I’m on day one of three of getting both sides repaired before I get my truck back from the dealership, I have a great relationship with my dealership, so it’s cool if I go back into the shop. The place is huge. It has 40 single work bays all with lifts. I was speaking with my technician (Matt)and another tech (Jeff). I asked how I should drive my truck after the repair. With out hesitation both of them said drive it hard at the same time. I said, consider it done. Then my phone rang and never finished the conversation.

First question, what have others been told on how to drive after the repair or did they not give a recommendation on how you should drive and for how long ?

Second, I’m assuming the reason they said that is because all the moving parts in the engine need to reseat ? I will ask them why the said that on Friday.

I read a lot of the post and didn’t find anything about this, there could be info about this, just didn’t find it.

    Thanks

I just drove mine like I normally do after my seal repair. I don’t think there was any re-seating of moving parts. Just a seal was replaced.

@NjPro did you notice the leak originally or did your tech find it?

Isn’t this the equivalent of what we used to call a valve cover gasket replacement?

Must be nice to have a dealership and techs you can trust. I'm not so sure about the techs at mine. Had a screw in my tire and thought maybe they would just patch the tire while it was being serviced. When I got the truck back they had just swapped out the bad tire with the spare and just never said anything. Now I have a spare tire with a screw in it. Sweet! I would drive it like you stole it and don't look back

Much more in depth. There is still a valve cover gasket between the valve cover and the cam tower. This reseal is between the cam tower and the cylinder head. While this guy does a few things I’d never want done to my engine, this shows the general idea very well.

No. Did you remove the camshaft, timing chain, and ac compressor to replace your valve cover gasket?...
Just drive it. If you want to be particular, change the oil after a bit. From experience(unfortunately), there will be crap in the filter from the repair. Doubt it is necessary, the filter is doing its job, but I have done it after after a few hundred miles for my own peace of mind.

Pretty crazy they didn’t even tell you they swapped out your spare. It does make the whole process a bit easier when you know these guys have my best interests in mind when there wrenching on my truck that I worked my ass of to get. Thanks for advise.

Somebody should explain the concept of a torque wrench to that guy.

And “clean care”. Scotch brite leaves abrasive dust and residue that a small wire brush will not.

I wasn’t kidding about things I wouldn’t want done to my engine.

Wow, that’s really invasive surgery. If I develop the little leakage this causes, I would rather live with the leak than have any mechanic tear down my engine to this degree. Through the years, I would say, probably 60% of damage to my vehicles has been the direct result of bad work from mechanics (both what was done and what was not done). Great video! Thanks for posting.

Of course! Plus air up the tires.
I have never had this done. Just asking a simple question.

Well that little leak just gets bigger, and costs 4K dollars to repair. If I did not have a warranty would definitely ride it out, but I do not suggest anyone under warranty live with this leak. It’s not flying rockets, and if by chance they screw it up your still good, so what’s to loose(other than 4K eventually).

Wow, didn't realize that the cam housing was actually removable. I guess there's two places it can leak then. What a giant PITA. No wonder dealerships don't want to futz with it.

At dealership and I followed up with tech about driving after fix, when they said drive it hard, it was for the transmission so it can relearn my driving habits.
