I would be looking to get into a different truck- I mean it’s brand new, barely off the lot, and you’re already needing to have it completely painted based on their complete carelessness and disregard. Should be a lesson learned on them putting vehicles through whatever the hell wash equipment they are using. If they were driving it during a repair and did $5,000 of damage, would you want the truck back with that on its repair history?

The dealership will hope or let you settle for the least that t it will cost them. If your not happy they need to know it. they should be supplying a loaner as well., especially if they are working on it.
It may be time to talk with the General Manager. He will play dumb, be ready but polite to ask him how they are going to make this right. That includes buying it back if that is what you want and maybe getting you into a new Tundra.

Its much more common than you all think for a brand new vehicle straight off the transport truck to visit a body shop prior to being put on the dealer new car lot or showroom. Plenty need repair due to storage yard or transport damage. They get loaded onto transport trains from the factory over to huge storage lots in a district and then delivered via open carrier. Lots of opportunities for bumps and bruises. Dealer does not need to notify you of repairs at time of purchase. So who knows how many of you have had a cut and buff or paint work without your knowledge. Not a Toyota thing just a car thing in general. I feel for the OP but lets be honest after 12 months of use the vehicle will exhibit some imperfections which may be worse then some minor scratches. First off-roading adventure with mud down the sides up to the roof will probably break that paint job in to daily driver status.

True. Its also a huge inconvenience for him at this point it sounds like, due to their mistake and trial and error on the repair. Multiple 30 minute commutes to the dealer, and no loaner. Pretty lame. I think they need to compensate him for something.

Also, anything prior to sale is off the record as you stated. I assume there will be service records showing this repaint that could possibly lower the value on a trade in or something? Assuming he keeps the paint nice and doesn't off-road it. If the new paint gets dinged up then my argument isnt valid i guess.

It’s a type of sealant for your paint. Since your truck will be polished it’s the perfect time to have it applied. It’s a really durable finish for the paint. Can be quite expensive but if you could get them to use something like that because your paint is a little thinner now, that would be cool. There are many different companies that make it. Let me tag someone for you. @SouthBoundSteve

Ok! I hope that you're sitting down for this! This morning I received a call from the body shop rep informing that he got authorization to start the repair, but would need me to contact him to give him my permission to start. I returned his call and didn't speak directly to him, but I did leave him a message saying that I'm still waiting to hear back from X,Y, and Z and that I wanted to wait until I spoke to these people first before any work was done. So early this afternoon I spoke to the owners son and discussed the sand/buff option and repaint option. Expressed concerns regarding both and was looking at the dealer to buyback the vehicle and negotiate new purchase. The guy said he would need to meet with others and see the vehicle and call back at 4pm. He told me that the vehicle has already been worked on. I told him that I didn’t authorize any work as I wanted to explore a 3rd option which was buyback and new purchase. And I reminded him that of this when I spoke to him earlier. He stated that I didn’t need to authorize or give permission because I left the vehicle there. I provided via email the voicemail from the body shop rep asking me to call back to go ahead with the repair. I told him that this couldn't be further from the truth because 2 weeks ago I had an issue with my highlander glitch with the infotainment system. The service rep called and said that they would need my authorization before they could diagnose the problem which I agreed to start the testing. In addition, while meeting with the service manager, service advisor, and the body shop rep last Wednesday afternoon—the service manager verbally said that he would need my verbal authorization before any work was to be done to the vehicle. What in the world do I do now??? This has certainly just entered a whole new level!!!! Please advise

If they are willing to fix it and warranty it for free, Just have them repaint, clear coat, warranty and get it out of there .

A loaner I'm the meantime would be nice.

No need to buy a new truck

Lets see pics of the repair/buff/illegitimate work. If it looks good then why worry about all this? We need pics otherwise this is all speculation drama. If you are really worried and wondering what to do then get a lawyer asap! Your lawyer will work it out with their lawyers.

Foolishly, I dropped the truck off (last Wednesday) without taking any pictures and left it there the following day without taking any pictures. The buff job was a complete joke and not to mention a waste of my time even after they assured me that it was immaculate. The estimate to repaint was $3000-$5,000. I'm concerned about the clear coat being thinner and more susceptible to rust as well as a diminished resale value due to the fact that it has been repainted.

Get a new one if possible, thats too much stuff being done to your truck...if its depreciation has been accelerated due to their mistakes then that is something they need to take the hit on, and yes, i would definitely get toyota care involved. To be honest, i might even go ahead and do a consult with your lawyer just to see what protections are involved for you that you may not know about. Not to stoke the fire any more than necessary, but at the end of the day i would always be wondering where the clear coat is going to fail first and why am i driving a truck that they messed up when i paid good money for a new truck that had good paint. Yeah man, i couldnt handle that, go for the new one man.
