Thanks for the info! Anything is appreciated at this point.

Sounds like an overall awesome place to live and visit with the kids so I am sure we will have fun exploring. Los Angeles starts to wear on you after 7+ years and being semi land locked to what is in driving distance. Great weather, beach etc. but since my wife and I grew up in different CA cities we hiked and camped a lot growing up, just trying to get back to nature a little more. With this new possible position opening up it will give our family a great opportunity to stretch our legs and wander more. Thanks again.

I think I saw that @FlashCulprit lives near SLC...

My dad used to live in Torrance many moons ago. Always thought I wanted to move to southern cal when I was younger. Then I got a taste of the small town life. Now I can't even drive into Denver without getting anxiety. Utah definitely has a different culture to it, but it's a great place to live/visit.

Lol it was a shit show. Between all of us we had it pretty much worked out but no one could front the deposit for the permits due to it being so close in timing. We got to the point where we figured it was best to push it a year and here we are. I'm actually getting calls from the Moab board pretty regularly. And the blm sends me emails. I should probably get my shit together if we want to do something like that. Haha

Timing in life never works the way you want it. :bananadead:

LoL yeah, it takes a shitload of time to put it all together, and since pretty much everyone is doing it on their own time, getting something done that should take 2 hours ends up taking three weeks. But it's fun as hell, so we do it anyway!

I'll shoot you a PM to not hijack this thread. But if anyone else lives in the Utah area close to SLC I would love to chat your ear off about stuff.

I wanted to get down there sometime this year, but not sure when I'll have the time. I have fond memories of tearing off one of my steps on the way to Toroweap many moons ago.

Hey Shane will let you know if we decide on North rim. Just gauging interest right now but it's a long drive home for the other two. We were planning northern AZ but not sure north or south of the canyon.

Hey Utah guys, have a tire question for you.

I'm on the east coast and will be road tripping to Utah to spend 2 weeks there. My 4x4 Tundra is stock as far as off road mods go. I do have some basic recover gear.

My plan is to camp on blm lands near each of the National parks. I've done a lot of research for locations and roads and started getting nervous about my stock Michelins (trd off road package). They have 8k miles on them.

Some of the camping areas I've found are Smithsonian Butte road neat Zion and Gemini Bridges in Moab, for example. Some of the reviews are mixed regarding type of road and vehicle needed, but I know conditions change as well.

So, I'm considering last minute to get some 275 70 AT tires put on. But I also don't like to go changing a working system before a big road trip (maybe they mess up my alignment or I get a collapsed belt)

Do you guys have any helpful feedback on those roads listed and in general, if I just want to get to a camp site on blm land?

275 sound be perfect. I'm rockin at2s and the only place they struggle is powdery snow. My favorites are still duratracs... My Tacoma did 286k on two sets of them and went through most of South Utah with no issues on the red rocks or just trail running. I helped @KevinK do some planning early last year but I'm sure he still has a lot of route info and camp stuff he can share. I recommend having at least a small lift and back up parts but you probably assumed that already. If you got a locker that's awesome. If not it's a little rough but you'll survive it will just take a little longer.

Thanks! No lift yet, unfortunately. I was more worried about the durability of my stock P rated tires than traction, but also don't want to get stuck that I can't get out of with the basic gear I'll have.

I'll hit up KevinK to see if he'd like to give me some other ideas where to camp!

I’ve driven a few easy trails with the stock Michelins when I lived in moab (Hurrah Pass and Chicken Corners, Schaefer Trail). If you air down a bit and take it slow, Gemini Bridges Road shouldn’t be a problem, assuming I’m thinking of the same road as you. I like going down Kane Creek road toward the Ledges campgrounds. I think there at least 3-4 Ledges campgrounds. They are developed sites but some of them have good privacy if that’s a concern.

Good to know! From what I've read, even if on BLM land I still leave to use campsites that are marked, but definitely hoping for seclusion.

My truck will be loaded down pretty good. Any suggestions what psi to run when on the trails?

Yea, I think with the amount of people they get there they have to keep people in marked sites even on BLM land. I’m sure if you get far enough from Moab there’ll be some opportunities for some real dispersed camping. I like the Needles area down by Monticello. I’m no expert, but I think if you were somewhere between 25-30 psi (I’m usually at 40+ on pavement) that would give you a better ride on some of the rockier stuff and still let you carry some weight.

Sounds good. I'm going to each of the 5 parks so I won't be in the more crowded moab area the whole time.

I originally reached out back in March of this year in regards to possibly moving out to Utah. It looks like it is going to happen sometime in Q1 of 2019. That means snow. What do you guys have/use in preparation for your trucks, house, general life for the winter time? For reference, we would be moving from sunny CA (Los Angeles). Any info is appreciated so just start tossing it out. Snow blower, shovel, jacket(s), 6 in lift (say that so the wife buys into it), snowboard gear etc. Ha, I feel like we would be moving to the arctic Tundra with all these questions so I apologize for my lack of knowledge. Thanks!

Well this post is going to be riveting. Any info is much appreciated. The mrs. and I will be moving to Utah, boom! She got offered a position there starting early February. If you can't tell from my profile picture, we live in CA. We have not driven in snow very often and when we do it has been in the back ofcars with family or friends so we are fairly clueless. I have a 4x4 SR5 CM and she has a Subaru Outback with AWD. We are planning on living 20 miles south of SLC near the Holladay/Cottonwood Heights area(still figuring this out). My questions(s) is do we need snow tires? If so, what are some good ones that can be an A/T tire for my truck as well as her Subaru? We plan on going to the slopes and will definitely invest in chains. Anyone have advise on those as well? haha. Overall, are snow tires really needed or would chains suffice? When summer rolls around will we need to get the snow tires taken off or should some A/T tires suffice? I will pose the questions for hiking, best slopes and mountain biking later down the road, just need to worry about getting there and driving conditions first. Thanks for any info passed this way!

Wayy south of SLC - Too cold up there for me and prefer the desert in Southern Utah area.
My son lives and goes to school up there and his truck just has AT tires. He works at one of the ski resorts and normally takes the shuttle if he can up the canyon.
