Definitely a polarizing design. I like that it doesn't look like every other truck on the road.

I don’t mind the rest of it. I would want to black out the front.

I have had two new Wrangler, a '12 and a '14, 65k miles between the two of them, few few problems, they have made a lot of improvements in QC since the TJ years.
The new JT is only 10" shorter than my Crewmax, much bigger cab than a Tacoma, sort of in between the Tundra and Tacoma.
Wranglers have better resale than any Toyota except maybe the FJ Cruiser, the Tundra is pretty much unchanged since '07, it is long overdue. I am a big fan of Toyota, I have had 8 new Toyota trucks since 1984 but they need to step it up.

Not that I put much stock into these types of reports, but only Jeep Wrangler made the list, behind 3 Toyotas, for resale value. Wranglers are a cult-type thing, hence the resale value - people love them for what they are.

Think the biggest market for this is the current or wannabe jeep owner that is looking for higher towing capacity. The current Wrangler has a crappy towing capacity and this changes that.

Only one specific trim has 1600 lbs of payload; load it up with armor, lockers, and all of the extra weight that the higher trims (Rubicon and "Overland") will inevitably have and it goes down to probably 1100-1000 lbs.

I haven’t tried it much since I don’t drive that one anymore. Didn’t even know to do that until after I had my new one. Also, I have no idea because I know jack squat about shift points and throttle response.

It does seem to have more pick up, but it’s pretty jerky. It’s not as smooth as doing it on a gen 3. (This is when doing tow/haul, and disabling traction control.) My few times I tried it, it felt like it might give me whiplash. Someone else here can probably answer better than I.

The only reason we argue over what color is fastest is because they discontinued that one.

Well....Toyota USA CEO came out today and stated that car sales tanked 30%....Will focus more on "truck" sales.........cheap gas that will remain cheap for quite some time. Lots of fracking going on State and privately owned land. Even more now on Fed owned land. Even if the political winds change.."they" can't stop fracking and new oil well exploration on non Fed lands.......

I was seriously thinking about buying a new Tundra but then realized that the 2019 are the same damn truck just some tweaks. So now looking at other brands and not sure what I am gonna do. Might wait for the new 7.0 Raptor but the Jeep truck is a possibility - I like to be able to take the top and doors off when I go off-roading and the diesel option.
I would do a 4Runner TRD Pro in a heartbeat if it had a V8 option.

My '07 has more electronics than I care for, and I can't imagine that I would like driving a newer vehicle with so many dash distractions. As for the tranny; I can drive a stick and they are fine, but I prefer an automatic.

Consumer Reports is an interesting data point, but the more of their content that I read, the less confidence I have in their "ranking" abilities.

The Ram 2500 is the 2nd most reliable truck, but the Ram 3500 is down at the bottom of the rankings? How does that work? They're both basically the same truck minus a few changes to the rear suspension. I also don't agree with how they group traditional BOF SUV's (4runner) with the soft-roading CUV's (Mazda CX-9, Ford Flex, Nissan Pathfinder)....those are very different vehicles being compared there, and they likely get used in very different fashions. How is it fair to compare the reliability of a 4runner that gets used offroad to a Ford Flex which likely only gets used for commuting and the occasional road trip?

As for Jeep posing a threat to the Tundra and Toyota's other 4x4's....not really. Jeep has a huge market share because of its brand and heritage. The problem with the Jeep Wrangler, and other Jeep and Ram vehicles, is that they're still made by FCA....the longterm build quality is lacking. Even die-hard Jeep enthusiasts readily admit this:

Interesting side note: the host of that youtube channel daily drives a Toyota Tundra. That says volumes about which brand he trusts the most. The Jeep Wrangler, including the new gladiator, is a great weekend toy. Toyota is still leaps and bounds above the competition when it comes to making long-lasting and durable trucks....perhaps with the possible exception of some of the domestic 3/4 tons (but even those have issues from time to time).

My problem with CR or JD Power is they sample cars for the first 50,000 or less. I voted with my wallet. My wife has had a few Camrys with little work over the years and I have had Tacoma's do well also. We sold my 03 Lightning a few months back for a 2018 4 Runner, already had a 2013 Tundra Crewmax, and when my wife's 2014 Camry ended up totalled we traded the last Ford off on a new 18 Camry. I want vehicles to last longer than it takes to pay for them. I'm sick of recalls dragged out over years. Ford had just did the airbag recall on my 2011 ranger when they announced the seatbelt recall covering trucks that just been sold.

I just provided a glaring example of why its not a reasonable method: The Ram 2500 was ranked near the top of the list, while the 3500 was down at the bottom. How is that possible? They're pretty much the same vehicle with some minor suspension differences.

Also how many Ram HD owners submit surveys to CR? I have a strong suspicion that the pickup and 4x4 segments are somewhat under-represented in the CR community.

For example, if only several hundred Ram owners submitted surveys, out of the hundreds of thousands that are on the road, is that really a good sampling of the brand's reliability?

Moreover, most car owners don't take the time and money to subscribe to outlets like CR. If someone has a bad experience with a truck, or any vehicle for that matter, they're inclined to complain about it. But the people who have no problems normally just keep to themselves and go about their lives....what exactly has CR done to ensure that they're getting a wide swath of owner feedback, rather than just the negative responses from disgruntled owners?

CR rankings are a data point to consider...but they should be taken with a grain of salt.

Well judging from you sarcasm, I guess you don't have any problem with CR ranking two nearly identical trucks very differently on the reliability spectrum?

The Tundra has consistently been ranked high on a variety of different reliability rankings...so I'm not sure why you think it hasn't gotten any "love" in that regard.

Some owners submitted negative surveys on the Ram 3500. Some owners submitted surveys about the Ram 2500 which were evidently much more positive. They're both the same truck, with the same engine options, same frame, same chassis (minus the rear suspension) and mostly the same issues.....having one at the top of the list and one at the bottom doesn't make sense and is perhaps indicative of a flaw with CR's surveying methods.

That's my point....take it or leave it.

Gotta admit, Jeep is doing everything I've done to my Tundra and then some and they're doing right out of the gate. I dig the look, especially that Mopar version - wow! Not gonna lie, after they work the kinks out of that thing in a couple of years, I may become a Jeep owner.
