    hey, anyone changed a Steering rack on a 2011 Tundra 4WD 5.7L?

    I took my truck to the dealership and they are asking 4,500$ to change steering rack and pump, that is just too much!!
    I was looking videos but it's none on a 4WD, the technician told me that they have to take the front transfer out to take the steering rack out! It's true?
    How hard is to do it?
    It's something I can do in my garage?
    It's Any videos available?
    Important " it's 4WD"

    @csuviper

    The 2011-2012 seem to be the prime years for those repairs. It doesn't seem to like turns at full lock from what I understand.

    Had mine done by @LOTSOFTOYS at Toyota. Spent a lot but turned out great. Lot of work to get the rack out. Yes the front diff has to be fully removed.

    I just had my rack bushings replaced. Dealer wanted to replace the rack as the bushings are built inside and quoted $2,700 to pull the motor. Another shop said they had to lift the transmission to get to the rack out of a previous Tundra and wanted $900+. A different shop say they had to drop the whole front suspension and wouldn't touch it. The shop that replaced the bushings thought they could have enough wiggle room from removing the inner tie rods, but there isn't. I guess whichever is easier to do. I've read that the racks from the 07-08 Tundra and 13 Tundra has a better rack assembly.

    I would ask Jace if he wants to spend a weekend in Vegas. Fly him in, put him up in a nice hotel and pay him for his time. @LOTSOFTOYS

    Yup, $400 airfare, $400 hotel, $1000 labor, $200 adult play money. $2000 is better than $4500 for a certified Toyota mechanic to fix.

    If you decide to DIY, let me know, I know there are several steps in there that are abbreviated that you will need, alot of trim and I think the instrument panel needs to come out.

    I'd need a shop and my tools tho....

    This is true^lol

    Like @csuviper said, it is a Shitty job. the book says to remove the engine. flat rate techs know that's b.s. you do have to remove the front diff. lower the tcase and trans to gain room under the engine. sucks but I can do it in about 8 hours or so. that's cruising pretty good imo

    So I disagree. I changed the rack on my ‘11 4X4 crew cab in 2017. I cheated and did it at a makerspace with a lift.

    I didn’t remove the transfer case or diff. I followed a write up. Pushed up on the engine a bit with a board and jack under the oil pan. With the inner tie rods removed there was barely enough room, but I got it. It did suck.
