So here is something else to think about too. I pieced this together here just now. It is about $300 more (before rebates) but you know everything that is going into the cost of the machine. The processor is better (even though this is an i3 and the other is an i5) the graphics card is WAY better, case is nicer (in my opinion) better MB, RAM, PSU, CPU cooler, etc) Call a PC repair shop and ask them what they would charge to put together a machine if you got all the pieces for them, I bet they'd do you a solid deal. (hell, they might even have some of the parts in stock)

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WmxzsZ

The parts I have picked out below would make for a killer budget gaming machine. I went with a 8350k so he can do easy Overclocking (the i3s are quad cores now). I probably wouldnt do much with the air cooler I went with but if he upgraded to an AIO later on down the line he'd be set for 5.0hz

I went a little over kill on the PSU (power supply) but honestly, that is one of the places you DO NOT want to go cheap and where most SIs DO go cheap. This one component has the capability to kill everything else in your case.

No optical drive (there really is no need.)

This would be a kickass system for in the middle of your budget that is far and beyond what I shared with you.

    Compatibility Check: No issues/incompatibilities found.

The best part about the above is knowing that if he does need more CPU hp later on down the line, all you need to do is buy an 8000 (or 9000 series cpu with small mb bios update) and he's set.

Wow! I'm gonna hope you answer up any time I need to know something I don't. :D

I still don't feel comfortable assembling it myself, but I'll take this tomorrow to the 2 places I know and see if it can be done in time for delivery before Christmas.

    Thanks!!

I won't. He's not a geek... yet. But I see it going that way. Right now, I'm just tired of him complaining that we won't let him load up a bunch of games on our household PC's and, anyway, they're "lag-y".

@Sunnier , this guy is giving you solid advice. Have an Alienware that lasted a little over a year for my son, complete junk. When I opened it up to fix it, just nope, not worth it. It would of been so much cheaper just buying something like @HUTCHJ is suggesting that can be upgraded. Neither my son, or myself assembled a computer before, did it together, was easy and fun. His friends that have box store systems regret it, huge difference. Snuck into his lair and took a pic..

Thanks man! I appreciate the kind words. I just love tinkering with them. Putting them together yourself can really make a big difference. I definitely don't judge anyone that doesn't want to or doesn't feel comfortable doing it but if you know someone that can, definitely worth it.

Edit: did not mean that in an offensive way. I had a gaming PC in a room that I called my lair. Newborn son took that from me...:(

look here. they do everything for you. i'm running what used to be called the end-all, now it's their 144fps build (but a little better). I'm using AMD parts instead of Intel because they're shady AF, 2700x FTW.

I’m also using AMD. They stepped up their game with the Ryzen line of CPU’s.

yeah they did. it's an amazing multitasking processor. but I built this rig for gaming mostly and it handles 120 frames at 1080p in PUBG on ultra settings. have it paired with a sapphire RX580 Nitro.

Despite your giving me a component list for building one, I decided my kid won't notice the difference yet between good and really good, so I ordered the already built set-up. However, it's on backorder with no updates on when it may be available so I'm kind of starting to worry again.

As we in the business say "Oh Hell it's Dell". I use to hold Dell Certifications, they are a joke. Throw rocks at them.

    Build your own.

I started out as a VAR, Reseller. I build over 700 systems in the 10 years I was in business. Got out of the business when they started selling disposal PCs for what I was making on them.

You use to be able to read Tom's Hardware site to get good insight on what to get to build a rocking system, not sure that's true anymore, I do Cisco networking now, maybe someone has input on this.

When someone ask me what computer to buy I ask how much they want to spend first. Looks like you're getting some good advice so far.

For sure, I3 8350k was perfect for her budget. Allows them to spend more on the GPU which is where the power counts more on the budget she has.
