I've looked online for answers but found nothing worth a crap. My vet clinic is closed till Wednesday and I can't take him in till Friday because of work. When we picked him up from the vet they gave us pain pills with no instructions or what to expect.

My dog had his lower left canine tooth pulled Friday. Picture below for reference, not a picture of my dog. He's been eating soft food pretty good and doesn't drink much water. If he accidentally bumps it he freaks out and won't eat anything or drink anything. I'm worried that something is wrong. Since the vet is closed until Wednesday we have to wait it out but I would be willing to have him looked at through an emergency clinic. Very expensive for the emergency place.

Does anyone know if this is normal or what I should do?

Turkey baster for water and babyfood, mash up the pills to powder if it wont take them whole, not sure about the tooth but if the pain meds arent working and that clinic failed to inform, Emergency clinic might be your answer, especially if the first clinic effed up the extraction. Infection will be very red, pink is good, pus is bad, be careful dogs in pain bite out of fear, you can lose fingers.

Thanks for your input. When my wife gets home here soon we'll check where the tooth was extraced and see what it looks like. He ate his breakfast fine and drank a bunch of water an hour ago. He acted pretty normal when he went to wake the kids up. Still not himself though.

Thanks! He's a big part of our family. He definitely doesn't deserve this. And yes, tooth pain is the worst.

Wish I knew more, to help. I did a year with my wife at a clinic, she had 30 years experience so I picked up so much, sat in a lot of surgeries etc. Got two pups myself to keep me fresh, good luck and hope your pup gets better soon!

My little turd eater, not Sarge had some teeth extracted a while ago. The pain meds made him act weird, kind of scared us. I think it was 2 times a day. He was back to normal in about 3 days.

Lower canine extractions are very tough. I’m a dentist and have done root canal treatment on a few dogs for a local vet because the outcome of the extraction can lead to fracture of the lower jaw. Sounds like the pain isn’t be managed well right now. I would hope that your vet is at least available to take a phone call or have another vet on call to do so, especially after having surgery done right before the holiday weekend. If not, consider taking to an urgent care vet before tomorrow, if possible.

If you have it, our dogs are typically prescribed Tramadol for pain. I take it for chronic lower back pain, so we have it available if needed.

I showed this to my girlfriend who is a vet tech.
She said that sounds normal, and your dog is still probably just sore/uncomfortable from the surgery.

Keep an eye on him, as long as he eventually eats/drinks water, and goes to the bathroom everything is okay.

If things change or you see some sign of infection your best bet is going to be the emergency clinic.
If you’re still worried it might not be a bad idea to look into an exam for him at the emergency clinic.

Not a vet or dentist (I do anesthesia), but yes if for some reason someone in your house has a scrip for Tramadol you can safely give that, 1mg/lb is a conservative dose. Anything you might have that’s over the counter like nsaids or Tylenol definitely not safe.

He was great yesterday morning, eating and drinking and acting pretty good. His breath is pretty nasty so we are taking him in this afternoon to the vet. We tried looking in his mouth the last few days and it's hard to see anything because of the location. But from what we could see there wasn't any puss or anything nasty. I'm hoping the breath is from eating wet dog food and sleeping more than normal and maybe some blood built up on his teeth from the surgery.

Went to the vet. His sutures have come open a little. He was also running a fever. Doing antibiotics now and they gave him fluids under his skin. He should be good here in a few days. Didn't even charge us for the visit, just for the antibiotics.

    Will do. Thanks!

I'll see how he's doing when I get off work in 4 hours. He seemed good this morning minus him being loopy because of pain meds.
