I bought a 2018 TRD 4x4 crewmax in July of 2018 and I have yet to get the messaging feature on the radio to work. I somewhat blew it off at first then tried it again later with no luck. Here recently I have been told by Toyota it’s an Apple thing and Apple is telling me it’s a Toyota thing and the last thing I as told is it’s because I don’t have the CarPlay thing. I have an iPhone SE. I drove to the dealership recently where I bought the truck and the rep did get the Audio thing to work because I played YouTube video through the radio and she told me it must me a setting in my phone because she couldn’t get the message feature to work. I went to an Apple store and was eventually told it was because I don’t have the CarPlay feature but reading some of the threads, it sounds like I don’t need CarPlay. This is getting rather frustrating and it’s like everyone keeps passing the fault to someone else. I don’t understand why it don’t work if it’s an option in my radio. I did have a mechanic supervisor at another Toyota dealership telling me it’s the Apple phone causing it not to work. Please help
    Frustrated in East Texas.

Salutations from San Antonio. I believe it's the Apple phone. I have an android phone and the message feature works fine in my 2016.

Can you describe what's going on? Works fine in my 18 Crewmax SR5 by pairing iPhone and pressing the phone button on steering wheel for a few seconds (to dictate a message or talk to Siri).

Welcome. I gave up after a few tries because it was more annoying than anything else. I will try again this weekend and see if I can get it to work. I am sure both Apple and Toyota are causing the issue. The whole entune/radio system is a piece of shit

I’m watching this thread because I have the same exact issue and can’t find an answer either.

On you phone go to settings > Bluetooth > CarAccessorySystem (<- this is the name my tundra is under the Bluetooth connections) tap the (i) info button on the right and switch the “Show Notifications” switch to on...

This also worked for me when I first saw this inquiry back in June or July. Has worked flawlessly since then.

Starting with the basics, have you successfully paired the phone, and are you able to make hands free cell phone calls?

I can’t speak for the OP, but for me, everything else works fine. I can even receive text messages on the head unit of the truck, but I cannot send them.

Go to Bluetooth -> car accessory —> turn on show notifications —>

Then back to apps on head unit and go to messaging app . It will connect and then you can see the messages.

I’m trying my best to figure this site out. When I touch the envelope thing on the screen and say yes to messaging... it eventually go back to the screen with the connect option not being high lighted. It says you may want to use your messaging feature and does that mean press the button on the steering wheel? Seems like I read that earlier

Yeah, if you hold down the call answer button (pickup phone icon) for 3 seconds it'll activate Siri and you can tell it to text whoever. It's kinda clunky but it works.

I tried this and it said “your phone does not support this feature” but for some reason I was having a problem getting the Bluetooth to connect. Ugh. I have an iPhone SE.

Looks like the SE should be fully supported. Check this site and fill in your setup just to be sure

Are you up to date on iOS? Have Siri enabled?

It says I’m up to date 12.1.2
I so much appreciate your help on this and when I get home from work tomorrow I will go to the site you suggested and do what it says and see what happen. I did check it out a bit and when i got to the phone carriers, I didn’t see straight talk. I have the same phone and switched from Verizon to straight talk over a year ago but it’s still working off the verizon towers, if that makes any sense.
    Thanks again

I have a 2018, and my iPhone 6 Plus was working with messaging both using the steering wheel to talk to text and displaying on the head unit. Once I updated to IOS 12, the talk to text stopped working, but it does still show on the display. My sales person who set it up originally can't get it to work post iOS update. I did figure out that if my phone screen is on, it will work. It's driving me nuts trying to figure it out.

Thanks much for that information. I am so use to to IPhone so I wish Apple would do something. I’m wondering if it still works in other vehicles after the update.

I just got off the phone with Apple care and there is a very recent update that may possibly remedy our problem. I will update tonight and try it out and let y’all know

I've been through 3 apple phones so far, everything works including the messaging on the head unit. I would delete personal data and start over...

Sounds like a phone permission issue.

It's always permissions guys, check your BT settings in you phone to make sure you're allowing the phone to talk to the truck. It's generally in multiple places, not just pairing alone.

I will check that as well. It’s got to be a Toyota thing because my phone works great in my 2019 F250 work truck but it has CarPlay so maybe that’s why it’s easier
