It's the tech that's in their hands (their phones) that leaves them with no control.

The only vehicle that has higher reliability ratings that Toyota is Lexus. Lexus seems capable of implementing cutting edge engine and technology improvements. Let some trickle down to the tundra. Not a huge fan of clutter technology but power/mpg improvements and connectivity and stereo sound quality as well as some auto up/down window features and lighted switches seem reasonable for the price Tundras go for.

I just heard from Tundra Dude 34 that the New 2021 Tundra will get 30 MPGs. He also mentioned that the New 2020 Tundra will have Apple CarPlay.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
My guess is that it will be like the Tacoma. All new redesign while keeping base engine (4.6) the same and switch the 5.7 with the 5.0 while getting slightly better power and fuel economy. Maybe throw in an 8 speed transmission. I do not see Toyota going all out with turbo's, AL frames, stop/start tech, etc... Not their style and I'm thankful for that.

Turbo v6 with 10 speed, available in hybrid option seen in the Lexus 500 is what they will be using mark my words. With this they can meet the CAFE standards that were set when they started the design of 28-30 mpg. 417 hp, 442 torque are good numbers, not sure about the long term reliability but those are good specs.

I'm OK with the possibility of a future Hybrid drive (if proven Lexus offshoot) and would likely go that route if offered as an option if it meets all my needs and gets decent mpg. Toyota has proven this system with the Planetary gear drive (some call CVT but not a true CVT) in many other Hybrid applications. I have a Avalon Hybrid 4cyl and it delivers nearly the performance of the V-6 version and is very comfortable to drive with the Hybrid drive system. I haven't read any reliability issues with the Camry or Avalon Hybrid drive-trains since owning both since 2012. I get 45mpg over 3 years which is 5 mpg better than the rated mpg but also have some nice mpg friendly country roads on my way to work. Some advantages of the THDS is there is no belt, the alternator is the generator part of the transmission, the starter is the electric motor.(stop starts are hardly noticeable or starter killers). A/C, water pump, and Power steering are all electric drive systems. Braking is done with the generator up until all but the last part of the stop. Many Toyota Hybrid brakes last well into the 100k range with the only issue being they can hang up due to under-use (maintenance lubricating the brake calipers is important). The engine actually runs less under electric drive, or is assisted by the torque of the electric drive motor so engine wear/load is reduced. Toyota has over 15 years developing and proving it's hybrid drive system and there have really been no reliability issues.

My concern would be with the Turbo, however it's been in the Lexus for what will be 2-3 years and Toyota is best at designing reliability. My other interest/concern will be what is the towing/load capacity and capability of a hybrid system. If it gets near 30mpg that would be great, but can it capably tow my 3500lb boat and some gear in the bed? That might not be so hard, but large towing weights we'll see. Anyway, just thought I'd throw some hybrid info out there based on some experience and info I've acquired owning a couple vehicles with the Toyota Hybrid Drive System.

I would think an improved 5.7L and perhaps a non hybrid version of the 5.0L V-6 turbo would be offered for those needing more towing power or not wanting a Hybrid system and perhaps better mpg. I only tow a fishing boat and snowmobile trailer but love the size and overcapacity towing the Tundra offers for my application. A diesel would be nice for the high end Towing needs. I'm surprised Toyota doesn't bring in a diesel from their worldwide Truck applications?

Anyway, I added some newer tires to my 2010 and a OEM mirror backup camera (badly needed for aligning trailer and seeing behind when parking) so should be able to make it to 2021 or 2022 and see if it's time for a new Tundra. Hopefully the styling doesn't include some weird grille design. LED Lighting, Apple Play, Android, 360 view, a decent sound system, dump the factory NAV, comfortable seats, improved storage and phone parking spots would all be nice add-ons.

I think all toyota needs to do with the tundra is add an 8 speed automatic transmission to have more towing capacity then it should be better then Found On Road Dead

I hope it's a 5 litre v8 with a electric motor assist. Also an 8sp transmission that acts like our current 6sp. Save a bit of weight and that should take us to 2050

Tundras are already built to tow way more then 10000 lbs i have a few buddies that work at toyota dealerships and they even say they are over built for a 1500, so with the same 4.88 gear ratio in the axle and an 8 speed trans with better gearing should equal more fuel economy and better a higher towing capacity

Yup. I bought one last Feb and returned in October for a tundra. It seemed fine at first then gradually got worse and worse. By the end id step on it to merge or pass and it would bog down and almost stall out. Pretty unsettling

Yep the good ole v8 will be gone. If you like the 5.7 v8 this will be the last generation as the new trends in auto industry is smaller more efficient engines. I love the engine in my current tundra and will probably hold on to it for a long long time. Same engine I have in my Lexus LX570 as well.
The current engine will most likely be the v6 twin turbo from the ls500 and ls500hybird. It’s also planned on the next generation landcruiser.
The ls500 gets about 28mpg for rwd for combined being aerodynamic so tundra probably be low 20 mpg.

Also, when you look at the 2019 rav4 hybrid they made huge gains on the mpg from the previous generation. 41mpg in the city vs 34.
So this technology advance will most likely go on to the next tundra.

What would be cool, is the next generation for tundra TRD pro to get the 5.0 v8 engine that is in the lc500 and rcf and the gs f sport model.
Or the 4.0 v8 engine twin turbo rumor as well.
So far, no problems on these engines as far as I have heard of.

Yep, Gen 3. They put a car motor in it with a new tranny. I really liked my gen2s with the 4.0 but always knew I would get back in to a full size.

Yep. Had two second generation Tacomas. Way better drive train that the 3rd generation I had. After 36 months with it, couldnt stand it anymore.
