No, you do NOT want a locked rear in the snow. unless you like going sideways.

For some reason Toyota only puts the leather steering wheel on the Limited trim and up. The rest get that toy plastic wheel. But basically you can upgrade that and everything else besides dual climate and parking sensors (I'm not 100% sure on SR5 it having sensors).

OP - there’s been a few complaints from owners about the new Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) functionality. If you think the TSS isn’t useful and would be a source of irritation, you should buy a used Limited to avoid the TSS (2018 and newer I believe).

I think on the Tundra SR5 u can have the dual climate control, sunroof and power down rear window. I may be wrong my 2011 CM Rock Warrior has those options and back up camera tow package with LSD also.

Let’s me chime in as well. I agreed with all the comments above. IMO just save up and get what you want and you’ll be much happier. Although mine is just SR5 model and it’s my first truck. I love every bit of it. From the drive, cargo room, safety and etc... good luck man!

@Jaybird79 I am buying a 2016 or 2017 this year...mainly to stay away from the TSS. You can find really good deals online like auto trader. Just search for ones you want i.e. color, low miles, features, leather...etc..

I agree with TOYOTRD8 save up for what you really want and you will be much happier than settling for something cause you will always say I wish I had that on mine. With that said I bought mine new in 2011 late 2011 with 9 miles on it and it was over 40 k then thank god it’s been paid for, almost 3 years now. You can also buy a lightly used Tundra there are good deals out there expecially from owners that want to trade up to newer.

We have 2 Toyotas. Tundra and a Highlander and 2 Nissans a Frontier and an Xterra.

The Toyotas are for me and my wife.
    They are dependable
Have better resale. A huge plus in my book.
I liked the ride better in my Tundra compared to the Titian I test drove. Also, I liked the look of the Tundra better.

The Nissans are for the kids.
They are dependable. My daughters Xterra hit 200000 miles last year with just regular maintenance.
Cheaper good choice for kids first vehicle. The Xterra got one through high school and college and I expect the Frontier will do the same.

I appreciate it. The less safety/electronic junk the better. I have a Subaru Outback now which is loaded w/ so much electronic crap it's a nui
Cool! I was thinking the same thing. I don't want any more safety features. I have a billion of them on my now Subaru Outback and they are a big headache.

I think '16 to '17 is best, because in '16 they went with the bigger 38 gallon gas tank. I'm thinking either a used Limited with TRD Package, navigation, side steps, and a TRD exhaust on it's already... if I'm lucky. Will not purchase till the end of the year however.

The only thing is I REALLY like the '18+ TRD Sport. That with the SR5 upgrade package would be a nice truck. I heard that thing handles fairly well with those sway bars. I love the fake hood scoop, wheels, and color matched bumper. LEDs are a nice touch too. I haven't test driven a TRD Sport yet though. Only a 1794 w/ TRD Off-Road package.

Totally agree. Which is why I am saving for a Platinum in the fastest color humanly possible. Super White!

@Jaybird79 I have to chime in as I am someone who has had a 2010 Tundra at one point, then a 2017 Titan, then a 2018 Tundra. I recently went to fully loaded 17 Titan Pro-4X September of 2017 and got back into a 2018 Tundra TRD 4x4 Off-Road July of 2018 and could not be happier. I basically had a Tundra back in the day and got rid of it due to a situation at that moment. A few years pass and I am recently able to get back into a truck. I made the jump to Nissan and between both the service and the product will never go back with them and found my forever truck. The 17 Pro4x had lots more bells and whistles than my 18 Tundra but I was always arguing with the dealer/service department on things that were messing up. I had transmission issues, dual climate control issues, the truck made noises inside as if it were 10yrs old, etc. I know its a truck and it will make noises but not brand new which it was. I had the Titan for 10 months and it was a headache the entire time. When the time came where I was frustrated and was going to trade it in, I went with the Tundra because I knew although not flashy, it would work when I need it to. I remembered my 2010 hardly ever having issues. I know any vehicle can have issues, but the customer following and reliability Tundras have speaks for itself. I don't mean to sway you by all means because I know situations are different, but If I can help a fellow forum member with my mistake, by all means i'll do it.

Yep understand what you are saying. I am going to get the Platinum like previously stated and I am going to buy the matching door handles, mirror, etc... from roman or sparks parts and do it myself. I also plan on a change in suspension which is why I am going that route of 16 or 17. Don't have to worry about TSS.

PLUS imo the trd pro grill from 2017 looks the best!

The Nissan Cummins diesel doesn't impress. If people know how unreliable diesel's were anymore for the most part they wouldn't be so quick to want them. I'm in the commercial truck industry and EVERYONE (Pete, Kenworth, Freightliner, Intl, Volvo, Mack, etc) is having problems with the SCR systems, EGR coolers, etc. Many government fleets are going back to gas from diesel not only from the problems but from the cost of running the trucks. A set of injectors is roughly $2100 and a turbo is upwards of $4-5k on the big trucks. Not quite as expensive for the smaller trucks but you can replace entire gas engines for those costs.

I read a long term review on the Nissan with Cummins where Car & Driver ran it around 40k and they had to replace several injectors, the EGR valve, and some other stuff. It went into the shop multiple times and got 1mpg better than the Tundra on the 75mph test. Not impressive. And they said it was ridiculously slow.

    No thanks.

Wow I thought diesels were a little more reliable than that? Guess not thanks for the update maybe that’s why Toyota is not in the diesel game.

My brother bought a diesel in 2011 because he hauls for work. He bought the Factory Extended Warranty for 10 years because he had heard so many horror stories with diesels.

Wait till the 4th Gen Tundra comes out in 2021. In the meantime get ya a TRD Prius. The money you will save in gas will allow you to get any trim you want:D

I was in same boat , either tundra or titan. Talked to few folks who owned titan, their response was not as inspiring as tundra owners. Decided to go with Tundra.

First post for me, I landed here because I'm in the same boat as you more or less.

Man, it is hard to pick a new truck right now. I'm coming from a 2004 Silverado Z71- no major issues with it but it is starting to nickle and dime me to death. Been kinda waiting for a few years for the Tundra redesign but I didn't want to spend any more money on my current truck so here I am.
I have gone back and forth looking at trucks for months, and it really came down to Tundra and Silverado Trail Boss with the Titan a distant third. The only reason the Tundra didn't win going away is I had trouble with the idea of paying a lot of money for what is essentially a brand new 10 year old truck. But I just don't trust any of the other brands and do not want cylinder deactivation, auto start/stop, etc.

So I will be joining the Tundra club soon, now I'm just going round and round trying to decide on trim and options!

It all depends on the style of tundra and what u use it for, I went in on my gen 2 thinking I wanted leather and more of a fancy truck but after looking at my job, kids , and other factors I chose the CM Rock Warrior and as far as options I have everything I want except like some tech options but very happy with my tundra and it’s waiting to go back to work so I can start some upgrades like a 2.5 “ lift new tires wheels and fender flares .

And as far as the new TRD Prius looks great and a hell of a lot easier and faster to wash than my big ole tundra that takes a ladder and about 3 hrs to wash and dry... not complaining at all except when wife misses a spot.

Titan looks ugly to me. The diesel seems to fall below expectations performance-wise based on the reviews I've seen. I do like some of the tech they offer. Unfortunately I think as far as 1/2 ton options that are out there, the Titan would be down at the bottom with Dodge. Dodge with the edge on looks/style IMO. Test drive them all and see what you like best. I think the Tundras are hard to beat in the reliability department. New MSRP seem to be overpriced in the market considering the competition BUT that's where most dealers I've seen are marking them down to negotiate and move units. Tundra is a slow seller so you should be able to strike a good bargain.

That is what I did. A Titan would not even make a pimple on the rear end of a Tundra.

I had the same choice in October of last year.

I was weighing the TRD 4x4 Sport CM and the Pro-4X. After driving both and weighing everything the quality of the Toyota is what got me swayed. I have owned several of both and Nissan just does not have the upper hand (which is why all the bells, whistles and extras for so little $$$).

I am completely happy with my purchase on my Tundra and do not regret walking from the Pro-4X.

    Good Luck

I believe in getting the lowest/basic model with the options that I must have. If I could have gotten mine with NO stereo system and NO wheels I would have. I know the stereo is going to be upgraded soon after purchase and rims/tires once the truck developed it's personality. One thing I never worry about and usually don't figure in the equation is resale value. Last truck I had was 16 years old, wife car was 11, Harley was 13 years old and my Porsche is 20 years old. I keep my vehicles a long time and spend WAY to much money on making them mine. One downside of high resale value is the dealer where I bought mine calls every month or so trying to buy it back and put me in a NEW truck. Last time he called, told him I would only sell it when Toyota released a diesel Tundra.
