It seems that DI is being used more and more. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Many smaller engines have DI, but it seems there is a problem adapting it to larger engines.

Interesting how some people resist new technology in their vehicles. An estimated 45% of all new vehicles current being sold use direct injection. Chevy, Nissan, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, etc all use direct injection in their V8, so there is no problem adapting it to larger displacement engines. Toyota has used their D4 direct injection since 1998 and the Tundra is one of the few vehicles they sell that don't use this technology. I mention Toyota's D4 system as it uses both port and direct injection. This solves the problem of carbon build up on the intake and valves and also uses port injection during times when it is more efficient. The benefit of direct injection is that you can spray fuel into the combustion chamber several times during each combustion cycle to maximize efficiency (no blobs of gas). It also allows you to run higher compression ratios which give you more HP and Torque with the same amount of fuel. Expected MPG gains are usually 15%. Toyota has sold several million vehicles over the last 18 years with this technology and they haven't had issues recently like several other manufacturers.

Of course, I'm sure it takes some time and money to implement this technology on our trucks. Personally I like my 5.7L and wouldn't want them to reduce the displacement, but I would love for them to add their D4 system on our engines. A 5.7L that makes 420hp and 430lbs of torque with one or two MPG more would put a smile on my face. What do I know I'm not an Toyota engineer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

    This! Finally! Thank you!
DI has been around for quite awhile, multiple decades at that if you dive into racing world. Homologation at it's finest, you sir are absolutely correct!

Was it the holiday in that serves breakfast or doesn't? lol it matters....

If you really want to go reliable, you have to go back to 1986 and pick up a GM 350 LT-9, all 160 bhp @ 3800 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque @ 2800 rpm with 8.3:1 compression. Nothing more reliable than a carburetor and distributor. Who needs all of this crazy technology as it is so unreliable!

I've even given up my IPhone as a rotary phone is so much more reliable. My old rotary has not frozen once!!!! Always makes a call when I need to, although it takes about 2 minutes to dial now that they have implemented 10 digit dialing everywhere.

I'll be keeping my Tundra until Toyota comes out with a Tundra (or a similar truck) with a diesel.... and to add to my wish list would be more comfortable seats and a better JBL sound system. Everything else I can customize to my liking.

I thought the one in the Tacoma was pretty awesome, but after reading up on it, most people found it useless and ended up having to buy a aftermarket one anyways. If they did do it, I'd like to see them do it as full blown separate option like the tow package. Add a larger battery or second accessory battery like a boat has and maybe a larger alternator.

Hey Mike, hopefully everyone understood that I was being sarcastic. I have no plans to put a Chevy 350 in my Tundra as I don't believe it is nearly as reliable as my modern Toyota 5.7.

I also have no plans to give up my smart phone. I haven't used a rotary phone for over 30 years.

I just don't understand why people on this forum are so anti-progress? Is there a particular feature on Toyota products that they have been burned by? I understand concerns from other manufacturers, but all my Toyota/Lexus products have been mostly built proof. Why wouldn't someone want modern features in their Tundra unless they can show how it is going to fail?

Sorry to get off topic, back to the suggested upgrades for the Tundra.

I just scrolled to the last page so I don't know if this has been said.

Offer a pre-runner version of the tundra not just a trd or tss. Actually put some off road capabilities into it. I used to run Subaru Wrx's and Sti's built a couple rowdy ass ones to be exact. They offered a TR version "tuner ready" which was pretty stripped and bare bones just ready to race and rally. Same power plant of course but not all the bells and whistles you get in the interior and all that jazz just ready to race that's what I'd like to see

I will give a lot of you guys credit with ideas. Problem with today's vehicles are coming down to price and suppliers that can built a solid product or part(try it and you will have headaches). Then try to source a part made today can take months to r@d for tooling to production for example.

Since Toyota is Mia on HD tundra and is on back burner and on low heat.

    Dream tundra.

Make it simple, with PROVEN technology. (Damn sounds like my 1st gen)

That AIP Hi Tech design sure worked out well. Give me a truck with minimal computer control. You know, something we could actually keep running ourselves. Hate nannies, always will.

New technology is not better if not done CORRECTLY.. .. Ford Ecoboost crap still is a nightmare.. gm cylinder deactivation is a different story and a costly one down the line.. both are poor in planning and rushed by r@d and poorly executed. Some of the European cars are poorly done and expensive to maintain with some of there half baked technology in sections.

I have seen more and more piss poor designs from about all of them.

And I did not stay at a Holiday inn express last night.
