The dag thread has been killing me. Our fam needs a new pup.
I posted in there about our 14yr old Chocolate Lab Charley-Dog that was my wife’s Christmas present 15 years back (passed away peacefully last year). He has been missed like crazy, and I think now we’re finally ready for a new pup.

Does anyone have Wire Haired Pointing Griffon experience? I realize they’re pretty rare, but I think they fit our family very well.
My wife is pretty much dead-set on this breed. I make 95% of our family decisions, but this one I’m kind of leaving up to her.
Since it’s a hunting dog, I’m not complaining.

We found one locally, and the breeder has grilled us like crazy. Lifestyle, home, where dog will be kept, etc etc.
She denied us last week due to 3 6hr periods through the week the dog would be alone. Today she called to say she’s reconsidered after my last email and she wants to come visit our home tomorrow.
The WPG named “Gracie” is AKC and NAVHDA registered, coming from a family of pedigree hunting lines.

We're close to pulling the trigger on a "Griffy" as well. I wish I had experience with that breed. They're so damn close to GSPs that I'm guessing a hunting dog is a hunting dog, right? Good lookin' pup in that picture. No way I'm showing that to the wife and kids.

LOL! Exactly on the hunting dog point! I’m kind of hoping so. GSP was my go-to but my wife said no.
I’m heading into unchartered waters on my end......(sorry, watching Jaws right now)....lol.
From what I’ve read, they’re similar to a Lab/Golden, but way faster, smarter, and hunt like a MoFo. But shed less, and are smaller. But are more sensitive.
I don’t think any dog could be more sensitive than our last Chocolate Lab, and for that I loved him to death. I do hope that’s the case. It’s what made him a better dog (imo) than others.
This crazy ass lady is coming over to our property/house tomorrow - so we’ll see how that goes.

Give her some BS line about how you'll use it as a service animal and take it into restaurants and fly business class with it in your lap.

Thanks!! I think we’d give the pup a loving home for sure. And excersize the shit out of it!
Yep, kids and wife are soooo damn excited!
I am too, but I know how much work is ahead of me LOL.

I hear great things but I also know they need a job to do like hunting or something to keep them entertained. Have you ever considered a Doberman we had one that recently passed away he was great with my kids really reminded me of a lab .He was great.

she sounds like she is slightly on the crazy train. the dog will adapt to your schedule.

I had Short Haired English Pointers years ago. Great dogs with lots of energy and were hunting machines. They were great with my daughter who was very young at that time. Wish I could have another one but the wife isn't too crazy about having a dog plus its hot in FL during the summer months.

So this biatch wants me to commit to taking the dog through hunting courses, but she hasn’t done it with her own dogs?
    I’m confused.

your breeder is looking for YOU to PAY and spend YOUR TIME to up the value of her line of dogs.

dog breeders can be a bit crazy and I think even more so those who get involved in the hunt test stuff. WPGs just aren't the proven bird dogs some other breeds are. more hit and miss at least based on my research in the past when looking at bird dogs. obviously the value of puppies goes up if your potential buyer pool increases in size.

Pedigree breeders can definitely be a tad peculiar. The last one i dealt with was just like the person you're dealing with. She would only sell them fix if you weren't a regular at shows and had a notible reputation, and this was for a damn cat! An expensive damn cat! Went through the same thing with my late grey hound Cedes.

I do understand why and its for alot of good reason so i respect that.

Its a weird feeling though cause they are judging you, a person/family fit and capable to own a pet.... Like, can i just get the laziest dog you have then?

Yea, that’s what I figured. She’s just doing it to benefit her.
Now she wants to change the contract LOL

What do you guys think I should do?
I don’t know what the consequences the contract would hold if I didn’t do the training program.

She seems determined enough that she would sue you to enforce the contract. I assume the contract says if you breach, she can take back the dog?

There have to be other Griffy breeders less on the crazy side. Red flags are going up with this one. (I do love the thought of her attempting to get a judgment in her favor and then asking the Sheriff to repossess the animal as your kids stand there wailing. Yeah, not happening, lady.)

My rottweiler came from a high kill shelter in Darlington SC. Got her from "One Life to Live" rescue in Scranton. The little Coon Hound mix came from North Myrtle Beach spca while on vacation. You can tell they are from SC, cuz they go woof woof ya'll20190116_172609.jpg 20190123_211219.jpg

A buddy of mine has a grif, dang good dog! Very well trained and very intelligent!

The pup through the crazy lady was $1200 no breeding rights. She never was upfront about any of this craziness, which is what ruffles my feathers. She wasted our time. And we’re done with her lol.

I just found a litter less than a week old, 4 hours east of us. We didn’t want to drive that far, but oh well.
They have 10 to choose from (AKC as well). They are $1000 no breeding rights or $1500 with breeding rights.
I told this new lady my story, and she laughed with me and we joked about the situation.
She said they used to have Weimerhiemmers and she likes the Griff breed a lot better (less energy).
We had a good conversation and I’m confident she’s a normal person/family LOL

It was meant to be I think LOL.

So hopefully in 7 weeks we’ll have a new pup.

Thanks for the input on those who know of them!

And yes, we’re on 13.5 acres that back 100+ acres so the pup will have a bunch of room

I have a neighbor that has a registered bird dog. He has done the training with her and the club his friends belong to. His friends are crazy into it. Going to trials and different outings with their dogs. driving to South Dakota from North Carolina is a bit much for me. I know his bird dog loves to hunt and run, but is also a great lap dog and can be a hoot. His friends seem like their dog must always be perfect in behavior and listening. Some times a dog needs to just be a member of the family.

I have a Griff that turns 3 in a couple months. My father-in-law had two which is how we knew about the breed. Got ours from a breeder here in San Diego at 11 weeks. I've trained her since the day we brought her home and she's turned out to be quite the hunter. Never went through the NAVHDA stuff as that's really only good for bragging rights or breeding, neither of which I intend on doing.

As I'm sure you know by now they are a great dog. Limited shedding, great with other dogs, kids, smart and yet dumb/aloof at the same time if that makes any sense. They require a lot of physical and mental stimulation to not get bored. Fire away if you have any questions about the breed or how I worked with her to hunt, etc.

We don’t have the pup yet, but will in a few weeks!
I’m reading a book now - and will post up for sure when I’m finished!

I have a GWP/Chesapeake. Talk about runner. She is a running fool. GWPs are supposed to be aggressive towards cats. This one is the most gentle dog I have ever owned. Even more so than my Goldens

We ended up with one. She’s a sweet dog, but a M F’er to train. Our old Lab was way easier. She’s stubborn.
