Hello. I live in Kansas City, Missouri... yes.. KC is in MISSOURI. I am planning to buy a Toyota Truck. Even though we only need 4 Wheel drive for normal street driving about 4 days a year, just want a 4X4. Thought I wanted a Tacoma because they are smaller, better gas and fit in my garage, and I THOUGHT... cheaper. I am finding however, that the used Tundra 4x4 I have found are less expensive than the Tacoma (when mileage and age are similar). Is this just a unique experience of mine, or is that usually true in general? If it is the case that Tundra's are less expensive, why is that? I am comparing regular cabs and access cabs in the 2004-2012 models... I don't want a crew cab. Thanks for any input.

    Welcome from Texas!

There are premiums in many areas for the Tacoma. Many think more practical and better fuel mileage than Tundra.

Much more truck with Tundra for the money.

I just picked up a 1st gen Tundra to supplement my 1st gen Tacoma. I was surprised at the # of affordable Tundrii sitting on a new frame. I had a much harder time finding Tacoma options. Both my trucks are in similar condition, 1 year difference in age, 1,000 mile difference on the clock, and I suspect I could get near double the money for the Tacoma that I just paid for the Tundra. Not quite sure why that is. Perhaps the Tundra's have been worked harder & the Tacoma's were used more as a pampered toy & they are priced to reflect that?

I will point out to you; the width, weight, length difference makes for a very different driving experience.
Sometimes I want a bouncy jouncy ride, sometimes I want a 'heavy, surefooted, solid' ride - so I have both trucks now.

    Welcome & good luck hunting.

That choice is a first world problem! Awesome rigs but so much more value out of the Tundra

Nobody has answered your question so I will give you my opinion: Tacoma's have a better resale, they are more reliable, Tacoma's are superior off road compared to Tundra, Toyota puts more thought into Taco's they change them up and they have more features than a Tundra.

I'll chime in w my thoughts on Tacoma vs Tundra. I drove an 09 2nd gen Tacoma for 10 yrs and 180,000 miles. Decided to trade for a 2019 Taco TRD Off Road Auto. Long story short, traded Taco for a Tundra TRD OR SR5 double cab. Now...I loved my 09. So thought I would love a 19 Taco even more....wrong. Hated it...unless ur looking at a 6 spd manual, I would suggest the Tundra. The auto tranny in Tacoma was so frustrating...constant hunting...smaller interior than 2nd gen...and I found the steerng was intolerable..very "spongy" and constantly had to compensate while driving. I just couldnt believe how unhappy I was driving it. I do about 3000 miles a month..mostly hiway...and I never got better than 12 l/100 kms (19.6 US mpg). My 18 Tundra is giving me around the same. On a 45 min drive home last night, I got 11.7 l/100 kms (20.10 US mpg). Now that was a back road, going around 80 kms/ hr, so approx 50 mph...but still very impressive. Point is, Tundra is giving me around the same fuel eco as my Tacoma...even at 60 -65 mph hiway on cruise.

So much more room inside...such a better ride...power on demand...safer (sitting up higher), better components....just a nicer truck.

Dont get me wrong..the Taco is the best small truck out there imo. Best resale..best looking and some sweet tech. But that "tech" was something I did not need nor appreciate personally. And still do not like some of it in the Tundra. Like when the slightest bit of slushy snow/ice cover the emblem on the grill, and shut down the TSS. PITA to stop, get out and scrape emblem clear. But I do love the radar cruise..huge heater knobs...heated mirrors and seats..power rear slider and the basic 10+ yr old tech that many gripe about.

I have never been more satisfied as a driver with any vehicle Ive owned. I will prob never own another Tacoma again.

As far as hauling/towing, I have an overdeck Triton trailer (12 x 6.8") 500 lbs., and only haul two snowmobiles or one sxs at a time. Also a dirtbike and my Ultra Classic a few times. The Taco will do that job with no problems..but the hunting tranny drove me NUTS!!! The Tundra, however will make it feel like there is nothing back there. I now have the option to get a nice enclosed trailer (7.5 x 20 v nose), that was not an option with the Tacoma.

Either way...both great trucks for what they...but like one member said, you'll never be upset you drive a Tundra..but will prob always wonder if you get the Taco.

Good luck budz and enjoy your journey.

In addition to the bad tranny, I also heard about some issues (kinks and problems) with the new generation Tacoma from various posts and stories (I know, hearsay, but still nonetheless). Also, for what it is worth, I think consumer reports is fairly hard on the new gen Tacoma. Maybe go with the older generation Tacoma?
