    Alright folks,

Been chatting with Jace from @ExpeditionOne about the possibility of providing the 3rd gen market a viable option for an actual high clearance rear bumper that provides improvement on the departure angle for those of us that wheel our trucks. He asked me to make a feeler thread to see who all would be interested, thus this thread is in existence. Anyway, they are discussing the option of making a limited batch run of bumpers to kind of feel out the market, but they want some more input and commitment from the guys that have been requesting them.

Here is what I provided him as requirements:
    • Hitch relocation
      • Raise the hitch to get it out of the way, but also keep the option for towing. I know some of us wheel our trucks, but still need to use our trucks as trucks at the end of the day.
    • Bed protection
      • I gave him a couple of options in regards to pics, but told him something around these lines.
    • Departure angle improvement
      • Raising the hitch and getting it out of the way will be a huge improvement, but I also gave him the following option, which if possible, would be a massive improvement. See pic below for reference, but the red line indicates what would be preferred .
      • upload_2019-1-11_11-43-23.jpg
    • Swing outs and Accessories
      • Some people like them, some people don't. I would prefer 1 on the pass side to carry a full size spare and offset the fuel tank weight. Swing out to be capable of carrying a full size 35 and/or 37 for the long travel guys.
      • Others want more, since they carry a whole lot more, so please feel free to chime in.
    • Looks
      • Minimalist design, but make it flow with body lines. Too many gaudy bumpers out there with unnecessary flashy things. Again, my opinion, so please chime in.
Moral of the story is that they want input and they wanted a one-stop location for all input to come in. I don't think anything is out of the question, but lets hear your comments.

I am also tagging guys who have expressed interest before:

3-1 level kit with add a leaf. 295/70/18r cooper max. Spider head light tail light and third brake light, tint, badges off, ladder racks, trd pro grill, color matched hood bulge, grab handle, coach builder +2, dv8 front bumper with winch, fender flares, bed cover....
Yes. Simple and very good angles. Also maybe cutouts for lights and possibly a step. Those aren’t necessary. And maybe under 2k.

I can tell you this for sure. If it ends up being a high clearance with our dual swing out the price will be around 2499.99 base. If it doesn't have carriers I can see it being less than 2k easy. As far as steps give me some ideas on what your looking for.

@Porschetech29 has a sweet custom swing out set up you may want to look at for some ideas.

Would love to have something like the top pic. The ability to add in the side protection and swing-out would be great as well, but $2k+ is a lot of $$, so having the option for just the base part and then adding in the rest for an up-charge would be ideal.

If it were only a nominal amount more, having the option of relocating the TSS Side/rear Traffic monitoring would be the icing on the cake!

Btw, I do like the plate bumpers, but having a Tube pre-runner option would be my vote. Lots of us use pre-runner fronts, so a pre-runner rear would provide a more uniform look.

@osidepunker has a great high clearance tube rear. Hopefully he can share some pics. I know his is welded but if it could be done as bolt-on... I would even drill the frame to provide additional support in back so that the bumper sides can be used as a lift point. Would also probably be necessary so that if you come down off a rock w/ the rear tires, the bumper doesn't push up into the rear qtr panels.

I guess that I would be ok w/ it, but I cant see how it would be accomplished without adding height to the bumper, and the ones that I have seen on other trucks usually look terrible.

I don't care about the swingout. This truck is long enough and I'd rather not have that much weight hanging off the back. Other than that yes, yes, yes.

Adding swing-outs later would never be an option due to the assembly. As a customer it would be yours to do what you want obviously, but we couldn't provide that option realistically.

The TSS monitoring would absolutely be something we would be working on, the problem is the calibration and if the OEM system would accept moving it that much.

Tube bumpers are not our thing, so that will more than likely be off the table from the start.

The side structure is something we would absolutely do testing on as well.

Definitely interested. I would like the option for a swing out, but right now I don’t see myself using it. If I went to 37s then I would want it. Light weight would be nice, nothing to bulky. Simple and clean.

Must have a hitch location w/ trailer plug and license plate location. One manufacturer makes this with a flip up license plate, which is not ideal.

    • Recessed shackle mounts. It's important that these don't stick out further than the original bumper itself unless that added room is accounted for in the bumper.
    • Cutouts for at least two light pods, sensors, stock license plate light housings, and trailer connection
    • Space to retain stock trailer hitch
    • Pre-drilled holes for license plate
    • Recessed corners that can be used as a step
    • Tough enough for serious off-roading (needs to be able to take shots from large rocks)

Shackles would be an option so no worries there.

Light cutouts for sure, license plate housing and illumination for sure and the trailer connection for sure. (license plate would probably be relocated similar to our Jeep relocations)

Explain what you mean by retaining the stock hitch.

Corners are probably not going to happen due to the height of the bumper and Toyota's design on the tail lights.

All our bumpers are tough enough for serious off-roading, we wouldn't have it any other way.

@Spolar and @Porschetech29 both have great bumpers. I'm ready to cut the bed and wrap the bumper around.
    Wrap around
    Pre-runner tube style
dust/chase light AND reverse light capable. BD S2s would be cool back there.
Optional swing gate to accommodate 37s, and/or fuel/water. (totally agree with Matt about the weight but don't know where else to put 2 spares.)
    Relocate hitch
Thanks for the tag Luis, @the_midwesterner, but honestly I think I'm gonna need to have a custom bumper built. The Expedition One products look like great quality items but I can't imagine there are that many of us that would agree on a design that would be profitable for them to produce.:fingerscrossed:

No problem man. The intent of the thread is to provide feedback and they can come up with a design that best suits their production capabilities/style. I agree that all of us won't ever come to the same conclusion, but at least its options. From a base necessity stand point, they can see that things like hitch relocation, better clearance and light/shackle options are preferred. They can then incorporate what they can to try and satisfy a good portion of the masses.

I would be interested in one with steps and recessed shackles. Working with the TSS would be a bonus.

Hey Jace, so a couple of bumpers don't play nicely with the Tundra's trailer hitch. I don't remember all of the details, but one of the bumpers for certain Tundra models wasn't compatible because I think the hitch was integrated w/the bumper or something. I'm basically just making sure we don't lose the ability to tow lol.

It was @because_v8 (a 1st Gen’r) bought a bumper (pre-made) and didn’t realized that our factory tow hitches are incorporated into the OEM bumper. He was then stuck with buying a new tow hitch or ditching the new bumper. He ditched the bumper.

My suggestion is build one for each Gen based on your knowledge/skill. Let it be aesthetically pleasing and functional. Sounds like you already know what you want and do not want to do, so mostly its going to have to look good and keep OEM functions to sell. Everything on top of that is gravy/add on$.

Post up some drawings or pics of your art!

It could happen. Basically this thread is to get input for a design which so far looks to be something we can handle, and to see how many serious buyers are here. Like I told the_midwesterner

We have to have deposits and committed buyers before we move forward.

I'm thinking depending on what kind of off-roading you do would depend on the specific needs.

For me (if I owned a similar truck to Luis), a swing out tire carrier would not do me any favors in CO with tight trails, ledges, climbs, etc. Now desert play, I guess that could be a winner. I'm just not a swing out tire carrier person, and I own a Jeep which has a hell of a lot better angles than a truck.

Now I like this bumper, and I will tell you why:

    - Angled design for sliding off rocks or clearing them all together.
    - Exhaust is no longer a big issue. Now we can also dump at axle or just be more careful, but I thought this was pretty cool. Now with this being a diesel, it would most likely burn off any rattle can paint job quickly.
    - Hitch is no longer a low point, spare tire is someplace else.

What could make this bumper even better:

    - Have a hitch attachment under the license plate. How awesome would that be. Removable or hinged plate holder that could use for recovery or light towing.

    wrap_rear.jpg

Interesting on the comments about towing. This will be hard to have a hitch rated to pull significant weight like the factory hitch. Either you wanna wheel or tow your toys. Hard to have your cake and eat it too.

That's a good looking bumper there and I'd definitely consider something like that. My Westin bumper has a receiver mounted beneath the license plate like you suggest and I didn't loose any towing payload.
But I was thinking just the opposite about the swing gate. I think it'd be great for running trails but too much weight (very near 100lbs ea) hanging off the back for high speed dessert running.

Still have the bumper. All the offers I got were way low or down right rediculous. One dude offered me a pigglet and cash  most people offered $300 but I wasn't taking less than $420. I'll likely just hold on to it and buy another hitch
