What else during frame replacement?

    Hi Guys,
New here and not easily seeing what I want to know doing a general search. Please point me in the right direction. I'm sure these questions have been asked a few times before.

Just purchased (12 days ago) a 2007 SR5 DC 4x4, 5.7L 241k miles. Paid $7000 due to mileage (I needed a cheap 4x4 hunting truck). The retired guy that owned it had never heard of the frame issues and it had never been inspected. Last week I had it inspected (warranty expires January 2019) and it is getting the warranty frame replacement. Claim has been submitted but I do not know the scope of work yet. The service tech said replace the cat back exhaust and front struts at the same time and I'll be good to 400k.

I would like to know what is generally covered and what things I should pay to have done in addition to the warranty work. Things that fail and are hard to access that will be easy to do while it's apart. I.e. 4.6L Air pumps fail at 100k on GX460's

I come up with a very short list; spark plugs, struts/shocks, swaybar bushings, ?balljoints?

Also, I'd like to know which stock wheels are the stronger forged wheels. Plan on running summer and winter wheels with KO2 tires and would like a cheaper set of upgraded wheels for this budget build.

BTW it gets 15 city/ 18.7 highway on LT street tires. Which I thought was respectable.

Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

    None......YET!
Hi Chards77 - similar situation here - want to keep up with your progress.....I just took delivery of a 2007 Crewmax Limited with 163K miles and I intend to build this out for hunting. I have it in with the local Toyota dealer inspecting it today to make sure I made a good buy - I was stupid for not getting it pre-inspected since it was out of state, but I felt confident based on the photos provided to me it was a solid truck. I'm hoping there are no frame issues, but will learn of my fate today. :) Good luck and I cant wait to see photos.

    Welcome @mikey13170,

The frame inspection was a warranty specific inspection. Takes about an hour. I had the good fortune to see one disassembled that a dealer was selling as they listed it early. The tech showed me the trouble spots, rear leaf mounts and the rear cross braces near spare tire. My truck had recent Toyota service records, so I was quite surprised to learn it had never been inspected for the frame. My dealer said I had 12 years from build date to have it inspected. They just run the vin to verify coverage. The body is rust free except for around the bed mounting bolts, so I took a calculated risk buying it w/o an inspection knowing it was still covered. Stay tuned.

Can you also inquire about how much it'd cost for Toyota to buy back the truck? One of my regulars at my shop had his Tacoma bought back and they paid him 1.5x KBB value. Who knows, you could make a quick buck lol

Also had a guy come into the shop today, he got a free frame replacement, but now a bunch of crap doesn't work, and the dealer is not taking any responsibility. His english isn't very good so he doesn't know how to complain. He just sucked it up and took it to me to have it fixed.

I can ask but I don't think they do that anymore. My neighbor had that occur to an early 00's tacoma but it was because the truck was "not safe to drive".

I just got the truck gimme a minute Ok who’s got something for sale?
So I just bought an 08 with 212k miles... can I seriously take it to the dealer and possibly get the frame replaced?

It’s hard to tell from other responses, but is it worth it? The truck does have some rust from being up north for most it’s life, and I’m in Georgia so not much worry for rust compared to New Hampshire

Depends on how bad your current frame is, do you have any pics, they might just spray it down with crap if it's not structurally damaged. That spray sucks, it just hides everything and makes it worse.

Short answer, YES. My dealer told me 12 yrs from manufacture date. A phone call with the vin will tell you if it's covered and previously been inspected. The areas I've seen 1st hand are on the cross braces under the bed and in front of the spare tire.

Note: my door says build was 03/07. I was told I had until 01/19 to be inspected. Inspection was 11/27/18. Dealer expects parts to arrive 02/19. The coverage for trucks that have spent any time in rust prone areas.

It's funny. I purposely went to South Carolina to buy a Tundra that had never been any further north. I spent weeks looking and having dealers send me pictures of frames as well as reviewing CarFax reports to see where they were registered. I took an economy flight to Charlotte and had a friend drive me the rest of the way. When looking I couldn't believe how many trucks were for sale down there that came from up here.

KarnoldX85 your truck doesn't look too bad. On my 2000 that center cover on the rear axle actually rusted to the point where it was leaking. It's thinner metal than the rest of the axle. I had to cut it off and make up something new (which is one of the reasons why I wanted a southern truck). On my 07 you can still see numbers on the frame from when it left the factory. It probably cost me an extra $1000 to get a rust free truck.

They won't replace that, they'll just spray over it with some crap that'll make it worse. If you want to keep the truck, wirebrush off what you can and coat it with POR15, that'll stop the rust better than Toyota's crappy spray.

My buddy had his first gens frame replaced last year. He is kicking himself now for not having the headers replaced.

Closer to the cab. #51206B in front of the spare tire X-brace. Possibly #51206 also. Here's a breakdown from the Toyota parts site... Screenshot_20181216-224450.jpg

Near the frame rails the can "perforate".

Oh I'm thinking. Full exhaust including converter pipes, water pump, spark plugs and struts/shocks...looking for recommendations to go another +100k without issues. Trying to get 400k out of it.

The axle housing is made of pretty thick metal (especially when compared to the frame) and some time with a wire wheel, angle grinder, and some fresh paint can make it look like new again. I would apply the oil film after removing the rust and putting some new paint on it.

Rubber hoses and belts would be really easy to access along with the body mounts. Leaf springs also don't last forever and it might be worth swapping out; perhaps someone that recently installed aftermarket leaf packs would sell you their gently used factory springs for much cheaper than new ones?

I'm waiting on the official list of parts to be replaced. It should include body mounts and rear leafs as well as some brake lines...
