I ran across this article last night and I think the difference in sales between the big 3 and Toyota is pretty amazing.

    Ram Trucks November Sales

Although the article doesn't mention GM, I saw another report that puts their numbers really close to Ford. I'd like to know what everyone thinks about why Toyota is so far behind in the U.S. manufacturers.

Is it price? American made loyalty? Tundra too old school? Marketing?

I think most people would agree that Toyota reliability is legendary, yet the American trucks far out sell them. Why?

(I imagine this has probably been discussed here before so sorry if I brought up an old topic.)

Fleet sales play a huge part in it too. Most commercial trucks I see are Ford/GM and the "F-series" numbers for all we know could go up to the 750.

The F Series numbers are indeed all of them. Didn't even consider fleet vehicles. I'm sure that is a large chunk of their sales.

Fleet and government use has a lot to do with it. Separately some people will refuse to buy anything but from the big 3 due to loyalty and the perception they are “buying American” -even when they know the product isn’t the best out there and their vehicles are disasters. I know first hand from family members.

The big three have the manufacturing capacity to produce millions of trucks of all types. Toyota doesn't have anywhere near that. Plus Toyota basically has only two trucks. Toyota's truck manufacturing capacity is maxed out as it is. Toyota will never ever sell as many trucks as the big three even if they come out again with a game changer Tundra like they did in 07.

Fleet, "American" loyalty, and the fact that Toyota badly needs to update the Tundra. It was a toss-up on looks (subjective, obviously), but the reason I chose my Tundra was because of problem-free Toyota vehicles in the past, but I almost went with GM...

@BuckWallace so, do you regret not getting the GM now that you’re in the Tundy??

I mean I wish I had comfortable seats, remote start, better fuel mileage, Android Auto, a good sound system, and built-in wireless charging, but I'd still get a Tundra again due to reliability. However, if the current-gen Sierra was available with good incentives (we probably won't see those for a couple more years) I may have gone with one of those and taken my chances... If Toyota doesn't redesign the Tundra before GM starts putting out $13k+ in incentives then the Tundra is in real trouble.

Fleet sales are a huge part of it, I don't think Toyota has the capacity to compete in that arena. Price I don't think is to much a factor as I was able to get my Tundra cheaper then a double cab Silverado. Also another possible reason is the fact depending on where you live you might have to pay higher taxes to own a Tundra then the big 3. In my locality I am hit hard with local taxes on my Tundra since I use it for my business and the truck holds value at a ridiculous rate which they base the value off of. I'm highly considering a move back to a Silverado because of this.

Toyota doesn't sell a competitor for 3/4 and 1-ton trucks in the U.S. Toyota's medium and heavy duty truck line falls under the Hino brand.

    Not nearly enough room here!
Back in 2010, when I bought my Tundra, I couldn't find any "American Built" 1/2 ton Crewcab trucks between GM or Dodge, so I bought a truck built in Texas by Americans.

While I sort of get where you are coming from, I think that Toyota has more than enough capacity to produce that many trucks - they just don't want to. They are the top selling auto manufacturer in the world, according to 2016 numbers, and sold almost double what Ford did that year as far as total units.

Toyota's current NA capacity for Tundras is something like 130,000 and a bit more for the Tacoma. There has been past rumors about a new manufacturering plant south of the border. As far as competing with the big three in sales here in NA.....I'm just not seeing it. Would have to be a major expansion not only in capacity but Toyota would have to offer more truck models, gas and diesel, and most importantly there is the big three fan boys club issue. Ramping up from 100K plus capacity to 1 million??? Sure Toyota has the $ capital to do it. Not holding my breath waiting for that.

I agree with that - I don't think that they see enough long term benefit to doing it.

I would like to see Toyota offer gas and diesel trucks. A HD Tundra would sell easily. Would definitely be of interest to current Toyota truck fans!

I would like to see the HD option as well. I just don't think that they will - not enough of a profit in the forecast. It would be nice - more payload would be great.

Supply and demand. Toyota can certainly ramp up production if the demand was there. They are selling every truck they make, but there are not lots full of trucks left over either. That's not because they are bad trucks, as we all know, but just that the average American wants to buy an American truck (even though it is just a perceived reality).
Most Americans that I talk to agree that Toyota makes a long lasting reliable vehicle, but you won't catch them dead buying one.
Then of course as mentioned already, most government agencies have a " Buy American" policy, so fleets are almost exclusively domestic.

I work for a privately owned company. The owner drives a Lexus and a Mercedes, but all our fleet trucks are Chevy and Ford. Just because that's the way it works.

British Petroleum up in Prudhoe Bay/North Slope, AK had a huge fleet of diesel F-250s. So did Conoco Phillips. On a good note.....lots of Tundras representing in Anchorage. More Tundras than Tacos...

I'd agree with this, the vast majority of their sales numbers come from fleet sales.

Fleet sales are often made at or close to cost and don't necessarily mean they are turning much if any profit on those sales (sometimes at a loss).
What is does give them is an economy of scale that drives down cost on parts making their consumer fleet cheaper to produce, and thereby more profitable. That is at least in theory.

I owned an 04 gmc sierra 1500, it just started nickel and dimming me. I started researching the crap out of trucks and came across the tundra and how reliable they are and I fell in love. Chevy and ford is big in my area, its a small farming community in Indiana. Chrysler is also big due to the plants 30 miles away. I always felt that the Ram truck is affordable, and thats why a lot of people have them. I stand out since i have a tundra, but have so many people ask what kind of the truck that is, they cant believe its a Toyota! Everyone always wants to argue that i drive a foreign truck which is annoying. Most end up agreeing that my tundra is way more american then there ford or chevy. But I'll take the reliability over the fancy shit in the cab that all the others have. Im happy with my platinum. I built a brand new toyota and a brand new gmc with the same options and the tundra was almost $10,000 cheaper. In the end i didnt want another truck that was going to nickel and dime me. Thats why i chose a tundra.

Ok.. I fail to see why it's amazing. It's meeting its quota. Maybe I am not good at math? Did I miss something here with the % of sales?

    Toyota Tundra 9,689 -0.1% 107,042 1.6%
