Actually yes. Not for me but the Sheriff on site was able to arrange for the big f**king Charolais I took out to be donated. He had to "finish" one off. Totally sucked.

Nooope. I asked too. Even knew these people. They were out a couple Grand. We don't speak or even make eye contact anymore

Now I'm being serious, here if you hit a cow and it's clearly marked as open range , you're responsible for paying the owner of said cow market for it.

Isn't thats what insurance is for? property damage? :D its a waste anyways once it's dead why not put it to good use.

Oh besides it depends on the type of cow, here in Boring, Oregon, we can go and get a black angus cow for around 900 bucks at a slater farm. Older cows can fetch a little more but that's black angus, not just some milk cow.

I'm sure they took it and ate it man lol. That was the second call I made after it happened. They had it loaded up and told me to fuck off right about the time the patrolman showed up.

Theoretically. The highway department should have paid for both truck and cow. It's a fence out state. So you don't want cows on the highway you fence them out. Well, not all state employees are hard working honest tundra driving folk so the fence had issues.

What really pissed me off is when the patrolman told me this was the 2nd cow in 12 hours in the same area.

    3 things.

    1. My Jr High football coach hit a cow and somehow it came through the windshield into the cab of his truck. He had a metal rod in his neck after they finish patching him up. (Cancelled practice anytime there was any chance of thunderstorms after that.)

    2. When I lived in Newfoundland the big issue was moose. Growing up in Texas I didn't realize that moose were like cows on stilts.

When you hit one it just knocks their legs out from under them and the body comes through the windshield almost every time.

The semis had huge bumpers with "moose catchers" made of 4-6" pipe. I saw one at a gas stations with fresh moose parts hanging off of it once. The driver said he hit one going 100 kph (62 mph) because it stepped in front of him just as he reached it. What a mess!

    3. A game warden told my brother that pigs are the worst animal to hit because they're heavy and have a much lower center of gravity. The claim is that it usually flips the car when you hit an adult pig. Seems to make sense to me.

    Glad you're okay.

This post is too long already so I'll just say I know exactly what you mean when you say that you don't feel safe in smaller vehicles anymore.

That is another issue all in it's own! I actually have a story about that. Not as exciting but I had one run full-on into the side of my work truck years ago. I was parked looking at a herd of elk. That's about it lol. They have horrible vision. Yes,I wouldn't want to hit one. Just the same as I hope I never run across a a horse or now pigs

This is why we "need" giant lightbars. Seeing an animal at night and slowing down well in advance is much better than destroying one in the middle of nowhere and then trying to get duct-tape to hold your buddy's headlight in place until you reach civilization when it's 10°F outside. (True story, mule deer in Eastern Washington)

It is the sound from my accidents that I never forget, reminds me at night. I grew up on farms, and can’t count how many times there where late night encounters, they won’t move. Used to nudge them off the road with my truck.

Just read this entire thread... I am very glad that you were ok, and still drive one of the greatest trucks on the planet.

If I could add anything to what the wise folk who came here before have said....

It does appear that your truck did tragically meat with quite an end.
