Interesting. Makes it sound like they haven’t put much effort into making the Tundra better. The ugly step child to the Tacoma. Hopefully they do step up and come up with a great redesign.

Interesting but somewhat confusing article. The gist I got is that their San Antonio plant is at max capacity producing more Tacos than Tundras. Apparently, they plan to free up space in San Antonio to build more Tacos at a new plant in Mexico, thereby increasing Tundra output from San Antonio?

Interesting choice of words when they say “that Tundra is in the latter stages of its life cycle.” I think most of us know and understand that, but still no word as to when or what’s in the works, which is not surprising. Big question is whether it’s going to be an all new re-design and platform, or just more exterior cosmetic changes with some minor upgrades? My guess is the former if it truly is in its “latter stages of its life cycle.”

    Quote from article...

“But I will say, it will always come down to what are the consumers and dealers asking us for, and that’s what we will respond to.”

I doubt that we will see a Crewmax with a 6.6 ft bed, or e-lockers, or a long list of options for true custom builds. Oh, and almost forgot, a V8 without the phony hood scoop.

Ok, so as a supply chain geek, I look at this article (very interesting, btw) and two things come to mind:
    1. Toyota is saying that Tundra sales are currently constrained by manufacturing capacity at the San Antonio plant. They are addressing that constraint by moving more Taco volume to Mexico.
    2. Toyota is assuming that, once the Taco volume is moved, Tundra volume will be constrained only by the market, meaning how many sales they can generate. They plan to address this second constraint with a new product.

I’m not sure I agree with the first point, in that it kind of implies that more sales could have been generated had more manufacturing capacity been available. Maybe I’m missing something...

IOM I think the tundra has been more popular than Toyota thought it would be. Would explain partially why not much has been done with the platform esp since the second gen came on scene. I could be way off base tho.

I woke up angry as hell last night from a dream where Toyota announced a Tacoma redesign and said nothing on the Tundra.
Im wondering if part of what they are saying in the article of moving Tacoma out, is so they have room to re-tool for the next gen Tundra.

Publicly acknowledging the Tundra's strong market demand supports more capacity (marketshare they are missing) as well as a redesign.

    Finally...

They need to go for the jugular and go for a 100% EV Tundra option.
