I just picked up my 2019 Tundra on December 5th. I have about 1,200 miles on it now and while driving I have noticed that when I am cruising at about 40 mph or so and I gently hit the brake, the engine revs up and the transmission shifts into a lower gear. It seems to happen more often when I am going downhill, but I have noticed it on level ground as well. It just feels like it's engine-braking when I just barely tap the brakes to reduce my speed...but it really throttles down. My old '98 Tahoe would only shift down if I really applied the brakes and wanted to significantly reduce my speed. Is this normal for the Tundras?

Seems like I’ve caught my ‘18 doing this, down shifting and slowing me down rather than letting me cruise down a hill... which then leads to me having to hit the gas to speed back up

Following. I've noticed this in my 2019. Curious is the seasoned owners can verify if this is normal or an issue.

Exactly! I have to do the same thing and it's more than a little annoying, but would like to know if it's normal or if I should have it looked at.

My '18 does it. I'm actually very happy with the pattern of when the engine braking kicks in. I think it's very effective, doesn't kick in at the wrong time, etc..

The Tundra does not downshift, however I almost never hit the brakes to cancel cruise, I pull the little toggle to me and the truck just coast just as smooth as can be. I will be trying the brake pedal tomorrow while out and about. Carry on and enjoy the evening and GO COWBOYS!!

Maybe disconnect the battery with the headlights on to denergize all power from the computer. Plug the Battery back up after about 30 min and see if it will correct itself. But that’s normal in most cases.

Thanks for the replies folks...getting used to this more now, but still find it annoying at times.

I have noticed though that it seems like the Tundra just can't find the right gear...it's always wanting to shift around searching. I'm hating that more than the downshifting when I tap the brakes!

Welcome to the modern era. You think the tundra is bad? You should drive any newer 8 speed rig.

I bought an 014 9 months ago and noticed the issue right away. As you might expect, the dealer was clueless other than to say it was normal. I don't necessarily object to the down shifting but it does not seem consistent. Sometimes it occurs "automatically" and other times when I lightly tap the brake. I'd just like to be able to depend on it or be able to control it myself - don't appreciate surprises. I bet there are plenty of Toyota engineers watching these forums and getting a good laugh out of our comments. It would be great if one of them would give a simple tutorial on how the system works and how we might more effectively interface with it.

Mine does the same thing too.If you don't like it or want it to do that then switch to S and up shift it to 6th gear and that down hill brake will not engage. Just a FYI. And you can leave it in S (shift mode) it will shift normally.

Pretty sure I've had mine downshift while in S. Pretty rare that I use S, just was on a trip to the Smokeys a couple weeks ago and used it a lot coming down mountains.

My 13 crewmax does it also The way I have found to stop that is to shift into "manual"shift and shift into 6th gear.it will bypass the down shift.I have tried it many times and it works every time!

    Yep, same.

But I must say, in general I've been impressed with the downshifting trend of my Tundra. I usually find it downshifts at the appropriate times when I would want it to. In the mountains, it was a different story as I'd be coasting down windy roads for over half an hour.

My 2015 Tacoma on the other hand, it never downshifted how I wanted it to. I used to manually downshift it a lot more. It was the first automatic transmission I ever owned, and it would drive me nuts sometimes. When I wanted it to downshift, it wouldn't. Other times I'd want to coast down a hill and gain momentum but it would decide to downshift and hold me back.

I live in a mountain area also ,and the down shift has saved me a lot of brake wear.Plus the dual exhaust has a nice rumble when it down shifts!!
