I'm about to be coming up to Estes Park from Beaumont, Texas. We'll be stopping in Colorado Springs for the Royal Gorge train ride on the way up. It will end up being about a 2500 mile round trip before it's over...

    Anyway...two questions:

What's the weather been like up there ? Roads pretty decent? Much snow or ice?

Are there any trails open this time of year in the RMNP/Boulder general area?

Anything else you think I may want/need to know. (I know that's a broad statement, but keep it within the scope of road-trips-to-Estes Park-in-a-4WD-vehicle.)

We have been blessed with great weather this December. I'm sure it's been 55f like everyday. Drops to about freezing at night, but nothing major. However, trying to predict the weather in Colorado is a dangerous game. You can have all seasons in one day.we have had very few inches of snow and that only lasted a few hours.

You should also hit up Garden of the God's in Colorado springs. If you're a beer drinker you could do some free beers tours like Coors or New Belgium. Heck, if not just do the free celestial seasonings tea tour.

even trails that are open are not trails you should plan on going alone. open trails still have snow and drifts and such that can get you in a lot of trouble quick. at least toyotas have proven twice to survive the winter snowed in. don't know if inferior vehicles could ;) but it would suck to be without your baby until the snowmelt.

RMNP is mostly closed due to government shutdown. But you will still enjoy Estes park.

Well, on our way back from Colorado, in Amarillo right now, will stay the night in Wichita Falls.

When we got there there hadn’t been that much snow and going was pretty easy, most of the trails were seasonally closed but there were a few that are open year round. I got on the USDA web site and pulled the Boulder and Canyon lake ranger district forestry maps and found all the trails that are supposed to be open year round and found a few.

That said, a front blew through and it snowed for the next 3 days. Even the trails that were open got sketchy and I didn’t want to go down them alone particularly without communication and with my mom and 6 yr old in the truck. That said it wouldn’t be a problem with a partner to wheel with. I think there is enough to keep someone busy for a little while during the winter.
