so it seems in searching there are other issues that may prevent the transmission from going into 5 and 6th gear, but i appear to be experiencing something slightly different. I have no flashing lights, VSC, etc

for a year now, i haven't been able to get my Sequoia to shift into 4lo. it just would rapidly flash and nothing happened. yesterday i tried it randomly and i heard the actuator engage and it went in, i was pretty excited.

today i tried again and it worked, so i went driving in 4lo and in both automatic mode and sport mode, it seems to be "stuck" in 4th gear and won't shift higher.

i have no issues in 4hi or 2hi. thoughts?

Mine does the same thing. I’m pretty sure fifth and six gear are both overdrives. I want to say the transmission may not be strong enough for that much torque to the wheels. There’s no reason you should be going that fast in 4 low anyways in my opinion. It’s probably really hard on stuff.

like 15-20 mph at that point, maybe 2500-3k RPM's.

i get it, most real life 4 lo work would be a crawl anyway, but our 2007 4runner didn't do this. just curious.

thanks for the speedy responses gents

You absolutely shouldn’t be going fast enough for the truck to shift into 4th gear in 4low

Tops 30 mph in 4 low in my opinion. I’m curious what Toyota says.

My owners manual for a 2016 Sequoia limited says that the transmission will not shift into 5 & 6 when in 4 wheel Low. 4th gear is a
1 to 1 ratio, 5th and 6th are overdrives. This way, with a 1 to 1 ratio, there's no extra strain (load) trying to run in the overdrive ratios.
Considering the transfer case ,in Low Range, multiplies the gear ratios by a factor of 2.625. A little more than 2 and a half times per revolutions. Hope this helps explains things.
