Fair enough. Its worth doing some reading on him if your interested in finances. Like I said, his debt repayment and budgeting plans are for the most part very good.

However, he has some very anqituated views on debt, credit, mortgages etc.

Check out his books and website to understand him them do a google search of "dave ramsey wrong". Lots of financial folks take him apart, mostly on the same issues. The interesting ones are from millenials.

Ok, I get it. My wife and I definitely had our fair share of CC's early in our marriage, but realized , all it did was take away our monthly spending.. We also realized years ago that simply saving money could get us out of any jam. It just seems to me that we have been better off without them. The mailbox sure is jammed with offers though !

You have to be careful about that because if you don't use it often enough, they will just close it and that puts a blemish on your score too. I use mine for auto-bill payments and that's about it. Right now, one of mine has 5% back at gas stations, so I take advantage of that by not using my "regular" card and gaining the points back. Once this period of 5% is up, back to bill pay it goes, and it only does like 1 or 2 bills.

Dave Ramsey has a ministry based "get out of debt system", books written and workshops around the country. He has made it big, went broke and is on top again. He has a radio show, His main focus is getting folks out of debt, people that are in over their heads, some looking at bankruptcy.

Ramsey's home buying advice, understands that folks cannot save that long, recommends 15 yr mtg. max with a payment no more than 25% of monthly take home pay.

I agree with the 25% take home, but disagree with the 15 yr mortgage.

The rates of a 15 yr mortgage are better and of course a shorter term. All good things. I’m not going to tell anyone what I have, because....well it may be counterproductive of what I’m saying next.

You can do almost the same with a 30 year mortgage with paying extra ever month, or annually. The benefit to going this route is life happens, and let’s face it, not everyone has the same income level. Say one of the income contributors gets layed off. Sometimes finding a replacement career or job is difficult and can take a significant amount of time. Now instead of paying extra on your monthly mortgage, you can not pay extra and cover the bills for a short period of time without much sweat. Once the other person gets back in a solid possition, start paying extra again.

Now in the same situation on a 15 yr mortgage, you are stuck with the higher payment with no relief, if needed.

Just another way of looking at it.

I also do not usually carry loans on vehicles, and if I do it is a very short time.

Life does happen, We kind of split the difference on recent mortgage, went with 20yr.
Too Many are loaned that 25-30% of monthly on a 30yr which makes it difficult to pay that extra.

Yep, and that’s their choice for sure. When the crap hits the fan, it really can be devistating for sure.

Nothing wrong with that either. Everyone needs a place to live. You can pay someone else’s mortgage or your own.

Some people are on semi-fixed incomes, and that’s fine too. Some of those people didn’t plan on getting injured on a job, at no fault of their own. Shit happens for sure. I see on a daily basis our Blue be faced with early retirement due to work related injuries.

Life sure has a funny way of throwing obstacles in our way. It’s up to the individual to either be blocked in, climb over, or blow that obstacle into the stratosphere.
