I bought a grill on eBay with the 3 amber LEDs (listed for $132, offered $100, they countered with $98 :notsure:, go figure). I'm trying to decide if I want them on all the time, or just when the parking/head lights are on. Since the truck already had the orange daylight running lights on all the time, I think the grill LEDs would look good on all the time as well, but not completely sold on it. I need some advice!

Also, currently they are wired into the side amber parking lights, where could I easily wire them for always on when the key is on?

Under the hood, in the fuse box, there's a fuse you can use and use a fuse tap, it'll be on when you turn your key on. Got a Ebay link? I need a new one. I tapped mine under the dash fuse box to parking lights.

    HERE

Thanks for the advice on where to hook up. It's a dark grey, not black, and comes complete with the surround. I didn't like how the dark grey butted up to the black bumper, so I removed the insert and kept the chrome surround.

After I crunched my oem grill on a deer, I got this grill and hooked it up exactly as Berdine says. Painted it and the surround to match. Happy with it.

Are fuse taps safe? From what I've read, they could be a fire hazard. I don't want to take any chances, especially if it'll void my warranty.

Never heard of a problem with an Add-a-fuse kit. They are, errrr, fused, so you’d have to go out of your way to create a fire hazard. Besides, we’re talking about very low current. I can’t imagine a problem or warranty issue.

I’ll take a picture tomorrow. Any fuse that is keyed off ignition will work though. Just poke around with multimeter. Hardest part is running wire through the loom into the box.

What I read was that adding current to a fuse rated for what's it's there for could cause issues, and if you put in a bigger fuse it could cause the existing wiring to overheat since it's likely not rated for as high as the new fuse. I figured since the lights are LED that the added current would be negligible, but just want to be sure. Thanks for all the info.

Awesome, thanks! Does this fit well without modifications to the box? i.e. does the adapter sit too high for the box to close properly? And this is probably a dumb question, but where is the fuse box located that this will plug into?

Under the hood, the box will close fine, you'll have to cut away some to route it out. Under the dash, you can't put the cover back on, which is fine it's under the dash away from the elements.

Here ya go. Grab an add-a-fuse kit. Find a keyed ignition source. You can see by my finger where i found one. Run the wire through the loom on the left (the plastic elbow comes out and apart). There's plenty of headroom in the box.

UPDATE: Purchased the recommended add-a-fuse and rewired the LEDs. Was kind of a pain, as I had a mechanic friend wire it to the parking lamp on the headlight originally. I had to remove the headlight to disconnect it (which required removing the grill and the small panel under the headlight). Was pretty worried taking everything off, but got it disconnected and everything reassembled.

Ended up just drilling a hole into the fuse box, just big enough for the wire to fit through snugly, as I didn't want to mess with the existing wiring to try to feed it through an existing access. Only issue I have is the add-a-fuse doesn't fit real snug, so I'm concerned it may jostle out eventually.

Thanks for all the help and advice, it's working just the way I want now, always on with key. Now to find a badge I like to affix to the grill, thinking I like the TForce emblem that's on my wheel center caps.

Quick question do you know what the fuse you tapped controls? I’m thinking about tapping the same fuse.

Just find one that’s switched to your ignition. Beyond that, it probably doesn’t matter. The electrons don’t care.

Thanks for the help everyone I ended up deciding to tap into the headlight fuse so it comes on with my headlights!

Update for anyone that cares, and another question for you electrical experts. I decided the grill was too plain with no emblem, so I ordered a
Toyota Land Cruiser 1985-1987 BJ70 Front Grille TOYOTA Emblem 75311-90K00 off of ebay for $35, then created and cut some chrome vinyl lettering to cover the white letters on it. They don't fit perfect, but I got tired of measuring and re-cutting, and from a distance you can't really notice. It actually fit pretty nice and centered up really well on the grill. I had to drill small holes into the pegs on the outside of it so I could mount it with 3 screws (sandwiched onto the grill using washers in the back).

    grill.jpg
    grill-close.jpg

My question(s) for the electrical experts is this -- The mechanic friend that originally hooked up my led's ran the ground to the negative terminal on my battery. I've read elsewhere that things should be grounded to the frame. Does it need to be on the negative terminal of the battery? Is there risk of this? Would it be better to run it to a bolt on the frame?

Thanks in advance, this forum is awesome and I've already learned a lot from just reading through threads.
