The other day I went out to the garage, all pumped up to rebuild/revalve one of my CO’s and realized that I needed a bench vise. The only table in the garage is a fold down, solid core door the previous owner installed for carpentry work. Yeah, I tried it. It broke rather quickly.

Time to hang my folding welding table that has been sitting for almost a year in the corner of my wife’s side garage.

Plenty of room, and I may start moving more of the welding tools over to this bay for bench welding. Probably put some peg board right above the table.

Let the welding and fab work begin again. I have a V8 to shoehorn in my Jeep soon.

Can you help me with info on those barn doors! (Hardware, and how they were built) That’s exactly what I’m doing (10’Hx12’W opening) and since I took on this project myself I’m lost on a few things lol.

If I would’ve know what the F this took, I’m pretty sure I would’ve never started.
This M Fer is getting the best of me LOL.
Cutting the rafters and installing 22ft up is not fun. My help (framer) ran the ridge line mostly thank God. I was scared to ever loving shit on a ladder with no safety shit 20 feet in the air. Not my bag of chips. (We aren’t using a lift or scaffolding).
Managed to *finally* get the ridgeboards (F me) and rafters in. Nearly impossible with 2 people but we thankfully had 3 today and got er done.
Hopefully we can finish the front and back walls + plywood roof this weekend.
    We’ll see. :fingerscrossed:

Your barn is looking great! For the barn doors you can either construct them on-site with traditional cedar lumber or order some pre built doors from barn pros. If you decide to build the doors yourself. I would make a jig or large table area on some saw horses inside the barn. I typically build my barn doors inside the barn after it’s fully dried in. The materials I use are 1x6 tongue and groove cedar, 1x4 cedar, 1x6 cedar, lots of exterior wood glue, exterior finish nails or screws.
    A2BC8284-07F1-40B5-8461-D6B7D68E3CED.jpg
The interior of the barn you can make it just 1x6 tongue and groove with a simple outside boarder trim or add the cross buck trim.

Make sure you have plenty of blocking on the sides of your header for your barn door track.

I’ve built barns with stick frame trusses similar to what you have shown on your photos. It’s definitely a lot more work and time to do instead of engineered trusses.

Here’s a barn I built with an open ceiling plan. I had my framers leave a open framed area to have the triple engineered header set with a crane. I had scaffolding set under the header to make installing the rafters a lot easier and safer. The crane set the header in place in only 20 min. Versus spending hours with labor and making it a potential safety issue.

    Damn that’s amazing!!!
Yea, I just finally came inside after 13hrs - I’m going to sleep good. LOL

Thanks a ton for the barn door info! That is seriously amazing work you do.
What’s your take on doing rock all the way up to the door edges? Since my barn doors will be closed 95% of the time I wanted the rock on the outside of the barn to match my house. Since it’s only 30ft wide I’d really have to go from corner to door in the front. I was thinking I could build out the inside frame of the door a few inches so the doors clear the rock, and yes - make sure to have a solid larger area up above to hang the door from (with a few inches overhang).

PS - the cheapest engineered trusses were $4,000, and my framer and I knew we could do it a lot cheaper. But yes, lots of extra time, and scary moments not having a crane/scaffolding LOL.

Anytime I'm working long days like that I always sleep good at night.

The engineered trusses will cost more up front but they can save you labor time and sometimes help with additional storage. I like to order attic trusses when the clients needs additional storage or living space. I put down a 3/4” osb subfloor decking for this garage project. Then I installed an aluminum pull down stair case. They had lots of room for storage. The other reason I like engineered trusses is they are typically stronger and less likely to have any deflection.

Are you going to install collar ties on your roof rafters?
    69845CBB-CE8E-49A1-AAA1-8A68A707C1A2.jpg
What kind of roofing are you installing? If your doing shingles I would recommend installing a ridge vent on the ridge of your roof. I would also suggest you install vented soffits on your overhangs. You will want solid soffits on the front and back gable soffits though. By installing vented soffits on the sides and ridge vent on the center ridge it will allow air to vent out of your structure. This is very helpful in the hot summer months. Letting the heat escape from the structure also can prolong the life of your shingles.
    19214470-795A-4DA1-AEB0-C4BEFBD99890.gif

I always try and get my structures dried in ASAP. Then I store materials for my project under the newly covered roof. Are you installing any windows on your project?

Your structure looks like it’s 40’ deep if your trusses are 2’ on center. How big is your building footprint?

I worked for a truss company back in the day and attic trusses were a PITA. When we finished each truss they had to be lifted out of the jig table and carried outside to be stacked. So whoever was working at the ridge got the shit end of the stick. Your typical house truss is heavy, but some of the attic trusses with 2x6 top chords and a 2x12 bottom chord were insane. Needless to say I earned every cent and was in pretty good shape working there.

Yea, I slept like a baby LOL.
Yes, we had planned on doing some 2x12x20 collar ties in the back of the structure for storage - probably 20ft worth.
    The other 20ft we’ll do 2x8x10’s.
What’s your take on that? We really don’t need that much storage I don’t think. I debated only doing 10ft worth.

We are doing composite shingles to match the house (black). On the venting I’m not exactly sure yet - so thanks for the input LOL.
Yes, I picked up some nice windows that match the house (clay colored). We have 2 on each side that I think are 5ftx2ft each and then a bigger rectangular window in the back. We’re going to cut the windows out once the roof is on.
Yea, trusses are at 2ft. The structure is 30ft wide by 40ft deep on a 6”slab.

You can maybe see the back window framed out in this pic.

I could never do that for a living - I would die from exhaustion or a fall. Props to you for sure! LOL!
I ain’t cut out for this shit - but I’m too cheap to pay someone $30K when I know I can do it for $15K lol.

F an A!!! Finally getting somewhere! LMAO!!!
I’ve been trying to hit it on the days it’s not raining. o_O

(And thank God for the tractor! Lifting 24 sheets of plywood up to the roof at a time sure beats a ladder)

Started a poker table yesterday. Any slight variant to those 22.5 degree cuts really multiply by the time I set the last one in! Thinking of grouping three on each side together and retrofit the slight angle missteps on the fourth and eighth one.
Then thin foam with marine vinyl for the middle octagon.

I did both hot and cold lines recently in my crawl space for the same reason. The old ones were just about stopped up with rust. Was sore for several days after crawling around under there for several hours. Much better pressure now though. This is the stub under the kitchen sink

Man! Just got off the phone with a friend who made, what he calls a “she shed.” Whoever is in construction for a living, you should look into producing modified “she sheds” and get a step up on this seemingly treading industry.

No pics but put in a new well pump and tank for my sister. My BIL is a good guy but way overthinks easy repairs so I took a half day off and did it for them.

I had a load bearing beam that was hanging down 13” below the ceiling with a pole in the middle of the room. FBDC491B-598A-4AC3-9D6F-355C1F2BF42E.jpg 135F14BB-D236-45F2-8C7F-016E1F916D72.jpg We ripped it out and put a new lvl into the ceiling. Only hangs down 7” now!

    Flux capacitor!
I can appreciate how much work it took to remove that load bearing header. How big is your triple lvl header? Looks like it’s at least 18”. I’m sure you had to put temporary bearing walls on both sides to remove the original headers. Did you end up glueing the triple lvls before nailing them together? Good job!

Yes, alot of work removing the old and cutting the rafters perfectly to fit the new beams. We had temp walls on either side and put 3, 14” LVL’s in place and srewed them together, no glue. Attached rafters to beam and remove temp walls. Took 2 of us about 12 hours. Now sheetrock.

Rock installed on the front and roofing paper is down. Shingles deliver Friday.
Now I just have to build a road down to the shop tomorrow so that the shingle truck can deliver o_O

Road fabric is ready to roll (pun intended) and 180 tons of rock is scheduled tomorrow. :eek2:
    I’ll be busy.
