Been a lurker here for the past two-three weeks since I purchased my Tundra gathering info on what I am about to get myself into lol! I have never installed a system with amps so I have been packing my head full of all this knowledge y'all already have on here for me, man is it a lot to take in. I sold my 06 double cab Lucchese Edition that had the JBL system with a stealth box in the center console and upgraded trucks for towing purposes (01 Malibu Wakesetter VLX) but feel I definitely downgraded in the stereo aspect once I purchased the truck and made the drive home to LA from OK. I listen to just about everything since it just depends on my mood (rock, alternative, hip-hop, etc but nothing just blaring from the speakers-moderate levels)

Here is what I have in mind:
Keeping the stock head unit for now since I like the stock look and doesn't look to enticing to theives while my truck is parked at the ramp while we are out wakesurfing.

Front doors- ID compents or C5-650's
Rear doors- ID coaxials or db651s
Adapters for all doors/dash for tweeters
Sub- ID or an alternative shallow mount with a box, really only want one so there is still a little storage behind the rear seat come hunting season for poncho, spare clothes, etc.

Amp (s)- Exile Javelin, JL HD900/5, or cheap out for now and get a PPI 900.4 and a 1 channel for sub

    Loc- LCQ-1 or ReCurve EXq

What are your thoughts on which items to go with and what will be the easiest for someone like me with no experience to install?

    Unsure of items:
Amp kit (would need to be complete since not sure what all to buy)

    Length/guage speakerwire

Do I really need sound deadening for a somewhat decent stereo.

Anything else I may be missing?

Thanks for any input and suggestions!

ID is Image Dynamics. I am definitely considering just going ahead and getting a good amp now, but initially I had thought I was going to make the stereo tolerable for around $1-1,200 but I am way over that now so I have been debating on which corners to cut now but they will be upgraded within the next year for sure, more like 2-3 months. If I do cut corners on amps I at least want to get something I can use in the boat to power the 4 6.5 coaxials in it once I replace it with a better amp.

Well it's 1 a.m. and I have only gotten the rear door speakers installed, started at 5p.m.! Can you tell this is my first time, lol!

Attached are pics of some of the goodies the FedEx man brought me that was inside those three boxes.

Here are pics of the rear door install, started with passenger side first. To remove the door panel, I watched the video ********* did for the Tundra front door removal. The rear door is almost the same except sail panel at backside of the door.

I think the pictures explain a little better than I can write it out the steps I took, but if you have any questions on any of it let me know and I will try to clarify what I did.

I think I took a little better pics on this door than the first is the only reason I am attaching them.

I used a 14mm socket to remove the front seat belt bolt down at the bottom of the door divider, and used a 10mm socket to mount the ********* speaker mounts.

Also you will notice where I drilled thru the door wire harness in the pics of it and that is where I ran my speaker wire to run it into the cab and I used a coat hanger withe the wire taped to it to fish it thru the boot.

Also in one of the pics you can see just how much room there is the run wires/rca's/etc. down under the door seal plate when it's removed.

Started working on the passenger side front door first today.

I mounted the tweeter in the dash in the stock location (pretty easy) and mid in the door.

I had to use 2 nylon washers behind each screw for the ********* speaker mounts since without them the speaker hit the window track. Other than that the only thing I needed was 18 gauge butt connectors for the leads on the tweeter to connect to the 18 gauge wire I was using for the tweeters and swap out the grill that came on it with the flush mount piece that came with it. I used 16 gauge for the mids. Running the wire thru the door harness was a lot easier than on the rear doors. I didn't have to drill out a spot for it.

A few more pics of the process. This door caused me some problems because I could not figure out how to disconnect the wire harness to the windows/door locks, so I just left it hanging and moved it out of the way as best I could.

On the rear doors, I had to pull the rubber boots out of the door and pull down the wire out of the way to expose the harness and separate the wire harness where it joins in the door (helps to push the clips in on top and bottom with a small flathead screwdriver so you can push it out far enough to squeeze the clips with your fingers to pull apart), there is a clip on top and bottom that you have to squeeze while pulling apart. Once I separated the white harness pieces, I found a space that I could drill my holes to run the speaker wire thru. I am glad I only used 16 gauge because it would be tough to pull anything bigger thru there since not much room to drill any bigger of a hole.

Hopefully I can install the ReCurve and iPod connector tonight. If it goes easy and fast maybe I can even install the amp so I can have a stereo again!

I was hoping to get the whole ReCurve installed last night but only made it to installing the harnesses and running the wires down the passenger side. I am planning on placing the ReCurve under the rear passenger seat with my amp being placed under the driver's seat.

To pull the headunit, I used the ********* tutorial pics on headunit replacement so not many pics of that part. I also found a diagram to removing the gloveboxes and used it so not many pics of removing them.

I ran my iPod connector thru the center console and into the compartment by notching the 12v power supply for now to see if that's where I want it. I thought about the glvebox but I like to change the playlists too much to put it somewhere inaccessible while driving. I had to get the extra Y splitter that the ebay seller offered separate since I have XM radio as well so one of the pics shows it hooked up.

I also used velcro to place the bass control knob that came with the ReCurve in the cubby hole in front of the shifter and drilled a hole thru the back to route the telephone looking wire that plugs into it.

Also, the ReCurve has an amp turn on connection on it so I didn't have to figure out which cigarette lighter wire to use to run the amp turn on wire!

Mounted the ReCurve EzQ last night under the rear passenger seat. I had to keep it as low as possible since the seat actually hits it just barely when folded down flat. Instead of drilling thru the truck floor (made me nervous), I used Velcro with really short screws to screw down the soft side of the velcro for extra precaution. I stuck the prickly side of the velcro to the ReCurve.

I also found out last night I have a bad wire harness since my radio will no turn on so I have to remove the 10 pin ReCurve wire harness (one with power wires) and another one is on it's way to me. Rob was on the phone with me last night around 10 p.m. to help trouble shoot it! Being I work from 8-5 it is definitely nice having someone who will answer questions after normal business hours when encounter problems or need help/advice on something.

Tonight I will remove the old harness so I will be ready to install the new one when it gets here. If time permits I will try to mount the Exile Javelin Amp under the front drivers seat as well.

Last night I mounted the Crossovers. Ran the wires under the front seats from the front doors and dash for the tweeters where the carpet is already split anyway, up thru the center console and to the front of the console (far front under the cigarette lighter and 12v power supply) and then ran the wire from there to the split in the carpet on the drivers side to where the amp will be under the driver's seat.

I also made the base out of velcro for the amp to sit under the driver's seat.

Go the amp power wire installed last night. I ran it right under the wire harness that goes into the cab from the engine compartment. Same place most have ran it on here that I have read. I was looking for the nipple that everyone mentioned and could not find it until I reached under the wire harness and felt it, it is directly inline with the wire harness right underneath it so I could not see it while standing in front of the truck or over to the side. Once I cut the very tip of it off I ran a coat hanger down into the cab thru the hole I cut. Then taped the power wire to the hanger and put a little dish soap on the tape and power wire. Pulled the remaining hanger that I left sticking out in the engine compartment and the wire came right on thru but requires a little pulling. I used a 4 gauge power wire.

Also last night I went a head and prepped my front seat bolt and base for the amp grounding wire by sanding the paint off of them.

Hopefully the new ReCurve wire harness comes in today so I can hook up everything and test it out! It's been a long week without and radio at all on my drive to and from work.

Got the amp wired up and installed under the driver's seat. There is enough room under the driver's seat to turn it sideways so it sits far enough forward not to interfere with the husky liner floor mats. Had to block up the amp to clear the vent under the seat, so I used some solid electrical panels to give me the height I needed to leave a gap under the amp ($1.25 ea. @ Lowe's and stacked 2 together on 3 corners of the amp). If I had a marine accessory store nearby I would have used the little blocks for boat battery holders to keep the battery from sliding under the amp instead of electrical covers, may still get some so that it cleans up the install some.

I also installed the ported box with 12" sub. I lost a couple clicks when sliding the sat back but I still have plenty of room for the rear passengers. If you need all the room I would probably suggest a 10" sub.

Only thing I have left to install is a new 10 pin wire harness for the ReCurve since for some reason the one I have now, the radio does not come on so I can't operate the system yet. I think one or more of the wires in the harness is faulty or doesn't have a good connection. New one should be here hopefully Monday.

Last night Rob gave me a call about how to get the system up and running. There was a problem with a couple of the wiring harnesses with the power wire not being stripped far enough down before making the connection into the female plug when it was sent thru the machine. A little cutting and splicing got me up and going!

In one pic you will see the yellow power wires that I cut and spliced (still needed to splice in one of the short yellow wires after I snapped the pic). Once that was done the ReCurve powered up. After that, he emailed some test tones to tune the system with and walked me thru how to use them and a multimeter for setting it up. I didn't get the chance to do any tuning last night due to a dead truck battery (weeks worth of doors being open without the truck running finally took its toll I guess). I worked on it at lunch today and just about have everything set. It is night and day difference from the stock speakers alone! I still have a little fine tuning to go but it has exceeded my expectations while allowing me to keep my stock head unit and steering wheel controls so I am happy. You may or may not be able to use the ReCurve for competition but it is a worthwhile piece of equipment for a simple do it yourself upgrade and that is what I was after, especially since this was my first stereo overhaul.

I will snap a few more pics soon and write a little more after I get to listen to it a little more.

Somehow I managed to forget to add a pic of the truck at the very beginning, guess I got to indulged in trying to decide on what stereo equipment I needed to research and get! Sorry for the delay.

Gonna give this thread a little update. Traded in the 2010 for a 2016. Before trading it in, I pulled my system out and pretty much did the same steps to install it into the '16. The only new piece I needed was a new sub box since the back seats do not have hardly any room behind them. I placed an order thru ********* website and within an hour Rob called me personally to see how things were going and if I had everything I needed. I have to admit, I was impressed with the level of customer service I received. My dual 10" subs and box will be here Tuesday so I can wrap everything up.

Pic of the old and new:
