    Hiyeeeee

I am shopping for my first truck and am really interested in a Tundra. I need a vehicle to haul a
bumper pull horse trailer weighing 7500 pounds max (that is a generous loaded estimate for an aluminum with 2 horses/feed/gear). I estimate driving 14k a year and hauling for about 5k of those miles. Hauling trips will range between 10 - 1000 miles (lmao I know a range but we're talking about local park vs. national competition). Locally, there short hills with a 10% grade and I want to feel confident pulling up that in all four seasons.

I am looking at a lovely 2016 w/ 19k miles on it. Has the 36 gallon tank.

SO this is all a long way of explaining why I want to hear people's experiences.

What I am curious to know is what do you haul, how often, and for what distances? How do you like the experience?

BTW I see there is a what do you haul thread but majority had no weight listed and def not frequency/duration.

I don't tow a lot with mine, but pulled a trailer/car from AZ to NE and back (about 1300 miles each way) roughly 5K pounds. Tundra pulled it great even up through the rockies, no issues with power or braking. Averaged 14MPG according to the computer, not bad at all for driving about 75mph.

Power and brakes are good, tongue weight and rear sag not so good. Add a leaf or air bags help with the sag, but your tongue weight may/may not be ok.

I’ve towed a 6k boat with mine quite a bit and it’s fine but we’re in a flat area. For more serious and consistent towing like you’re talking about I’d try to borrow some friends trucks and tow with them to see how they do. Don’t see many horse trailers behind Tundras.

The Tundra tows like a beast, I have a variety of trailers I pull for my business, a travel trailer and a car trailer that's 7500lbs loaded and this truck is awesome on the highway at speed. It is very surefooted and never leaves me wanting for more power. 5-6days of the week I have a trailer behind my truck, its done very well.

A couple picks with my truck loaded down I tow from here in Indiana to branson Mo a couple times now no problems at all. You wont have any issues pulling that horse trailer .Go get a tundra you will love it .

A little of this and a little of that.
The times I’ve towed with my 16 5.7L it’s done fantastic. TOwed my fathers camper (a little over 8,500 lbs) and it rode nice. I agree about the sag though. If I was going to tow freaquently I’d get some bags or AAL...

Leaf or air bags totally doable.

    Tongue weight.

My estimate of the loaded trailer at 7500 is generous, because my calculation actually put the weight at about 6400 (2800 empty trailer, 2600 horses, 1000 gear/feed - already high on horse weight and gear) but I went way high to be safe.

At GTW of 7500 and assuming the tongue weight at 9-15% of it gives me a range of 675-1125 tongue weight....max on the 2016 Tundra (4x4 double cab sr5) is 1000K.

To keep within the 1000k tongue weight GTW would need to be under 6666.

Lmao why do they make a truck that can haul 10k with a tongue weight of 1k??

2008 pulled this from Texas to Oregon down through California, AZ, NM and back home without a problem. Above pic is our 2018, upgraded as the other had 250K.

BTW, this is the 5.7;cannot speak to the 4.6

One thing I have always wondered is how much 5th wheel hitch weight is as I'm looking into a fifth wheel camper right now but not sure about it

Most 1 ton trucks are limited to 1500 lb tongue weight, load distributed of course.

Remember you are looking at 1/2 ton trucks.

75lbs plus depending on design. some get pretty heavy.

Ty. So can they safely pull 6500 pounds? And that would be MAX, putting tongue weight at 1000 lb, appropriate for a 1/2 ton. Do stablizer bars or air bags increase tongue weight capability?

The Tundra can pull 7500 lbs safely, all day long in my opinion.

Buy a Load Distribution hitch with sway control, forget about airbags, and enjoy your new Tundra.

Post pics of the new truck when you get it, and the extra horse power you tow...see what I did there?

The truck will do it. I'm running airbags @55lbs here and 10ply E Rated tires. Truck did fine. Take your time, make sure your trailer is loaded properly.

This is a 22' VNose. I had it loaded to 9600lbs. Checked on a CAT Scale when I got to Dallas. 1100lbs in the bed. (I was a touch overloaded). But truck went 12.5hrs San Antonio to Kansas City with no problems.

My father in law used his tundra with 6 pack leafs to pull his 25ft toy hauler with 2 harleys and 50gal of fresh water and all there gear to TN from WI and they were pushing 10lb with the anti sway load leveler receiver and he didnt have any issues even in the hills of TN. So you should be fine.

I've hooked up many random trailers with many random loads. On 4x4 only roads, Extreme inclines, mud, etc. 4.7 does just fine. Squats a bit... I've overloaded the tongue and pay load to many times to count. I'm not recommending it, just sharing my experience

Update: I called the trailer manufacturer directly for the brand I want. They confirmed that a 1/2 ton is appropriate for pulling the models I am looking for. He also gave me tongue weights of the empty trailers (two models, one a little beefier, TW 480 & 660).

Apparently since it has a double axel in the back the addition of horses doesn't add as much to the TW?

I bought the Tundra to tow my 22' Champion Bay boat. Full of gear and gas it pushed 5000 lbs plus it is not very aero. I bought it in La and towed 6 hours back to Dallas with my Tacoma. Tacoma towed if fine and the MPGs were almost identical. The problem I had is the fuel tank on the Tacoma is just too small. I filled up 4 times. I could not see going to a lake that is 100 miles away and having to get gas twice. I love the bigger tank on the Tundra and I can easily pass slower traffic on 2 lane hwys.. I had Helwigs on the Tacoma and they worked well. I have not needed with the Tundra but with another 100+ lbs on the hitch I would be looking at something.

Sounds right. When I bought my camper they surgested to load the back more then the front with luggage and stuff like that .It all makes a lot of sense

I’ve seen YouTube flips where weight shifted to the back albeit outside was the cause. I would think the dealer meant back but not behind the axle. Striking a balance between being easy on the truck frame and preventing fishtail.
