I pulled the factory drop in liner out in preparation for Monstaliner or having it Line-X'd and I have a small rust rot out issue in the bed right above the bed support behind the right rear wheel well. It is about the size of my entire hand.

Suggestions on how I should repair? Was thinking of welding in a patch but then it would just rust from the backside. Also thought about using Bondo with a wire mesh behind it since its right over the bed support.

    Any input greatly appreciated. IMG_4568.jpg

You're going to have to cut out the rust from the bed and weld in a new piece of sheet metal at the very least. You won't really know how much other work you have to do until you identify where the rust stops.

My 2010 had the same except it was on 3 corners. The body shop removed the bed cut out the rust and glued in patches. While the bed was off they sand blasted all the surface rust primed painted and put some rust proofing on the bottom of the bed. I then had a lineX put in. There was a TSB for these if you were in the rust perforation warranty they put a new bed on for you. I was out of warranty so I had to pay out of pocket to fix.

I just had it at the dealer for the frame perforation inspection and they found no perforation in the frame....makes me think I should look closer at the frame. I doubt it would cover this. Trying to fix myself cheap without pulling the bed. It’s an 08, not gonna be perfect. Think I can get away with bondo?

Mine showed the same symptoms. Body shop told me to get a new bed.No matter what they did it would come back.
The crossmember on the bed are notorious for rusting, frame may be fine.

The body shop that did mine charged me $1,100 to pull the bed and do the work. I had about $1,700 in it with the LineX. From what I understand the bottom of the bed did not get sealed correctly so water gets in and rusts from the bottom up. By the time you see the rust it is already ate through to the top. If you have a bedliner in you wont see it until it is out of warranty. You may never see it if you don't take the liner out. Mine had a bed rug in it when I bought it used. The issue I have is I had my oil changes done at the dealer. Why didn't they bring up the TSB so I could inspect it while under warranty?

I wouldn't use bondo. You're asking for problems down the road, probably not a long ways either.

Plus you're planning to put in the work of a new liner.

If you don't want to pull the bed then you'll need to cut out everything you can from the top. Go buy yourself a 120v wire feed welder at harbor freight. Get a piece of sheet metal. Piece it back together and weld it the best you can. Make it strong and then grind it smooth. Liner will hide it when you're done.

Sounds like you are adverse to welding, maybe you're not and I'm just implying. Easier than you think and would be better than bondo. Ask a few of your buddies if they weld, a 12 pack goes a long way towards some quick repairs.

Not opposed, just figured it would rust the patch again from underneath cause I can’t paint it until after it is welded in, and because of where it is, won’t be able to get paint coverage on it. I have all the tools to do it other than the welder, and I can borrow that from a friend.

Make sure you hit both sides with some rust converter and paint before you coat it, or you'll have the same issue in a few years!

I have an email in to corporate and a support case number waiting on a response. I know it was a TSB and have seen many a post on the forum that it was replaced by Toyota no cost. I will be pushing for the same. Regardless of it being out of warranty and not being the original owner, this is bull that the bed is rusting out so badly and should not be happening. The rest of my truck is IMMACULATE! Frame is fine and all the other stuff is fine, light surface rust at most. Many an old Chevy or Ford truck bed with just paint and no advanced rust prevention does not have this issue. The structure of the bed on the Tundra should not be this badly compromised with rust, unacceptable to me. I can’t affort to put a new bed on it and not willing to spend 1-2k to have a body shop try to fix it and I know it will eventually come back anyways. Hopefully Toyota decides it would be nice to replace my bed at no cost

You could probably get away with unbolting the bed and lifting it up far enough with a jack on top of the tire to do any repairs. One side at a time.

Well looks like my next move is to remove my factory bed liner and check what's under it. Thanks for this post I hope it all works out I will be watching for updates.

This spring/summer, the plan is to sand or blast bed, and paint in rustoleum or equal......

Bed is not going to fly off in the wind going down the beltway, nor am I carrying cargo to drop through......

very common under those liners. it keeps rubbing the paint/metal and hides anything. best is to pull them out before too much damage is done and go with Line-X or similar imo.

I caught mine before it was a hole. The paint was bubbling up. When I bought mine used it had a bed rug in it. I took it out one day to clean and was thinking of doing a linex. When I saw the rust went to google and found the TSB for this issue. Of course I was a year out of warranty. The dealership was no help. I did get them to do a work order saying I came in and complained about it. If for some reason in the future there was a recall I had documentation that I had inquired. This is just one of the corners but based on the images I posted above you can see what all was cut out.

Based on all the pictures I’ve seen it wouldn’t matter if we had a drop in liner, line-x, or a bed rug. It’s rot from the bottom up, not the top down. I have a case number with Toyota corporate now. Going to call Monday and discuss to see what they’ll do.

Blue streak metallic is the best! anyways glad you caught it before it’s a total hole, but as I said I think no matter what liner we had the rot is coming from the bottom up The bed supports are rotting out causing this from under the bed. I’ve seen 50 year old trucks without this issue so I’m gonna press Toyota for some results on this. I just got my truck back from the dealer after the frame inspection for the warranty enhancement letter I got and there are NO perforations on my frame. The truck is immaculate. The bed is the only issue on the thing and it’s crazy that the rust is so bad on it. I’ll keep you all posted on what happens with Toyota.

I agree it is coming from the bottom up. The bad part is Toyota knows this hence the TSB. The problem I have is there is no extended warranty on this. Most will not see it if they have any type of protection in the bed, unless you inspect for it. I didn't know about the issue until I found my rusting. My bed did not have a scratch on it when I took the bed rug out. The rust was the only thing wrong with it. From the pictures I have seen the places it is rusting is the same on all of them. I did use this problem when I called about my cam tower leak that I was out of warranty on also.

I just got off the phone with Toyota yesterday they will not do anything to help me on this subject I have though gotten underneath the truck trying to find Rust spots or holes I can't seem to find any yet the truth will be told when I start grinding on this thing and see how bad it really is I guess

I think I read you can't see the rust from under the truck. I do believe it is rusting at the cross support of the bed which is probably why it is rusted close to the bed bolts.

So I have now found mine is all the way to the support bracket under it in some spots I have been told to sand it all down amd then use 3m 8115 panel adhesive to fill it in then sand it good and take it to line x. Anyone have any thoughts on this ? Also some one said use por.15 to fill it. Both products will still the rust also.

POR15 is probably your best chance at stopping additional rust after you cut as much out as possible.

That panel adhesive is some strong stuff. I'd probably trust it. I don't know how thick I would apply it though.
