I see a lot of CO guys on here, maybe you can help.

My wife has always wanted to see the Grand Canyon, she has a geology degree so go figure. So for our upcoming 30th anniversary we are going to take a trip. We're thinking four corners area for 8-10 days. I told her Moab is on my list, she wants Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. Any suggestions?

Also, it appears you can only rent Toyotas from certain dealerships. Budget and others only seem to have Jeeps. Any dealers with rentals for 4runners or LCs? We'll probably fly into PHX at my niece's suggestion, she went to Grand Canyon, Zion and a few other places last year.

Sounds like a fun trip, I'd be interested to hear the suggestions.

Don't just go to the top typical scenic view outlooks. Get down in it. Take a tour or rafting trip. Haven't been since I was little so I really can't help you on specifics.

I bought this on 1/12/14 and have added a code alarm remote start, an Alpine head unit with Nav and a backup camera.
4 corners is way the Hell out in the middle of no where, I was there. 2 years ago.

4 corners has a great view of the power plant and didn't I see something to the effect that the plaque is off by some amount?

Four courners seems to be a general term for the area. I've got no desire to see an inaccurate plaque :D. But I'm from the east coast so what the hell do I know.
It looks like the best areas are in AZ and UT. Getting down in the canyon is a must, it a toss up right now between donkeys and rafts.

    Hey Brian,

Have you been to Mesa Verde NP? Any do's and don'ts? Headed down there in March for kids' spring break. Wondering if most of the park will be accessible by car or covered in snow (not to mention the govn't shutdown). Offroading? I heard 4 corners is a tourist trap and not accurate, LOL. Wonder if worth the drive to 4 corners.

    Lemme know.

Are you referring to the Grand Canyon? If so, I'm not headed there. Asking about Mesa Verde. Thanks.

Eight days goes by quickly when on a trip like this. Especially if you have to drive distances to get to multiple places. I'm assuming you are going to the South Rim? Crazy thing is once you go through the gates at the end their is a fork. Left is the Visitor center and where most people go. Super touristy! If you go to the right there are smaller overlooks but not nearly as many people. I have had them to myself a few times. Especially when I went for sunrise. Pretty magical! They also offer helicopter tours which I will do next time I am there. A friend did it and said it was amazing!

If you do go to Monument Valley know that there is a dirt rd with a fee if you want to get closer to the Monuments. Some people miss this and view from further away. You can also go to Valley of the Gods. It's much less touristy and a very beautiful drive! You could take the Moki Dugway Rd near Valley of the Gods for some scenic views. Head towards Natural Bridges, then Bears Ears and Canyonlands. That would be a pretty full trip. It all depends on which direction you want to head. Feel free to PM me as I have travels to many areas in the Four Corners states. Hope that helps.

There's nothing at the 4 corners. A place you can stand on and be in 4 States at the same time. Other than that, a bunch of Navajos selling junk. The Monument Valley trip, a couple hours away is great. You can spend a couple days there. Then head for Williams Arizona, and take the Grand Canyon Railway to the South Rim. Have lunch at the El Tovar, a former Harvey House on the Santa Fe. Then head East on 40 and see Meteor Crater. Then to Winslow, Arizona to stand on the corner.

Last spring we drove the Tundra on a road trip through the Southwest/ "American Indian Country". We drove from San Diego to Phoenix, picked up the in-laws (they flew in from the U.K.)

Sedona; Flagstaff; Grand Canyon (book well ahead of you hope to stay in the park; and hope the current government shutdown has ceased, or most of what you'd like to visit will be "closed"); then long drives to Monument Valley (which is the 4 corners area); Canyon de Chelle in the Navajo Nation; all three mesas at Hopi Nation (getting a local guide the same day by asking around at the visitors center when you arrive will work. We highly recommend "Anna" at the museum)... both have conflicting accounts of the same Anasazi "ancient people". Then a long drive east to the Chaco Cultural Center in New Mexico. There's nothing near it but, for an introduction to early culture... advanced in the way of European cultures in the same time period but somehow not what we're taught in U.S. school.... Then more driving to Gallup, NM which is better than depicted in travel planning guides. Descent food and coffee but, best!, this is where to find really well-priced art and artifacts, if there's anything you want. We returned on the interstate through Flagstaff (we love Late for the Train, a locals coffee shop so much, we hit Flagstaff twice); bypassed Sedona, then back to Phoenix to deliver the in-laws to the airport.

This was a great trip, but ambitious in terms of miles each day. We did our trip in 7, 10 will be better!

Let me know if you want more info on where we stayed.

Check out the Painted Desert at dusk or dawn. There is also the Petrified Forest, have not been there. I think it's close to the 4 Corners.
I was on my way to Flagstaff when I drove through the Painted Desert at dusk. I will be doing it again in the future.

If you fly into PHX - Sedona, Zion, Bryce, North Rim, Canyonlands, Arches, Moab
Or fly into Vegas ans skip Sedona
Only know places that rent Jeeps in this area

I agree with the petrified forest and painted desert. Awesome views. Don’t forget to buy stump if you go. Pics of the rainbow petrified stumps I got and the painted desert and petrified forest. It’s also very quite not a lot of people and dogs are allowed in 100% of the park and trails. Almost every other national park has dog rules. Since your wife loves geology she would definitely appreciate the park. Lots of cool history behind the forest and how it got there. Only place in the world with rainbow petrified wood. 8CC6D30F-F77A-41FC-AFA2-FCF7E99028B7.jpg BF64BFB9-0FE0-4530-8A39-0253090DC2CE.jpg 8E11B30A-43A6-4D0D-8B16-6B46A7BBB37E.jpg 44E16700-2089-4413-8685-153DF6456D88.jpg 12B83328-D4EF-4487-9111-3326F8D1494A.jpg

It's been five years since I originally started this thread, don't know how it found new life now. We took our trip in May/June of 2014. It was pretty awesome, rented a 4runner. It's the farthest I've ever been from an ocean in my life. Some of the places we went, in no particular order.

We drove the Moki Dugway, I don't remember where we were going, but it was worth the trip for the road alone, seriously curvy.

Monument valley was way cool, the Led Zeppelin DVD cover is there and the place where Forrest Gump stopped running.

We went to Natural Bridge, the one in Utah, not the one in VA and the Navaho National Monument.
