 years ago but ex wife just had to have).
Anyway she tells to me as I'm putting laundry away to tell me the water is getting low. I run in and kill the jets, then hear water, run downstairs and theres a stream coming out of a can light in the kitchen and a nice crack thats leaking.
Looks like a cheap ass plastic nut that connects a pipe to the pump cracked and failed.
I just spent the last 2 hours vacuuming water from the ceiling and pulling soaked insulation from the tub area. I think, and hope this will be limited to sheetrock repair, and a new fitting on the tub pump. What a shitty end to the weekend. Pics of aftermath, I'm sure I'll be pulling the ceiling in a few days.

That sucks. If it makes you feel any better my master bath tile shower is leaking. I'm sure there is some mold behind the wall already. I really need to tear it out and have it rebuilt, but am dreading the cost to do so. I haven't had any estimates yet as its well beyond my scope to redo a shower myself. I can rip the old stuff out to save a bit, but probably will be a few thousandto rebuild.

Sorry to hear. We always try to talk people out of putting those in anytime they want them. You always have trouble with a jacuzzi jet tub or whatever.

Ouch, that really sucks. I got rid of our hot tub because the same kind of crap kept happening. Good luck, water is a sneaky bastard and gets in places that you sometimes can't find until it's too late.

yikes... fortunately u have heat running in the house.. up the temp a few degrees and run a dehumidifier if possible to help draw all that moisture out and the damage may be minimal. good luck .

Make sure when you replace the nut that you support the pump properly so that it is not stressing that nut. I’ve seen this before. Sorry it happened to you. Stick a fan blowing into the access and leave it on for a few days.

The fan is set up and blown. I removed everything I could get that was wet and sucked up all the water. Found some more damage too.

    Sorry Sean!

We have a crack in one of our showers, likely mold under it.

We have only been using one shower for the past few months, waiting to save some money to get it and start over.

I hope there isn't too much damage. Use your insurance if there is.

I will have to assess the damage once its dried out. I'm hoping I can fix this myself, I can replace sheetrock but will need to have someone tape it for me. I'm really hoping its not worse than I think. I need to pull the crown molding off the cabinets to see how bad it is in that area, I'm beat so that'll wait til tomorrow after my 12 hour shift, or Tuesday. This sucks. I have been busy enough, and now this. Oh and syrup season is a couple weeks away, which is about a 40 hour work week on top of my actual job lol.

My estimate is that the tub lost about 5 -10 gallons of water in about 5 minutes. I am lucky its leaking from where it is, I can just not use the jets til I am able to repair it. I can still shower and use the rub, just can't run the jet pump. The pump is secured in place to a plywood sub structure that the tub is also mounted too. Not sure why the nut cracked other than likely being over tightened when it was installed (by me), but it hasn't leaked in 10 years and many uses.
The shitty part is the plastic nut that is cracked can not be replaced without removing the pipes for the jets, meaning I really can't replace the nut at all because of where it is and how its attached. I will likely have to just cut it off and replace it with a furnco fitting, I don't see another solution, and I just won't ever run those jets again. My daughter will be sad about that.

Go figure I recently bought some new tools and built myself a nice workbench to do some projects, kinda get myself motivated. I always enjoyed home repairs and woodworking, I like doing a variety of projects, just not sheetrock lol. And none of my new tools will be helpful at all. I guess I jinxed myself

I hope so too. Once everything dried out I'll start cutting back the sheetrock and see how bad it is. I can throw in some patches but I'll need to hire out a taper

Could be worse, slow leak over time and mold takes over.

I have tried many times and just can't get it to look good without spending a ton of time sanding. I may give it a go this time around but usually more time/cost effective for me to pay a pro for that part of the job

This one isn't bad. It's on a seam so your gonna have to cut back to the next 2x on both sides. Unless that's as bad as it is.. might get away with some spackle and paint.

    20190127_204927.jpg
This one sucks. Your going to have to pull down the trim on the top of the cabinets and try to get a piece to be behind the trim. Unless it doesn't swell, then you might be able to get away with some paint after it drys.

Put a little space heater pointing at that drywall. Best thing you can do in this short amount of time.

Sorry 'bout the leak Sean. Honestly, because you caught it right away, it doesn't look too bad. Taping is super easy, I know you can do it. Topping and texturing can be an art. But, if you wanna get a guy to come in and top after you've taped, shouldn't be very expensive. I'd think 2hrs or less.

none of that looks very bad from your photos.
let it dry .. & skim coat mud over it.
if you don't feel comfortable doing it hire it out..
looks like a couple hundred bucks to me
you may get some minor mold on the underside of the rock but that will dry too.
once the moisture is gone, the mold will go too.

if your crown has not warped.. leave it alone.
you will never get the new stain to match your cabinets

Sorry man. I’ve had a couple of plumbing issues myself, and like you, I can’t tape and float Sheetrock. I had a leak in a bathroom a few months ago, and the plumbers had to cut the sheet rock to repair it in the adjacent washroom. I’ll likely put Bead board over the sheet rock to make it look nice instead of taping and floating.

On a side note, let’s get some led retrofit kits for your can lights. Send me a count of how many you have. I know a guy who sells them. ;)

Thanks guys. I'll it squared away. Luckily it's not a slow unknown leak. More like someone dumping 10 gallons of water out in a second floor closet lol. Once I pull the crown molding down in the kitchen and everything is dry I can start patching. Just sucks as far as the time and money itll cost.

Home from work after a 14 hour shift and started assessing the damage. The drywall is still wet in the kitchen ceiling and the moisture issue has spread out about 2 feet in all directions past were it was last night. I kinda expected this. I should have just cut the drywall out of the ceiling last night so it wouldn't sponge effect out further but i had high hope's for limited damage and was exhausted from everything. I have space heaters and fans set up all day, I hope for some drying overnight and I will see where I'm at. Most likely will be cutting out some ceiling tomorrow to stop the carnage. Kinda like attacking rust on a dodge, I'll cut out beyond the moisture and figure it out from there.
