I have a 2016 Tundra Crewmax SR5 which has a TWR (Tow Weight Rating) of 9400 lbs. I occasionally tow a trailer at that weight. I was looking to upgrade to a 2019 Platinum until I learned that the TWR of the Platinums (4WD with the 38 gallon fuel tanks) are 8800 lb.
None of the dealers I've spoken with nor anyone at Toyota Customer Care can tell me why the 2019's are downrated. The Pros are 9200 lb. My questions are:
What happens if I exceed the TWR of the tow vehicle,
    and,
Does anyone know why Toyota downrated the TWRs on most of the 2019 Tundras?

The extra weight of gas in the larger tank reduces the overall capacities. Extra weight of TSS system likewise. The platinum probably has more equipment, increasing weight and decreases overall capacity.

I think the TSS he was referring to is the new Toyota Safety Sense, the sensors probably add a few lbs. Also the Platinum has fans to vent the seats, a sunroof, motors to power the steering column and passenger seat, etc. It all adds up.

As far as going over the limit, while I do believe the Tundra is overbuilt and maybe even under rated for safety, I prefer to tow at no more than around 80%, it's just more relaxing. If you are going to tow heavy you probably should look at a 3/4 ton.

Thanks for the try but the weight difference in gas tank capacity (38 gal vs: 24.6 gal) is about 75 pounds, and the TSS package is only for show on the SR5. The TSS packages upgrade the wheels to 20", adds AT tires, adds chrome step tubes and adds two 'TSS Off-Road' decals on the back panels - that's it!

The BCW (Base Curb Weight) of the L,P and 1794's are only 40 lb more than the SR5, and there are no differences in the GWVR (Gross Vehicle Weight Ratio) on any of these Crewmax Tundras. Yet the upper end Tundras max tow capacities are 1000 lb less than the SR5.

So, back to my two questions:
What happens if I occasionally exceed the TWR of the tow vehicle,
    and,
Does anyone know why Toyota greatly downrated the towing capacity on the upper end 2019 Tundras?

Yeah, you're right but (sigh) I like the Tundras. I occasionally tow up to 9400 lb which is what my SR5 is rated for. But still, according to the latest 2019 Toyota Tundra Specs, the SR5 is rated to tow 9800 lb. There is no difference between the models GAWR and only 40 lb difference between the high end Tundras and the SR5. The L,P and 1794 models max tow capacity is 8,800 lb.

I'm still learning the intricities of posting here. I tried to edit my earlier reply by copying, deleting and reposting. Oops. I wasn't aware that you had posted on it. I've learned something new.

I bet if you brought a 2016 sr5 crewmax to a weigh station along with a 2019 platinum (both stock) there would be several hundred pounds weight difference. The extra gas, extra sensors and equipment with the tss, extra weight of the leather and other equipment. I’m not sure how it adds up to 600 lbs difference though. That sounds extreme.
