Do I really need to get 10 ply tires?

    I’ve been looking at replacing my factory H/T tires. I do not see many load range “D” tires for 18” wheels. My primary use of the truck is running down farm roads while I check crops and Do some desert desert driving while hunting quail in the fall. Will load “C” do or should I just get the 10 ply? Don’t plan on hauling much with the truck, having a hard time seeing the need for the 10 ply.

    Load Range C exceeds your load and towing capacity. Should be good to go. The C will be better off-road as well.

    This is one of the only complains I have with the Tundra tire sizing. Very difficult getting anything else but a P Metric or LR E tire.

    If you ever wanted to change wheel/tire sizing, great time to do it. A 265/70/18 is a very common tire size, or go with a 17” wheel. That opens up the doors a bit for sizing.

    I just bought some 285/75/16 BFG KO2s, they only offer them in E and man they ride are lot stiffer than my previous tires. If they still offered a C, I would have gotten that instead.

    You Will hate E, they ride stiff even on these trucks even at 35psi. If you dont need the rating, IMO dont do it!

    Edit - i was running E in 285/75/17 Cooper AT3

    @14burrito It would be tough to go back now but who makes a good AT similar to the BFG w/o the E rating?

    Keep in mind not all 10-ply/E rated tires ride the same.

    The Toyo OC AT2s I have in 285/75R17 are vastly stiffer and uncomfortable compared to my Yokohama GO15s in 285/75R17 which are a pleasure.

    Both same size. Both 10-ply.

    The GO15s are so nice I bought a 2nd set in 285/75R18.

    I gotta say though, IMO (while they are labeled ATs), those are two very different tires.

    This is my problem and why I don’t want to jump to a bigger tire. I don’t need E rated tires. But I feel that my P rated tires are probably more subject to puncture’s while offroading. I haven’t had it happen but I do like the way they ride. I think a C rated tire would be right up my alley. But I can’t find any. So instead I look for how heavy every tire I search for, will be. So far the Nitto Terra grappler‘s seem to be the lightest E rated 10ply tire that I can find. 52 pounds in 275/70/18
