Went from a 285 to a 275. Did I make a bad decision?

So Ive been running 285/65/18 wildpeaks on stock rims for about 1500 miles now.

I just got my method 309’s this week and decided to try a little taller tire that weighed less, so I went with an open country at2 in 275/70/18.

My biggest decision maker was trying to gain or maintain
My less than stellar fuel economy by shedding 14 lbs per tire. (Not sure what the wheel weight difference is)
I was also quite curious to see how the 2 tires compared to one Another.

My concern now is because the method is a much wider wheel and by going to a narrower tire, I’m now stretching the tire a little more than I’d like.

I’m not in love with the look compared to the old setup currently.

I’m honestly just seeking opinions on what you guys think about the look of this setup.

    Fire away.

It's hard to tell without seeing a pic from straight on or straight behind, but I would think a skinnier tire like the 275 might look a little "off" with a lower offset rim sticking out like that. The more aggressive Toyos might make up for it, though. :notsure:

Ultimately only you can be the judge! Congrats on the new wheels either way.

I think I liked my falkens more than I realized, but my god they are heavy compared To these. :eek2:

Were they good tires? I'm really considering those for my next set, but even the next size up from stock in 275s or 285s are nearly 18lbs heavier per tire...

I have to admit, I’m not a fan of the stretched tire look. Those are cutting it close. But I only noticed because I was looking for it

Post a few more pics of the truck, from further away so we can see the whole thing. Plenty of people run that type of setup, but ultimately depends what you like.

If you look up the specs for the 275/70-18, you will see that they do not recommend mounting them on a rim wider then 8.5" (8.0 is recommended) and I'm assuming those are 9" wide rims? So from that perspective... yes, you messed up but I'm not sure if it's a big enough issue to worry about or not? Looks wise, yeah its not the greatest look.

I think you made a good choice, the 275/70 looks better inside the wheel well. It feels it out more being it’s a bit taller. The width difference is minimal. Enjoy it and don’t look back.

I think it looks just fine. The majority of us would prefer a wider tire just because we are truck enthusiasts and most of us like wider tires. But, if there is nothing to compare it against, 99% of the people on the street are not going to think "dang, look at those skinny tires" . 275 is still a wide tire compare to most cars on the road, and they don't look out of place if you don't look for it or do a side by side comparison.

This was a big reason that I made sure to stick with an 8.5" wide wheel instead of going up to a 9" or 9.5". I can run a narrower/taller tire without stretching it. Many tire manufacturers have a maximum rim width as well; for design, load and warranty reasons.

IMHO a narrower/taller tire is the way to go. Fills the wheel well and looks good from a side profile, all while reducing weight and attempting to preserve MPG.

I don't think yours look stretched or out of place. I'd like to see a full side profile pic.

I love the falkens, but they are really heavy and the stiff sidewall had me wanting to try something different.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to someone looking.
The biggest complaint I’ve ever found about them was the weight.

I’ll get some better pics this week.

It was dark by the time the truck was done last night.

    I appreciate everyone’s input.

I will say that after driving it a couple times, I fee the road noise is basically identical. The toyos seem to have a higher potched whine on the freeway, but nothing to complain about.

I’d say the most noticeable thing so far is it rides softer.
Those falkens have that super thick sidewalk and you can feel them going over bumps in the road where the toyos absorb the hits a little better.

18x9 rims on 275/70/18 here. No problems whatsoever and love the look. Tons of members here run 9” wide rims on 275/70 tires without issue.

Had cooper st Maxx and now Falken Wildpeak at3w. Both great tires.

I will say that it looks better in these pics then the original ones you posted and I absolutely get the weight/gas mileage/ride quality concerns.

Are you completely stock suspension wise?

No. I have a prototype Falcon suspension with CB+1 shackles.
So it’s about 2.5” in the front and 5/8” in the rear.

    Graphite.
I feel they suit the cement color better than black.

I bought an extra set of beadlock ring bolts as well.
I may swap them out to black or paint them graphite as well.
