A bunch of buddies just took a handful of Tundras through Black Bear. Seeing some pics of how you wheel, it would be a no brainer for you. Lisa and I were gonna solo it last summer in the Tundra but the pass was still closed - it opened the day after we left.

I know Riley and I are definitely down to try the challenging parts of any trail. If we physically can’t fit, we’ll turn around, but I don’t remember a trail that’s been too narrow yet.

I hear good things about Land Between the Lakes - it’s on our short list.

“Small groups and cover lots of ground”

That pretty much sums up our style too. Bomb the trails and enjoy the scenic pit stops.

Two things I’ve seen pop up from pretty much everyone here who’s actually in the Midwest:

    KAT
    Upper Peninsula Michigan

Let’s aim for dates on one of those two. I assume UP in January or February could be a shit show for anyone not prepared to snow camp. Lisa and I like snow camping, but we’re also not right in the head.

Sooooo, that leaves KAT in January or February?

I may need some time to fix things after I get back from next trip early January. So KAT late Jan?

We are down for snow camping in the UP, but most definitely has a high potential to be a shit show.....

We set on the KAT? I haven't been, but everything I have read says that its pretty mild trails, but it does have the potential to do a little go fast stuff. With the bypasses going on over Christmas, this is tempting.... DBBB is a bit more technical, but less go fast stuff for sure. Either way, late Jan for timing works for us.

KAT? As in the Kentucky Adv Tourl? That's a 900 mile loop, definitely more than a long weekend, even on a big bike.

Yeah we'd just weekend a section of it. There's a pretty neat section about halfway across the northern section that is an old mining area, wide flat roads with lots of exposed baseball to basketball sized round tops of rocks that could be blasted across. Wild horses all around and some side trail offshoots for exploration and camping. Followed by a very overgrown pinstripping section...

This sounds bad ass! You have done this before i presume? You want to handle the route portion for a Friday to Sunday trip? I am currently trying to download the gpx files to upload on my ipad.

Yes I've made the entire loop over the course of a bunch of weekends doing almost all the hard sections. Most in the 4runner and some on the adventure bike. By far the best "wheeling" action is around the Slade KY/Red River Gorges area sharing some trail with Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway. But whatever section anyone's interested in I can attempt to recall my advice on scenery/camping/distance per day etc. Latest file should always be downloaded right before heading out from where Jeff has the file hosted at http://annessky.net/kat/

Haha I've never heard of babyheads before but yeah kinda like that, lower and smoother than the pictures google shows up on a quick search. More like really rough cobblestone road with some puddles.

Alright folks, let's keep the momentum going. Seems like the last weekend of January may work, so 1/24-27/19 on the KAT??? Maybe meeting in Clay City or Slade and head east?

Slight setbacks on the 4runner from our big 3 week trip. Was able to make it home but still having an intermittent no crank no start issue, most likely due to a wet starter solenoid (starter is in the V under the intake manifold...) So I'll be working on cleaning that thing back up for another trip and hopefully ready to go by end of this month!

Dude, send me a text or DM on IG. What did you get? Nick’s been wanting to get out to the KAT and based on my situation, I could use some dirt therapy also.

I ended up striking a deal with Eric on the white DC limited I was asking you about. I guess he knows you from selling some parts. Nick for sure got bit by the camping/wheeling bug! His trucks looking nice! We've got a couple of scheduled weekends ahead of us but truck should be ready to roll when we have a free one. I'll hit you guys up on IG to plan something, maybe a bit more tame for my first time out in a full size :bikewhoops:

We’re down for a trip soon. Been in Ohio for a year now and have managed to get out for one weekend locally, and a week back in AZ.

if you’re doing the IG planning thing instead of the forum, I’m __kevink__

    Woohoo!

Hey Kevin! I think you responded on a facebook group about 37s and gearing questions I had. I'll rope you in the IG group too. I like to start or end somewhere around Slade KY as a general reference point but the KAT is a huge loop with lots of other offshoots to explore and could spend weeks there.
