I've only used a Torq once.....belonged to a friend. Seems like a decent machine, but depending on the model, it doesn't match up well with the Griots 6" DA. The base Torq tops out at 4800 OPM, while the Griots tops out at 6800 OPM, and the Griots motor is 25% more powerful. When you combine this with the fact that the Griots comes with a lifetime warrranty and top-shelf customer service, I think the choice is clear. If you have a Pep Boys nearby, they're offering the Griots machine for 127.99, which Autogeek will price match. If that scratch removal kit you mentioned has the Chemical Guys 'V' line of polishes, I think you'll be disappointed in those products. I'm no CG hater, but their polishes leave a lot to be desired

Do you have a link to the specific Griots model you use?

    Thanks for that info!
That looks like a solid machine for sure. I'm not a CG fanboy, but do like some of their washing products. When I saw the 25% off deal on their site I went straight to the polishers, but wasn't sure. I'd rather buy something decent (for about the same price!) and get that much better results.

Buy the 5" conversion kit and you can still use all of your 5" pads. I've switched to the Griots BOSS line of pads from the CG HexLogic quantums. I'll be trying some Lake Country pads next

Definitely swap to a 5" backing plate. It'll be better than buying all new pads and from pretty much all of my research, the 5" I'd the way to go. I have a harbor freight 6" but plan to upgrade soon, even if its just to a good 5" backing plate.

I havent done much polishing but from what I have done, I really like the lake country pads, especially their HDO line. They really work well.

So the early first gen Tundras are notorious for having "chalky" paint, especially the non metallic colors like white. Mine is having this issue. Initially I thought I could buff out the cloudy areas but I'm now realizing that's not a good idea. I guess the clear coat is gone in those areas.

My question is, other than keeping it waxed is there anything else I can do to keep it from getting worse?

Is the info in this thread good advice?

Yes...look at post #5 and it's link to a post by Mike Phillips....Mike outline a process for bringing back single stage paints, which I'm guessing you may have on that 1st gen tundra

Follow up question on this. I tested Meguiar's #7 on a few panels this weekend. It gave the paint a richer/deeper look but didn't remove all the oxidation. I'm not familiar with Iron-X. It seems several companies offer some version of this. Is this the one to get?

It sounds like I need to start over with Iron X followed by Meguiar's #7. After that, should I try wax and then polish or just stop at wax? The post by Mike Phillips was catered towards classic cars.

I’m not an expert on getting rid of oxidation, but I’m not sure Iron-X is going to affect it. It’s for removing metal contamination in the paint. I’m guessing that it’s mentioned as part of the overall process of paint correction. (I may be completely wrong though.)

That said, the one you linked is correct. I’ve tried a couple of different brands, but it’s by far the best.

So I want to get a good, shiny finish on my Tundra, but I don't have the $$ to do ceramic coating.
What are the next best process to do and products to use? And what is best to maintain it?

I can only tell you what I do. I would obviously wash it. The next step is to clay bar. Then Polish by hand or I use a Griots DA Polisher with 5.5 pads. My personal favorite clay bar is Griots. I currently polish with M205 from Meguiars, but I am going to try Menzerna this year. I shine and wax twice a year. Hope that helps.

I think keeping it waxed and polished is the key. Twice a year is good start, Depending on sun/weather exposure maybe more. When I see less beading action I know its getting time.

totally agree. I wax many times per year, at least once per month or so. The difference for me is that I only shine (polish) twice a year because of the colder (rainy) climate I am located.

I was looking at that one. The price point is a bit higher than what I would like to spend, but this kit is fairly reasonably priced. I do need some fat microfiber towels as I only have general purpose thin ones.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Alone, it's a bit higher than my budget, but with the towels and sealant it's a bit more palatable, because I would still need to buy that stuff. I would still need pads and cutting compound and polish as well.

I see. I totally agree it is a lot to get setup. Once you do you are golden. I would call Griot's to make sure it is the same DA. I think that it is, but I don't know for sure. If it is go for it. I love that DA polisher for the price.

these are great pads, but I use the 5 inch backing plate with 5.5 foam pads.

I was looking at the lake country or these. The Americana Global seems to be getting some good reviews from some detail heads. More heat dissipation I guess. They are also exact fit.
