    Toyota disappoints again.

I was checking the news from the Detroit Auto Show and there is nothing about a new Tundra. What a disappointment.

I am not disappointed. I am afraid the next gen will be so aerodynamic that it will look like a car front end and will have a turbo 6 with auto shut down etc.......
Also, the longer the new gen stays away the longer I have a current model truck.

    I agree, a turbo 6 would suck.
Unless it's a hobby or sports car I really don't want to own a turbo gas engine for a long time. In the compact SUV segment, it's nearly impossible to find a regular V6 now.

Was reading an interview with the VP of Toyota talking about the Tacoma and tundra, he said it will be between 3 and 4 years before we see any updates. I can’t share the article but it’s on carbuzz.

What wrong with aerodynamics and a turbo V6 which is a proven design? I do prefer a V8 and I am sure Toyota can make some improvements to the 5.7L to bring it up to par with the competition (direct injection, cylinder shut-down, etc.). Add an 8-speed transmission, electric power steering, electric coolant fan and MPGs will be comparable. Better quality interior materials wouldn't hurt either. Right now the Tundra is undisputable behind.

Do you still use a flip phone or did you upgrade to a smart phone?

The point you got correct is your second sentence.

Just personal preference. I want a truck to look like a truck. For instance, the new RAM is nice but I just don't see it off roading or working on a farm; that front end looks like a fancy car or SUV. Also, V8 engines will die out soon, and I am a fan, so I would like to keep it as long as possible.
I am actually also curious to see what the next Tundra will look like. It's all good.

I’m happy if we can improve the truck a bit. Really only the issue of cruise control being shut off when in the rain or snow. I drive long distances, and not having cruise is a pain I hate. Otherwise I love the truck more than my 13 that I put a ton of miles on with zero problems

I looked long and hard as I was gearing up to buying recently. I do an overwhelming amount of research and I'm certain I'm not alone there. I seriously considered the F150 because of the Ecoboost line of motors, my preference would have been a 2017+ 3.5l twin turbo V6. Its a great motor and 10 speed transmission pairing - the specs kick ass. I also seriously considered the Ram 1500 Ecodiesel - I love turbo diesel torque. In the end I'm VERY happy with my big block (albeit an aged generation) 5.7l V8 with a Magnaflow exhaust.

I'm curious to what Toyota comes out with its next line of motors but it most certainly will have V6 turbo options. They aren't invested in diesel options in North America and I see them exploiting their chops in turbos or, in their industry-leading hybrid technology.

Before making a purchase I would highly suggest spending some time on the F-150 forums. I ventured over the other day just for the heck of it as I used to have an F-150 and there were quite a number of threads about engines stuttering from the 5.0, 2.7, and 3.5 as well as numerous threads about the 10-speed shifting very poorly. Coupled with lots of moonroof issues, etc. A number of people seeking buy backs on $65,000 '18 models as well.

Not the kind of posts that would sway me on buying one.

    Just food for thought.

we are going to see a brand new tundra in 2020 or 2021, I am guessing a 5.7L with the D4-S technology as in the tacoma perhaps?? our local zone manager didn't want to tell us anything last time we spoke just said there is one coming in the up coming auto shows.

I am also hoping for a couple of choices when it comes to gearing, kinda like what others are offering!!

Detroit show is for the fluff. Chicago is for the bread and butter. Watch out for what the one guy wishes for. Direct Injection! Go price out a fuel pump for a direct injection engine. Then be prepared to pay through the nose to have it installed. Not DIY project with Diesel like fuel system pressure. Those wishing for the V6 with turbos have probably not owned a Turbo motor. Expect around 100k out of each snail. Then rebuild. Its all OK if you lease your truck for say 3 years but most here say they buy for the long term because of durability. If that's the case hope they choose to stay old school. But time marches on.

I got my 18 tundra because of it's simple design. The fuel mileage I could care less it's a truck... If Toyota goes with one of those retarded cylinder deactivation deals this will be my last Toyota purchase. It's a truck... my little 2 cents worth boils down to if you want li luxury buy a car if you want 4x4 but want all the fancy auto this and that get a SUV.

Having owned trucks from the big 3, I purchased my Tundra because of exactly how it comes--dependable transmission and engine, minimal electronics bs.

Aerodynamic = low to the ground = shitty for offroad situations.

I agree on the V6 thing - I won't ever own a truck with a V6. I don't care how impressive the numbers are. I would own an inline 6, but only a diesel. Unless I am forced, I won't ever own a truck with a smaller engine than what I currently have. I am currently crafting up plans for my next project truck. My current thinking is a 514 cubic inch (8.4 L) V8. Shitty gas mileage, and monstrous torque numbers. And my next daily driver truck will most likely be a diesel.

Why don't you see the turbo gas V6's in heavy duty applications? My guess is because they are already being stretched and wouldn't last very long.

As a 1st gen owner, even though mine has low mileage, its replacement is always in the back of my mind. If I had to buy tomorrow, I can say with certainty that unless Toyota fixes the issues with the TSS mouned on the grille, the newest Tundra I'd buy would be 2016/17. I have no interest in nannies that cause trouble with dirt and grime.

When it comes to the next gen, if its 3 or 4 years away as referenced in the article above, I'll likely be in the market. I don't need flash or gadgets. I don't want a neutered engine like the Taco got. I want decent fuel economy, V8 power, storage and basic amenities. Unless Toyota addresses these, I'll stick with a used truck.

    Not nearly enough room here!
The "Big 3 Owner's/Buyer's" who I know will talk-up their trucks with every 'bumper sticker saying' I've ever heard but most of 'em rarely keep their trucks longer than 3-4 years. I've joined their Web Forums over the years and have read some of the constant heartaches, these people go through but they'll run right out and buy another, of that same brand most every time:confused:o_O

Both of those trucks have had plenty of issues. So on the one hand, I do want to see Toyota innovate and improve upon the existing Tundra. But on the other hand, I don't want Toyota to compromise the Tundra's longevity and durability in order to be more appealing to the truck bro crowd.

They might last just fine. And they may very well end up replacing gasoline v8's in HD applications, but there were be little, if any, mpg gain with them since they're not all that efficient when under load.

Can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want v8-like power, you're going to pay for it at the pump. Only exception might be a hybrid solution, but I think Toyota is still a long ways off from offering that in a mass-produced 4x4.

3-4 years is pretty crazy, they will be even farther behind. I don't think Toyota really cares about there truck market, to let the current gen wither on the vine for 4 more years is nuts. Tacoma still needs an actual redesign, not some new body and motor on the old frame like they did. The platform has some shortcomings that need to be addressed to be competitive, same with the Tundra. We all could use a payload bump for sure, and the only way to do that is change the platform up some.

While one day I hope to buy a newer truck, the truth is I am happy with my 08. It's got the 4.7L and 142k miles. I've got to say that the million mile story was definitely a morale boost to show that my truck is extremely capable of that! I'll be on the lookout for the new trucks, but with baby number 2 on the way, I'm going to keep chugging along in my 08. If anything, I will be looking at a camry or something for my daily driver when the time comes, and keep my truck as 3rd vehicle, and to have a truck when I need it.

Sure I can. My 2011 GMC Sierra with a 5.3L V8 got better fuel economy than the current Tundras. My POS 2013 F150 with a 5.0L V8 got better fuel economy than the current Tundras. I'm not asking for 30+MPG. I'd like low to mid 20's like those two trucks got, not the mid to high teens the Tundras get.

That said, I will sacrifice MPG for reliability. GM's cylinder deactivation works well, when it works. I had no issues with my truck, but others reported burning oil and lifter problems. Tundras get terrible MPG, but the engines are virtually problem free. That means alot to me.

Maybe the 4.5 diesel in the 79 land cruiser will be the next engin for the tundra? So far , down under they are having good luck with that engine and it has all the regen crap. I know if that was available I would have went with that instead of the tundra
