Im a big fan of Vortex's 1x6 Strike Eagle and the Primary Arms 1x8. I love the versatility of these scopes. At 1x its like looking thru a red dot, but you can crank up the magnification if you want to stretch it out a bit.

palmetto.jpg A low powered variable scope like my Leupold 1.5X5 with an illuminated reticle gives you the best of both worlds!

Both, depending on needs. You can certainly use a red dot at 200+ yards, but I think a quality LPVO 1-4 (or 6 or 8) with an illuminated reticle is almost as useful close up and more versatile all around. None of them are cheap though. The cheapest serious use quality red dot is the aimpoint PRO which is like 4x the price of a Sig Romeo or primary arms micro dot. I have two SWFA 1-4’s on rifles and they have been good but for a battle quality LPVO I’d be looking at the SWFA 1-6 or the NF 1-4 or 1-8, which are obviously in another price category. I’d skip anything vortex.
