You need to be a fan of the Tennessee Titans to appreciate the name of the Titan, since the Truck is named for them, since they (at least) build the 5.6 in Tennessee. Nissan really wanted Tennessee people to want their truck. Now if you are a fan of any team BUT the Titans, this is not your truck...are you from Tennessee by chance?

Does the Titan have a leaking cam shaft tower seals? Just saying.....

Overall I think Toyota builds a better vehicle than Nissan but I think you could still have a reliable Titan if you take care of it. No one on a Toyota forum is ever going to recommend anything but a Toyota.

This is a very true statement but I would completely support the buy of a Chevy over the titan .Well let me rephrase that a Chevy with a duramax anyway .

I though we are supposed to "talk him off the ledge" not compare apples to apples. I happen to like the Titan, even looked into one before a Tundra, however they base all models on one frame length, and do not make a 4 door (not even a King cab) with an 8 foot bed, just a regular cab with an 8 foot bed, which does not suit my needs. That made it a no deal for me. But I did like it! I also like every truck I have ever driven that did not break down, so, admittedly, a low bar here.

The 5.6 also has the starter underneath the plenum, so what should be routine long term do-it-yourself part changing project, is now a fairly big and potentially expensive project. Starters do fail...
Not a cam leak, but still seems a bit silly to put it there.
    Also, that tiny rear axle...

You couldn’t get me to buy a 1/2 ton anything but a Tundra.

The cam tower leak is unfortunate, but in most cases people would never know they had one since the oil never hits the ground.

Tundra all the way. The new Titan is POS. Worked at a car dealer for a few months while I was trying for a job in my field after moving across the country and they got a 2018 Titan in on trade. Only good thing about it was the Rockford Fosgate Audio Speakers. Tech was even more outdated than the Tundra's, transmission shifted like crap and they're notorious for issues, The rear window defroster plug had already snapped off the glass at the solder points because of the stupid place Nissan put it. Overall, a mediocre truck IMO. The Tundra will outlast it for sure, out tow it, and is overall built better. No vehicle is 100% perfect all the time, but Toyota's issue are few compared to many others.

I think the cam tower thing has been blown up too much in my opinion. It is not really a "problem" per se. It doesn't HAVE to be fixed really....unlike the Nissan that will HAVE to be fixed a lot. My wife has a 2010 Altima and it needed a new transmission at 100k because it had a bad CVT, thankfully covered under an extended coverage from Nissan due to them having made some bad CVTs. If it wasn't covered it would have been roughly a $5k bill and I would have dumped it like the crap it is right then and there.

Tundra was the ONLY 1/2 ton truck that I was comfortable purchasing used without hesitation. I bought my truck with 104k on it, didn't even flinch at the decision. Would NEVER have bought any other brand used with that many miles and expect it to be problem free. Love my Tundra. Take care of it and it will take care of you for the long haul.

My opinion....don't do it. Stay with the Tundra.

Cam tower isn't a big deal until your the one with it and the motor is getting torn down to fix. Yes in the scope of things its not a huge deal like your going to loose all your oil.....but it is a component failure none the less and shouldn't be shrugged off. The more people that shrug things off like this the less likely Toyota is to solve the issue which they have proven they are unable to.

I will agree with you that it should not be happening and they should rectify it. I'm just saying comparing to other manufacturer's failures, this one isn't really that "bad". While I think Toyota still builds a good truck....I would argue that the 07 and 08 were the best built of the current generation. No evidence of cam tower leak on my 08. Time will tell.

I agree, My Tundra has been a good truck to me so far. Yes rated MPG is lower then most manufacturers, but once you start working those trucks its right down there with the Tundra. I had a 2014 Silverado before the Tundra and my MPG was pretty much what I get with the Tundra with the exception of unloaded Highway mpg which the Silvy won but I hardly do as I'm always loaded or pulling something.

I'll fall on my sword here. I picked up a Titan a year ago, brand new, smoking deal etc. 6 months later I dumped it like a hot potato and got a Tundra. They just aren't the same rig at all. And do NOT get a cummins, they aren't ready for prime time.

too many little things going on that Nissan calls "Normal" transmission did some strange shifting, resolved itself etc. It's the first time in my life I made a major mistake like that, I did lose some money on it but I really didn't care, I wanted out. The dealer and manufacturer support is non existent all the way up the corp ladder.

So, you wanted to know, I can tell you first hand, not second, and no conjecture that you should NOT throw any money at the Titan.

It’s a semi-serious post in response to my own (admittedly drunken) curiosity. The XD in question is a gasser, with quite a few add-ons (life, etc.). I was hoping for a discussion on the technical merits of both trucks, and what I got instead was absolute hilarity; I think I like this outcome better...= P

    And I’m keeping the Tundra...

Well, I'm by no means a fanboy, my Tundra was my first Toyota of any type, coming off years of Jeeps (for me) and BMW/Mercedes (for the wife). I dated a girl in college who drove won of those little Toyota pickups (1984).

While I Love my TRD PRO, I really wanted an HD Duramax, or Ram Powerwagon, and looked seriously at the Titan (std & HD). Dollar for Dollar, inch for inch, the Tundra was the cheapest and most solid of the bunch. Not as plush as the GM variants, or stout as the Ram, but heads and shoulders over the Titan that felt like an upsized Nissan Sedan, not a truck. Ford's are amazing and the #1 seller for a reason, but too much fluff for my likes. The GMC 1500 or 2500 with the All Terrain/AT4 package was my first choice, but was 15K more than the Tundra. In a rare chance of serendipity (and dealer inventory mishap), I got my 2017 TRD PRO in August of 2017. They didn't know they had it on the lot. USAA however knew they had it, I pushed, and the salesperson tracked it down for me (as tucked in their offsite holding yard and FORGOTTEN), and I bought it over the internet while in Afghanistan and got $2k off sticker............. Sales manager was pissed........ lol

So what I am getting at is that I would only own a TRD PRO, preferred a GMC, not a fan boy, dont think the cam tower leak thing is an epidemic, AND.......... The Titan is a POS............ ;-) OH, I LOVE my TRD PRO, average 17MPG and am having a blast, despite the extra loud valvetraiin that drives me nuts...........

Now that right there is funny... Haha I'm sure there are worse things you could have done drunk on the internet.

Good move on keeping the tundra it is hard to resist some of the newer style and content with the tundra is a solid truck.
